Isaac Levitan - Russian Landscape Painter
Issac Levitan - (1860-1900) "The work of Isaac Ilyich Levitan belongs to the highest achievements of Russian culture. Its significance is compared with the works of such classics as Anton Chekhov, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Konstantin Stanislavsky. Levitan was born in 1860 into a poor but educated Jewish family. In the late 1860s, the family moved to Moscow, where Isaac studied at the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture from 1873 till 1883. He lost his mother in 1875 and his father two years later. He was left penniless and homeless in Moscow, sleeping alternately in the homes of relatives and friends, sometimes spending the night in the empty classrooms of the school. A nightwatch took pity on the youth and let him sleep in his cubicle. The School waived his tuition fee because of extreme poverty and in recognition of his singular success in art. The greatest role in the forming of Levitans creative personality belongs to his favorite teacher Alexey Savrasov, the most lyrical among Russian landscape painters of the 1860s-1870s, who influenced many well-known artists of Levitans generation Mikhail Nesterov, Constantin Korovin and others. Of course, Levitans passionate love for poetry and music, his persistent studying of pleine-air, the sunny paintings of Vasiliy Polenov, who also taught at the School, the works of the French painters of the Barbizon school, of Camille Corot were of great importance for the young artist. Levitan was born August 30, 1860 in the village of Kibarti (Governorate of Kaunas, Lithuania) from a poor family, but cultured. His father, the son of a rabbi, he attended Hebrew school and was then further trained as a self-taught. In Kaunas was a teacher of French and German, then moved to work as a translator at the yard of the railway bridge, contracted to a French firm. In the early 70's, his family moved to Moscow where, in 1873, Isaak was admitted to the Institute's technical painting, sculpture and architecture, already attended (from 1871) from his older brother Avel 'and where he had among his teachers Vasily Perov, Alexei Savrasov and Vasily Polenov. In 1875 his mother died and his father became seriously ill. These, forced by illness to leave work at the railways, he found himself unable to maintain, with private tuition, his four children. The conditions were such that the family of the Institute from time to time the two brothers lavished subsidies and, in 1876, exempts them from payment of the line "in view of extreme poverty" and their "in the artistic merits." In 1877 Levitan's father died of typhus. For him, his brother and sisters there came a period of extreme difficulty. At that time the artist attended the class Perov. A friend of these, Savrasov, he noticed his skills and took him in his class, "landscapes". That same ...
