The BBC ran a story about two individuals who chose to have their hand amputated and replaced with a bionic one after they lost almost all function in their hand after accidents: www.bbc.co.uk . They invited me to their studio to talk about the capabilities of currently available bionic hands and about the ethical issues involved. Jeremy and the entire crew were awesome, it was big fun.

Thomas was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1965.He began his career as a reggae artist at the age of 14 with the Gemini sound system, before moving on to work with Tony Rebel's Rebel Tone and Papa Roots,and later working with Stereo Mars, Arrows and Metro Media.He joined Killamanjaro where he worked alongside Early B, Super Cat, Puddy Roots, and Little Twitch, and then Sturmars where he worked with Josey Wales, Nicodemus, Super Cat, U Brown, and Yami Bolo. His first job on leaving school was as a butcher. During the 80s, Ranks moved on to the Arrows sound system and his debut single "Gunman Lyrics" was recorded for Winston Riley's Techniques label. He also recorded such tracks as "Out Of Hand" and "Fishman Lyrics" with Riley and after spending some time in Miami working with Super Cat and Nicodemus, he worked with Patrick Roberts' Shocking Vibes label, releasing the single "The Bomber".In 1990 he joined Donovan Germain's Penthouse label, enjoying a hit with "Pon Mi Nozzle". Ranks came to the attention of London-based Fashion Records and in 1991, he released "The Stopper" and a debut album of the same name for Fashion, following this up with the album Lethal Weapon in the same year for Penthouse, featuring singers such as Marcia Griffiths, Dennis Brown, Wayne Wonder, and Beres Hammond. Treating 'phantom limb pain' with mirror therapy
When Spc. Bryan Wagner is driving, he pushes the gas pedal with his right foot in spite of the fact that he doesn't have a right foot. "I drive with it," the 23-year-old said, referring to the prosthetic limb that replaced the real one he lost in Baghdad on Dec. 17, 2007, when the Humvee he was a gunner on ran over an improvised explosive device. But Wagner, an Exeter, Calif. native with a military buzz and the burly build of an offensive lineman, says vehicular matters aren't high on his to-do list. Neither is running a marathon, which he has somehow done, and snowboarding, which he still enjoys. What dogs him is the "phantom pain" he feels in the limb he lost, a common complaint among amputees dating back to previous wars and even showing up in literature. In David Guterson's novel "Snow Falling on Cedars", about the Japanese-American experience during and after World War II, the protagonist Ishmael Chambers complains of pain from his missing left arm. As of July 1, a total of 904 service members have undergone amputations resulting from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Therapy helps limbs "see" But a new technique called "mirror image therapy" is using the reflection of the intact limb to trick Wagner's brain-in a good way. A transition episode for Chip and Dale, since graphically they have their mature forms, but still retain the generic, unintelligible voices of the early episodes. This is definitely one of my favorites, along with Working for Peanuts and All in a Nutshell. Chip and Dale are drawn with unmatched perfection. Tons of gratuitous, fun details like Donald testing his clippers at 2:23 and looking very happy with them. The story is also typical and well-executed, with successive encounters between Donald and the chipmunks gradually escalating in tension. But above anyting else, I can't get enough of Chip and Dale trying to unglue each other; that is a timeless scene.

Out On A Limb - Part 1 - 1986 - Shirley MacLaine
Part 1 of 24. Out on a Limb was an autobiographical book written by Shirley MacLaine in 1983 and adapted for television in 1986. The ABC Television miniseries starred Shirley MacLaine (playing herself), John Heard as "David Manning", and Charles Dance as "Gerry Stamford ". It details MacLaine's journeys through new-age spirituality. We follow McLaine from California to various locations including New York and Europe, culminating in a life-changing trip to the Andes mountains in Peru. Central characters include "David" who is, according to MacLaine herself, a composite character, "Gerry Stamford", a married man and member of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, with whom McLaine was having an affair, and real-life close friend and politician, Bella Abzug (played by Anne Jackson). Taken from both VHS and Betamax sources recorded during the orignal broadcasts and divided into 24 parts for YouTube. You will also find the original ABC Monday Night Movie promotional spot that aired just before the broadcast of the conclusion of the miniseries.
iLimb Pulse hand prosthesis: Switching between grip patterns
This is the new iLimb Pulse prosthetic hand. I've been using it for about four months. You can tell the hand to switch to up to four out of eight available grip modes or grip patterns with an included software. The software connects to the hand via bluetooth. I use a co-contraction for changing from the default grip mode to wrist rotation. That means that I send a simultaneous muscle signal to both electrodes. That is very useful for a lot of things, for example pouring drinks. I activate my second grip mode by sendeing two quick impulses to the opening electrode. My second grip mode is called precision pinch. It moves the Index finger in opposition to the thumb. It is very useful for picking up small objects. My next grip mode is called index point. I activate it by sendeing three quick impulses to the opening electrode: One, two, three. It is very useful for typing. My fourth grip mode is called thumb park. I activate with a open signal that lasts more than two seconds. The hand then parks the four fingers and only moves the thumb. That is very useful for donning and doffing clothing. In summary, I can tell the i-Limb to do five differnt things: Move all fingers, rotate the wrist, go to pinch mode for picking up small objects, point out the index finger for typing, and park all fingers but the thumb. Each mode is associated with its own control signal, so there is no "cycling through" modes. Any mode can be activated from any other mode. It is the most advanced ...

The Touch Bionics i-Limb Hand. REMARKABLE!
Some joke around and call it the terminator hand. This is an incredible new piece of technology! One can only imagine, the possibilities. After seeing the end of the vid, how they compare intelligence with dexterity - it makes you wonder, with our current technology and people always at the computer, moving their fingers at hyper-speed hitting individual targets/keys... where we are headed. This is fantastic! For some good quick reading on the i-hand check out the following link: news.bbc.co.uk The world's first commercially available bionic hand has been recognised as one of the top inventions of 2008. The hands are fitted with a realistic silicone outer skin, which also helps for adding extra grip. I did some research on it because what got me curious was how can it sense anything... be touch sensitive. Then I found out it doesn't have any senses, but hopefully one day we will get to that point so that the prosthetic device is even more useful. I have had many ideas myself for how to enable this on a prosthetic device - the only problem is getting the money and funding to test out the ideas. Hope you like the vid.
