Six Dances (1986) by Jiri Kylian's "Black and White Ballets" Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Dancers: Karine Guizzo, Caroline Armenta, Lisa Drake, Nancy Euverink, Paul Lightfoot, Johan Inger, Patrick Delcroix, Urtzi Aranburu, Fiona Lummis, Elke Schepers, Ivan Dubreuil, Ken Ossola, Stefan Zeromski The piece to the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Six German Dances", like all the others is new and witty. Many of the 8 dancers' actions are coarse and speedy , full of threats, unrest and absurdity. The men wear powdered periwigs above their naked torsi. The ladies are clothed in drastic skirts. And in the illumination of the spotlights, scintillating soap bubbles fall from the rigging loft in cascades down upon the dancers. The equally witty and bizarre scene is a winking paean and pomp, ending in clouds of wig powder and soap bubbles. Images full of humour and comedy prove once more what an imaginative, charismatic power Jiri Kilian possesses. The delicious humour of the piece moved numerous viewers and reviewers to remark that the Salzburg composer would have enjoyed it. Even if "Six Dances" appears to be no more than a sparklingly witty assembly of nonsense carried out in costumes designed by the choreographer himself, who calls them "Mozartian underwear", there is still a dark, ominous undertone. As "The Scotsman" wrote: " ...that is what's so wonderful about Kylian's work: it is never quite what it seems to be."

SINFONIETTA Czech-born Kylian was inspired by the beautiful music of his compatriot, Janaacek, to create this fluid, spacious, romantic ballet which has become a milestone in contemporary choreography. The forceful fanfares of Janaacek's music are matched by a ceaselessly energetic and exuberant display of movement, creating and image which carries through the composer's intention of evoking the spirit of the "modern, free Czech." SYMPHONY IN D In Symphony in D Kylian demonstrates his remarkable ability to create a highly inventive and graceful ballet which is, at the same time, extremely funny. Set to Haydn's Symphony No.101 (The Clock) and Symphony No. 73 (The Chase), it is an affectionate send-up of classical ballet poses and is performed with great wit and style by the Nederlands Dans Theater. STAMPING GROUND Stamping Ground is a unique and original ballet, inspired by Kylian's experience of Aboriginal culture and dance, which led him to seek out the universal qualities that underlie both modern ballet and a style of dancing that has survived in Australia for over 40000 years. Stamping is the most important element in Aboriginal dance. Each tribe has its own way of dancing and his own Stamping Ground. In his ballet, Kylian allows the dancers to develop their individual personalities and relationships with each other within the dance group through the idiom of the choreography. Falling Angels (1989) by Jiri Kylian's "Black and White Ballets", The Nederlands Dans Theater Music by Steve Reich Dancers: Fiona Lummis, Susan Laraghy, Lorraine Blouin, Carolina Armenta, Cora Bos-Kroese, Lisa Drake, Sol Leon, Bregje Van Balen Steve Reich's energetic and moving piece for percussion, with it highly associative title "Drumming Part 1", was inspired by percussion rituals in Ghana. Jiri Kylian shapes an energetic, tumultuous action to it. Sice the rituals of the West Africans are always accompanied by dances, the choreography supplements this essential component to complete the piece of music. In Kylian's view, the drums evoke dreams, and so he gives his imagination free rein in this piece. It wanders through the changing rythms and primitive African beat, producing an extremely exciting dance. In Falling Angels, the 8 female dancers are also influenced by lighting. long, bright stripes are drawn and held fast in the shadows of the darkened stage. Between these stripes, a series of heads appears and vanishes again, then a sequence of crossed arms. The strict beauty of the movement of arms and torsi is breathtaking. Like the music, the lighting here underscores the structure of the choreography, accentuating its construction and proceeding, a characteristic always to be found in Kylian's work. The piece is performes with a hellish brio by 8 women in grey costumes and small white shoes, which are accented by their carefully rolled-down socks. The dancers plunge ...
