Hedy Lamarr

One of the most beautiful women to ever grace the screen, Hedy Lamarr was born in Vienna in 1914. Hedy was also a talented scientist who developed a spread spectrum technique now used in wireless communication today. Shown here are scenes from Ecstasy (1933), Algiers (1938), Comrade X (1940) Come Live With Me (1941), Ziegfeld Girl (1941), The Heavenly Body (1941), The Conspirators (1944), The Strange Woman (1946), Samson and Delilah (1949), The Love of Three Queens (1954). Songs included excerpts from Vienna - City of My Dreams and also Hey There Delilah (Plain White T's)...obviously I chose since they match Hedy's birthplace and her most succcessful box office hit, Samson and Delilah. I thank An for some clips :) and Claudia for her ideas :)

Lamarr also co-invented -- with composer George Antheil -- an early technique for spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping, necessary to wireless communication from the pre-computer age to the present day. Lamarr made 18 films from 1940 to 1949 even though she had two children during that time (in 1945 and 1947). After leaving MGM in 1945, she enjoyed her biggest success as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah, the highest-grossing film of 1949, with Victor Mature as the Biblical strongman. However, following her comedic turn opposite Bob Hope in My Favorite Spy (1951), her career went into decline. She appeared only sporadically in films after 1950, one of her last roles being that of Joan of Arc in Irwin Allen's critically panned epic The Story of ...

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use. A tribute to Viennese actress Hedy Lamarr (1913-2000), considered by some to be the most beautiful actress ever. Tony Bennett's "Stranger In Paradise" seems to compliment the photos of the exotic Lamarr, who, after some films in her native Austria (including the racy "Ecstacy" in 1933), was signed to MGM but was usually given decorative roles, much to the intellectual actress's dismay. Among her best remembered films are "Algiers" (1938), "Ziegfeld Girl" (1941) in which she costarred with Judy Garland, Lana Turner and James Stewart, "Boom Town" with Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and Claudette Colbert, "Her Highness And The Bellboy" (1945), "Strange Woman" (1946), "Dishonored Lady" (1947) and "Samson And Delilah" (1949). The end of the 40s saw her career fade, and in the last years of her life she lived in Atamonte Springs, Florida, and her eyesight began to fail her in the 1980s. In 1997, the anti-jamming device she had co-created during WWII brought her new recognition and she sent her son to accept her accolade on her behalf. She passed away from natural causes in 2000. Four times married, once to British actor John Loder ...

Room 101 S03E08 Mark Lamarr Part 1/3

Original Air Date—26 September 1997. The 50's throw back's appearance on Room 101. Based on the room of the same name in Orwell's 1984, Room 101 began in 1992 on Radio 4, before vaulting to TV two years later, whilst the radio series ceased. Hosted on Radio 4 and BBC TWO by Nick Hancock, and from 1999 by Paul Merton, Room 101 has a simple premise. Celebrity guests come on and consign to Room 101 anything they particularly loathe and despise, arguing with the host as to the merits of chucking Football, France or Novelty Underpants to oblivion. At its best Room 101 is deliciously biting about institutions that we hate - and fantastic argument fodder when someone rubbishes something you love.

Hedy Lamarr: Movie star, inventor of WiFi

Hollywood is a place where folks are often recognized more for their looks than their talent - and actress Hedy Lamarr was no exception. But it's what she invented in her spare time - to help end that war - that has history turning a kinder eye, linking her to a bombshell of a whole different sort. Lee Cowan reports:
