As I played the beat over and over trying to write lyrics, I kept finding myself distracted. By the TV, by twitter, by trivial things. I realized then that the beat was asking me to write about Distractions. Beats talk to me. They tell me what to rap about, they suggest a guest for the song. One of the things I was distracted by was the news coming from Tahrir Square last year. The Arab Spring was unlike anything I've seen in my lifetime. Beginning with a vegetable cart owner named Mohammed Bouazizi setting himself on fire in Tunisia to protest general unfair treatment, the Arab Spring spread like wildfire to Sudan and then to Egypt, as thousands of protestors occupied Tahrir Square to call for corrupt president Hosni Mubarak to step down. The first line that I wrote for my song Distractions was, "they say it ain't about the spoils of war, but turn around and tell you how much more the oil will cost." The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975, airs Feb. 9th, 2012 on Independent Lens. The interview was produced last month by ITVS. Hip Hop for Respect was a 2000 project which released one EP for Rawkus Records. It was organized by Mos Def and Talib Kweli to speak out against police brutality in general, and the case of Amadou Diallo in particular, Amadou Diallo had been shot and killed by the New York City Police Department the previous year when he attempted to retrieve his wallet and the police fired 41 shots at the unarmed man, so the subject of police brutality was prevalent. The project aimed to assemble 41 emcees to represent the 41 shots. Rappers featured on the EP include Kool G Rap, Rah Digga, Sporty Thievz, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Common, Pharoahe Monch, Posdnous, Dante & Main Flow of Mood, Nine, Tiye Phoenix, Breezly Brewin' of Juggaknots, Punchline, Imani Uzuri, EL-P & Mr. Len of Company Flow, Jah Born of Medina Green, What? What?, John Forté, Fre, J-Live, Rubix, Invincible, Wordsworth, AL, Kofi Taha, Tame One, Jane Doe, Grafh, Shyheim, Channel Live, Wise Intelligent, Crunch Lo, Rock of Heltah Skeltah, Nonchalant, Ras Kass, Dead Prez, & Parrish Smith. Get Black Star's Music: www.amazon.com & itunes.apple.com Black Star arose from the underground movement of the late 1990s, which was in large part due to Rawkus Records, an independent record label stationed in New York City. They released one self titled album. Though the record achieved little commercial success, they (and other members of the Native Tongues Posse) helped shape underground alternative rap and helped bring it further into the mainstream eye. Both have gone on to greater commercial and critical success in separate solo careers. Black Star's emergence into the hip-hop scene came at a crucial point in music history. Following the deaths of both Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, hip-hop was consumed in a world of chaos. Black Star attempted to bring reconciliation in the wake of these violent deaths. The self titled album contains various references to Biggie and Tupac, and attempts to create reconciliation in the hip-hop world: "I said one, two, three. It's kinda dangerous to be an MC They shot Tupac and Biggie. Too much violence in hip-hop." In 2001, Black Star performed "Money Jungle" with Ron Carter and John Patton for the Red Hot Organization's compilation album Red Hot + Indigo, a tribute to Duke Ellington, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease. Talib Kweli Talks Gutter Rainbows, Prisoners Of Conscious, Goonish Rap & Being A Better Writer
After performing at The Roundhouse in London on the 17th of this month, Talib Kweli invited SoulCulture down to the studio the next day, where he was joined by Akon-affiliated UK emcee Sway to record a song together. In-between recording and shooting a music video in London, Kweli spoke to SoulCulture TV about his displeasure at the gig of the night before, his experiences of the UK's Capital and why he chose to shoot a video here for a song from his new album, Gutter Rainbows. He also discusses how he perceives his lyrical growth across albums and another album he is also working on titled Prisoners Of Conscious, describing the former project as "like the early outtakes of Prisoners Of Conscious, but embellished upon."

Kweli says that he knew "College Drop Out" was a classic when he first heard it. Hi-Tek adds that Kanye is a genius in the same way that Dr Dre is. I personally remember getting the white label vinyl of "Through The Wire" "Two Words" that Kanye paid to press up himself because at that time Def Jam and The Roc weren't pushing him out. I also remember being at the Def Jam office's in NY (during CMJ) with the Rap Attack DJ's telling them that they needed to get behind that record because we were all getting great feedback at our college radio stations.
