The Art of Stanley Kubrick

a good documentary. Title speaks for itself

Stanley Kubrick - The Works

A visionary, a master of his craft, an artist. Stanley Kubrick is my all time favorite director. For years I've rewatched his films MANY times and no films from any other director have affected me the same way Kubrick's have. Each and every film of his is an experience. Whether it be the spine tingling chills of 'The Shining' or the tear inducing laughs of 'Dr. Strangelove,' Kubrick's films always stick with the viewer. With this edition of 'The Works' I really wanted to channel what I feel makes Kubrick's films so special. So here you are, an extra long tribute that chronicles a lifetime of works from one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived. Stanley, no one will ever make films as timeless as your own. (I apologize for the absence of 'Fear and Desire' I was unable to obtain a copy of it. But even Kubrick himself stated that he never looked on that film fondly. He saw it as merely a learning exercise). As for a for my next director tribute, I will not be giving out a hint this time. However, you can expect a sneak peek very soon! Everyone loves surprises right? Martin Scorsese on Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and DW Griffith

I have been working on an idea, an editing project idea if you will, of a 15-minute video essay documenting all of DW Griffith's important contributions to the craft of filmmaking that survive to this day and have formed the basic grammar and lexicon of filmmaking. IF I ever get around to doing it, I'll post it on my channel. Until then, watch one of the greatest film historians and most vocal film lovers of all time, Scorsese, share his thoughts on two of the most instrumental filmmakers of the twentieth century.

Frame By Frame: Stanley Kubrick

UNL Film Studies professor Wheeler Winston Dixon explores the work of American director Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick (July 26, 1928 -- March 7, 1999) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and cinematographer, who lived in England during most of the last four decades of his career. Kubrick was noted for the scrupulous care with which he chose his subjects, a slow method of working, the variety of genres he worked in, technical perfectionism, reluctance to talk about his films, and reclusiveness. He maintained almost complete artistic control, but with the rare advantage of big-studio financial support for all his endeavors. Several of his films were considered cinematically groundbreaking, including 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) noted among the most scientifically realistic and visually innovative science-fiction films ever made; Barry Lyndon (1975), with its use of specially-designed super fast lenses to capture low-light scenes; The Shining (1980), the first film to use the new Steadicam extensively to allow stabilized and fluid tracking of motion. Kubrick was cinematographer for four of his thirteen films, and produced, directed, and wrote all or part of the screenplays for nearly all his films. All of Kubrick's films from the mid-1950s onward, except The Shining, were nominated for Oscars, Golden Globes, or BAFTAs. Although he was nominated for an Academy Award as a screenwriter and director on several occasions, his only personal win was for the ...

Inside the Kubrick Maze

Mazes, or labyrinths, are found throughout Stanley Kubricks films. They signal the protagonist's loss of self. Heading nowhere in particular, they go about in circles, and surrender themselves to a system that operates according to strictly regular instructions. As they have no sense of direction, they often find themselves in jeopardy once inside the maze. Sometimes, they are followed (Lolita, Eyes Wide Shut). Other times, they meet with a representation of the Minotaur (2001, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket). Their only refuge is to counter the system's impassiveness with human consciousness and creativity. In chronological order, this overview includes clips from The Killing, Paths of Glory, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut. When somebody that meticulous plans something, anything that goes wrong seems to wreak havoc."

Inside the Kubrick Bathroom

Bathrooms appear throughout Stanley Kubricks films. In alchemy, the term "bath", along with other code words such as "grave", "prison", "room" etc. refers to the retort or matrass used for the purification process of base material ("prima materia"). In addition, bathrooms denote the "putrefaction" stage of this process, during which old material was left to rot and decompose. Two suicides occur in Kubrick's bathrooms. In "The Shining", a young, naked woman in a bath tub turns out to be an dead, old, decaying woman. The soldiers in "Full Metal Jacket" use the phrase, "A world of shit" as a standard expression.
