Create your own DIY guide at www.howcast.com or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at www.howcast.com Make everyone in your neighborhood green with envy over your lush lawn with these landscaping secrets. To complete this How-To you will need: A soil test Fertilizer Water Sharp lawn mower blades Step 1: Test your soil Test your soil to find out what nutrients it needs. Garden centers often sell do-it-yourself kits, or you can arrange a test through the Cooperative Extension System, a national agriculture network. Find a nearby Extension office on the USDA web site. Step 2: Fertilize carefully Don't put too much fertilizer out at one time; one pound of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet is a good rule of thumb, but follow the directions on your package. After fertilizing, lightly water your lawn to wash any excess off the blades and to help the fertilizer reach the roots. Step 3: Give your grass enough water Give your lawn about one inch of water per week. If it's really hot out, give it an inch of water every three to five days. A can set outside will tell you how much rainwater your lawn has gotten; time how long it takes for the can to fill up one inch. Tip: Many Extension web sites have guidelines on the optimum water ...

DIY Robot Lawn Mower

Home-made robot lawn mower. Barbie Jeep + control system + blades & motors. Uses buried wire (electronic dog fence), bumpers, and flaps for navigation. Biased random steering. Transcript: So here's the world famous pink and green lawn mower. Pink for these wheels -- this thing started out life as a Barbie Jeep -- and green for this battery -- doesn't use any gas. It's, uh, got little bumpers...I'll show you how those things work. It's got little flaps...coated with aluminum so that when they touch, the mower knows it's hit something. It's got a little control system -- a *really* little control system: couple of NAND gates, couple of timers, some relays, stuff like that. And that's the basic mower that just responds to the bumpers and the flaps. But it's also got -- I don't know if you can see it -- some coils down here that listen to my electronic dog fence, and a circuit I got off the internet that reads those guys, and treats them just like the bumpers or the flaps, so whenever it hits something it goes in the other direction, until it hits something and then it goes in the other direction. So... Let me turn it over, and take a look at the cutters. There's three motors with little plastic wheels [disks] on them, little razor blades attached to the wheels [disks], and that's it for the cutting. There you can see the...what I salvaged from the Barbie Jeep, the motors and the wheels and the chassis. It's got an independent suspension, so it doesn't get hung up too much ...

How To Aerate and Seed Lawn Charlotte

www.homeinspectioncarolina.com In this video Preston Sandlin of Home Inspection Carolina in Charlotte NC will tell you how to aerate and seed your lawn. *Every season, lawn will be challenged by, varying temperatures, drought conditions or crazy insects. You should realize that even the best turf will stress and thin and this is why you need to aerate and seed annually. *Over seeding fills open areas and aeration protects and grows the roots. Complete these in early September, aeration first then seeding. First thing, mow shorter this one time. This shortens the grass that may inhibit seed, fertilizer or compost from contacting soil. You may slowly drop blades 2 weeks prior to help eliminate excess clippings gradually. What is aeration? Aeration is poking holes in the soil of your lawn. A heavy machine, with spikes, pokes the ground removing 2"-3" deep cylinders of soil, placing them on the surface. Why is aeration good for the lawn? For a variety of reasons, it's relieves compaction, more water and fertilizer can enter the soil, more oxygen, compost can enter, and better root health. Should soil be dry or wet? Aerators alleviate compaction by removing soil, leaving an open hole which will collapse over time. The deeper the tines penetrate, the greater the effect on compaction. Aerating when the soil is wet, allows for greater penetration and more comprehensive results. Aerate right after a slow full day soaking rain or after the lawn is deeply watered. If you choose to ...

Create your own DIY guide at www.howcast.com or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at www.howcast.com The quickest way to get a gorgeous lawn is to lay sod, uniform patches of grass-covered soil held together by matted roots. To complete this How-To you will need: A soil test A garden hoe A starter fertilizer A lawn spreader Sod A lawn roller A power tiller Topsoil A knife or hand cutter A can A string and stakes Step 1: Prep the land Till your soil with a garden hoe and remove sticks and stones. Consider a power garden tiller if you have a lot of land. Then, apply starter fertilizer with a lawn spreader. Step 2: Test the soil Test your soil to find out what nutrients it needs. Garden centers sell do-it-yourself kits, or you can arrange a test through your local Extension Service. Step 3: Start on the straight and narrow Put down the first row of sod along a straight line, like the edge of a driveway. If your yard is uneven all around, create a straight line by tying a string between two stakes. Tip: Use a sharp knife or hand cutter to trim sections to fit uneven areas. Step 4: Stagger the strips Stagger the rows of sod the way bricklayers arrange bricks. As you put down ...

Your Yard Is EVIL

In which John discusses the absolute insanity of front yards. Turf grass is the biggest irrigated crop in the US; we irrigate grass almost exclusively with drinkable water; also, you will be surprised to learn that grass is INEDIBLE. Plus, I dislike mowing the lawn when it is 115 outside. Lots of people (particularly people who work in the lawn business) will note that turf grass is a carbon sink (particularly if you mow the lawn frequently). This is true, but there are far more efficient carbon sinks that don't require so much water. How to Fertilize your Lawn / Grass

This is how I fertilize my yard. Houston, Texas. It was 101 outside when I did this. Make sure to put LOTS of water. Mow 2 xa week if possiable on the HIGHEST setting that your lawn mower has. If you have a lawn service, if I may suggest, own your own lawn mower that your service can use to prevent damage or them not raising the setting on the mower, simply give them your code to your garage.( this will prevent 90% of issues) I Mow using a rear bag mower on the highest setting that the mower can go Plus one more. The yard is 12- 14 inchs tall in most places, and has been pictured on most major Fertilizer websites. Take my advice. WATER, WATER, and WATER, Mow twice a week on high (durring the summer), if possiable and use fertilizer once every other month. Look for 2-5% Iron content and 26 - 35% Nitro content. I like to water for a long time, at night, for deep root water (summer for over 30 minutes) ... NEVER WATER DURRING THE DAY. (I promise you will have the best lawn in your area. TAKE MY ADVICE if you have Saint Augustine grass) For new grass, ie, just planted, like you just purchased a home. MAKE sure to wait 30 - 45 day before adding fertilizer. New lawns simply water twice a day, then in 30 - 45 days use my suggestions. Again... GET THE BEST yard and YARD OF THE MONTH.. THIS WORKS...
