Antarctica Time lapse: A Year on Ice
Go to www.antarcticimages.com for a better quality version of this clip. Blog www.frozensouth.com Time-lapse video filmed in Antarctica, in and around McMurdo Station and Scott Base. Each year the sun is below the horizon for 4 months in the middle of winter, and above the horizon for 4 months in summer. During the couple of months in between we have more-or-less normal days. Includes shots of auroras and the very rare polar stratospheric nacreous clouds, which form when ozone depleting gases crystallize in the upper atmosphere in the intense cold. Summer population is about 1200 people, winter about 200. This is a demo clip I did back in 2005 to demonstrate the potential for time-lapse imgery in Antarctica. It has now been an ongoing project for me for 10 years. I have taken millions of individual photos and worn out a number of cameras. A feature film will be released eventually, keep an eye on my user page or blog for more info. Check out my other videos as well for more of life on the Ice. Successive nights in Aug 2009 at Red Horse Mountain Ranch in Harrison, Idaho Camera: EOS 1DsMark3 and EOS 5DMark2 Lenses: 16-40mm, 15mm fisheye Exposure: Mostly f2.8, 30-seconds per exposure, 30 seconds apart (+2 over-exposure) Strung together using iMovie Note1: that's a thunderstorm in the middle. The lightning was mokre flashes than bolts, unfortunately. The camera got a bit wet, but nothing serious as it was under a tiny hut roof. Note2: The bright star is Jupiter. Not the moon. Jupiter happens to be the closest to the Earth in its orbit, and it's directly opposite the sun, making very bright (like that of a full moon).

Time lapse: the difference between summer and winter in Finland
This video consists of two synced time lapse sequences. One taken during the darkest winter and the other during the brightest summer. This demonstrates the huge difference in lighting conditions in the far north. All images were taken with a regular webcam. Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea's two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear). Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking for now. - All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi has been completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things. - I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful. - Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues. - The songs I used in the video are 1) Zhu Fengbo - "Olive Tree" and 2) The Kingpins - "L'aventurier" - visit the Kingpins website if you want to know more, they are very cool I think. - This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement.
