Fracking Hell: The Untold Story
Watch more Earth Focus at www.linktv.org An original investigative report by Earth Focus and UK's Ecologist Film Unit looks at the risks of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale. From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains? Marcellus Shale contains enough natural gas to supply all US gas needs for 14 years. But as gas drilling takes place, using a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," toxic chemicals and methane gas seep into drinking water. Now experts fear that unacceptable levels of radioactive Radium 226 in gas development waste. Fracking chemicals are linked to bone, liver and breast cancers, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, developmental as well as brain and nervous system disorders. Such chemicals are present in frack waste and may find their way into drinking water and air. Waste from Pennsylvania gas wells -- waste that may also contain unacceptable levels of radium -- is routinely dumped across state lines into landfills in New York, Ohio and West Virginia. New York does not require testing waste for radioactivity prior to dumping or treatment. So drill cuttings from Pennsylvania have been dumped in New York's Chemung and other counties and liquid waste is shipped to treatment plants in Auburn and Watertown New York ...

In Bhopal, India, tens of thousands were killed 25 years ago when toxic gas escaped from a factory run by the US company Union Carbide. The compensation was meager, the plant is still oozing toxic waste, and the first trials, which took place this year, found executives guilty and handed out 2-year sentences. Blige on pulled Burger King ad: It wasn't finished R&B superstar Mary J. Blige says a recently pulled Burger King advertisement that featured her was "unfinished" and didn't follow the parameters to which she'd agreed. The clip, which Burger King released on YouTube before taking it down this week amid a public backlash, is part of a series of celebrity ads showcasing the fast-food chain's new menu options. In Blige's spot, the nine-time Grammy winner promotes the new Crispy Chicken Snack Wraps. Wearing a short wig, leather jacket and shades, she rocks to the beat of her own song, "Don't Mind," off her latest album, "My Life II... The Journey Continues." She sings altered lyrics, about "crispy chicken, fresh lettuce, three cheeses, ranch dressing, wrapped up in a tasty flour tortilla." People complained about the ad on social media sites, with some saying that her peddling of chicken played into racial stereotypes. In a statement to CNN on Wednesday, Blige said the ad wasn't what she thought it was going to be, but she did not address the issue of stereotypes. "I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence," Blige said. "Unfortunately, that's not what was happening in that clip, so I understand my fans being upset by what they saw ...

Robert Fisk - The Age of the Warrior by LinkTV
For more than three decades, Robert Fisk has traveled throughout the Middle East as a correspondent, covering 11 major wars in the region, and winning the British International Journalist of the Year award an impressive seven times. As a long-time resident of Beirut, Fisk is fluent in Arabic and has most recently covered the US occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Israel's conflicts with Lebanon and the Palestinians. He is also the author of the new book, The Age of the Warrior. Robert Fisk has said that the primary role of journalists is to challenge authority -- especially those who would take us to war. This address, recorded in Berkeley, California in November 2008, certainly raises a challenge to that authority, as Fisk explains how the West's attitudes toward the Arab world have culminated in the current foreign policy fiascoes we face in the region.
