Ray Kurzweil: The Coming Singularity

bigthink.com Futurist Ray Kurzweil details the technology timeline leading up to 2029 including the downsides to Singularity.

Ray Kurzweil - Futurist

[Recorded July 13 2009] Ray Kurzweil is a 21st century polymath. He is a scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, author, visionary and futurist. As a scientist and inventor he has pioneered work in optical character recognition (OCR), speech recognition technology, and electronic keyboard instruments. As an entrepreneur, Kurzweil has founded businesses in the fields of OCR, music synthesis, speech recognition, reading technology, virtual reality and financial investment. He is the author of numerous books on health, artificial intelligence (AI), the technological singularity and futurism. The Kurzweilian version of the future is the inevitable merger of humans and intelligent machines. In this discussion with Computer History Museum Senior Curator Dag Spicer, Kurzweil shares his vision of how technology will re-shape the human body (and culture generally) into one that incorporates advanced technologies into a new type of post-human organism. Kurzweil sees this transformation occurring over the next 20 to 50 years and beginning with the integration of electronic-based systems into the human body. Some decades after that, a further transformation occurs--one based on nanotechnology—which incorporates the manipulation and construction of interfaces and complex systems based on atomic-level structures that merge with and control specific bodily functions and attack its problems (ie cancer). Some of the philosophical implications of Kurzweils vision are also discussed.

The Singularity of Ray Kurzweil

Watch the rest of the series: vice.com Ray Kurzweil tells us about his vision of the Singularity—a point around 2045 when computers will acquire full-blown artificial intelligence and technology will infuse itself with biology. His theories have all sorts of supporters, detractors, and critics, but do you even remember what life was like before three-year-olds had cell phones and you actually had to remember facts instead of relying on the internet? That was only 10 years ago. If Kurzweil is right, we'll have supercomputers more powerful than every human brain on the planet combined within a few decades. Technology will accelerate exponentially. Within 25 years, computers will have consciousness. Humans will soon be bionic. These predictions make bestselling author Ray Kurzweil (The Singularity Is Near) a prophetic genius to some, and a "highly sophisticated crackpot" to others. There is no question, however, that he has predicted the future with more accuracy than anyone else in history.

Authors@Google: Ray Kurzweil

Ray Kurzweil visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "The Web Within Us: When Minds and Machines Become One." This event took place on July 1, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series. At the onset of the 21st century, it will be an era in which the very nature of what is means to be human will be both enriched and challenged, as our species breaks the shackles of its genetic legacy, and achieves inconceivable heights of intelligence, material progress, and longevity. The paradigm shift rate is now doubling every decade, so the twenty-first century will see 20000 years of progress at todays rate. Computation, communication, biological technologies (for example, DNA sequencing), brain scanning, knowledge of the human brain, and human knowledge in general are all accelerating at an even faster pace, generally doubling price-performance, capacity, and bandwidth every year. Three-dimensional molecular computing will provide the hardware for human-level "strong" AI well before 2030. The more important software insights will be gained in part from the reverse-engineering of the human brain, a process well under way. While the social and philosophical ramifications of these changes will be profound, and the threats they pose considerable, celebrated futurist Ray Kurzweil presents an inspiring vision of our ultimate destiny in which we will merge with our machines, can live forever, and are a billion times more intelligent...all within the next three ...

KURZWEIL PC3 - DXHone

A small tune starts at 2:40 This is a demo of a program I did. I wanted a substitute for one of my favourite Yamaha 6OP DX-Style sounds. I love them for their deep living modulation and expressive response to velocity. At the PC3 it is done with "shaping" synthesis, it´s quite similar to what the old KORG 01/W can do. But for my experience so far it´s not that clean and deep like the second generation of FM-Synths (for example DX7II, SY77) are able to sound. But it comes quite close. I will be going on to develop sounds like these and I am looking forward what possibilities for FM-synthesis will be offered in the next PC3 operation-system. Current version is 2.03. BTW: I used this tune and some others in this video. It was supposed to be music for a moped-documentation and here it is: www.youtube.com

An avid futurist, and as some say a transhumanist, he wants to understand what technological advances the future is going to bring. Want to know what the technology of the future will look like? Ray can imagine it. Not without his share of critics, he believes we will have enough solar energy to meet our needs in 16 years and a complete understanding of how the human brain works in the next 20 years. "Evolution is a spiritual process," he says, bringing us closer to "the ideal of God." Ray Kurzweil on how technology will transform us, Best Memory Vitamins

www.excelerol.com - Best Memory Vitamins Inventor, entrepreneur, visionary, Ray Kurzweil's accomplishments read as a startling series of firsts -- a litany of technological breakthroughs we've come to take for granted. Kurzweil invented the first optical character recognition (OCR) software for transforming the written word into data, the first print-to-speech software for the blind, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, and many electronic instruments. Yet his impact as a futurist and philosopher is no less significant. In his best-selling books, which include The Age of Spiritual Machines and The Singularity Is Near When Humans Transcend Biology (which is set to become a movie in 2008), Kurzweil depicts in detail a portrait of the human condition over the next few decades, as accelerating technologies forever blur the line between human and machine.

Complete Premium video at: fora.tv Author, inventor, and futurist Ray Kurzweil explains that even though immortality may seem a far-off goal, it could be achievable by people who are alive today. He argues that immortality will come not from a silver bullet cure for aging, but rather a series of "bridges" that will eventually lead to eternal life. ----- On November 30th and December 1st, 2010, at the TIME Conference Center in New York City, many of the most innovative people and organizations in the science and technology world came together for an historic gathering - the 2010 World Technology Summit & Awards, the eighth Summit and ninth Awards thus far! - to celebrate each other's accomplishments; to explore what is imminent, possible, and important in and around emerging technologies; and to create the kinds of serendipitous relationships that create the future.
