Re: Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us

Web 2.0 will force us to rethink everything through publishing more of the written word?

Students Helping Students

Created by the Spring 2010 Class of Digital Ethnography to get the word out about K-State Proud, an organization that helps students help students. Over the past 3 years, students have donated over $250000 to keep their fellow students in school when they need it most, like when their house has been taken by a tornado, their belongings have been taken by a flood, or when a serious illness drains them of their last dollar and the will to go on. Go to www.k-stateproud.org or join us in the K-State Union Feb 22-26 2010 to find out more. The song is "I Need Want It" by Purse Candy. Free Download: www.last.fm

This is a video I put together during a digital ethnography course at Kansas State University in the Spring of 2007

A Vision of Students Today

a short video summarizing some of the most important characteristics of students today - how they learn, what they need to learn, their goals, hopes, dreams, what their lives will be like, and what kinds of changes they will experience in their lifetime. Created by Michael Wesch in collaboration with 200 students at Kansas State University. Hem - Peace At Last

A music video made by combining some footage I shot with some driving footage from CL Evans. The song is "Peace At Last" by Hem.

You tube & Popularity

This is a video a produced for a KSU Digital Ethnography class in the Spring of 2007. It covers popularity in the Youtube community.

Authenticity on the Tube

Draft video of how authenticity is determined on the tube. This video is a compilation of videos used to discuss authenticity on YouTube. LonelyGirl15 is an example of authenticity or lack thereof, as her vlogs helped shape how vloggers define authentic and inauthentic, despite the ability to create new identities, enviroments, and so forth. We are all creative producers with the ability to act to some degree and manipulate. However, how candid we are seems to reflect our authenticity. again, all videos are content from the users of this site. This is a draft, so feel free to comment, suggest, etc! (intro credit to user ChannelReviews, Lonelygirl song credit to DeeMontreal) (more vlogs when i finish moving in)

Acoustic space

incomplete final draft of my video for my digital ethnography class at Kansas State University. Mid-way through making this video I had the urge to take another direction, but didn't have the time.

Information R/evolution

This video explores the changes in the way we find, store, create, critique, and share information. This video was created as a conversation starter, and works especially well when brainstorming with people about the near future and the skills needed in order to harness, evaluate, and create information effectively. Education, Privacy, and YouTube

The idea of blackmail....and privacy from "important people". My videos have a few different audiences, which usually see different sides of me. these worlds collide on video presentations to not only the youtube community, but others.....does this mean no obscene jokes or gestures? gahh... After saying that, allow me to become a bit more professional. here is the link to the Chronicle of Education. Great website to see what projects are going on at different universities, showing the face of research. chronicle.com

Reasons "Why We Tube?"

This was part of a class project of an ethnography of YouTube. My role was to explain "Why Do You Tube?" using the original 370 responses that "boh3m3" received. The project took place during the Spring semester of 2007 at Kansas State University. Touchless Society

We cant touch. we cant look. That is unhealthy... I am part of a team of researchers doing an ethnography of YouTube culture for a class at Kansas State University taught by Dr. Michael Wesch (mwesch). We are creating a video documentary of YouTube that will be posted to YouTube at the conclusion of our research. We will also be writing papers and giving conference presentations on this research. On the Walls of Belfast

This is a short video of still photographs of the Belfast Murals.

The Internet Has A Face (New Music)

This video explores the human connections through video, and how video has changed or enhanced interactions on the internet. It was created for a digital ethnography class at kansas state but has lead to much more. it is the same as the last video, however the music has been changed (emergency music swap out). Moby probably wouldnt appreciate me using his music, even if in the name of academia!

Spread of Ideas on YouTube - Political YouTube

As a short addition to a study of YouTube, this piece notes the changes in campaigning and of political dialogue on YouTube from previous mediums.

Beauty "Evolution"

The influence of media on the social construction of beauty. This uses a Dove soap commercial to demonstrate how unobtainable beauty standards are in today's social environment. Unilever owns both the Dove and Axe brands.

My take on the reality question

Reality as a cultural construct. Is there an objective reality? is it all subjective? I try to answer my own question on whether YouTube produces reality...and FAIL to watch the time. my bad. Duck and Cover

Duck and Cover was a suggested method of personal protection against the effects of a nuclear detonation which the United States government taught to generations of United States school children from the late 1940s into the 1980s. This is an edit version of the video with a social commetary of the Family Guy at the end.

Digital Ethnography is on the NEWS

Today, perhaps 7 hours ago, a news station was in our classroom doing a story on our project. about 6 hours ago i called my mother. and about a half hour ago, i watched it. www.49abcnews.com (the YouTube Story with KSU) If you dont know already, I'm a part of a class at Kansas State University..digital ethnography. Essentially, were doing a cultural study of YouTube. Not just an ethnography done digitally, but of the digital... Be sure to check out our professor's video, Web 2.0 (by mwesch). This is my reaction. with a dramatic look off to the left in the beginning.

Authenticity

Close to my previous question...what are the hallmarks of authenticity? when does a video start to stray from it? I noticed my physical pose here does look a little staged, but ive been sitting like that for hours. it works out on that chair. somehow. Appreciating High Fives - Take 3

A take on my previous video about the effects of high fives from friends and strangers. Same as the first two drafts with some freeze frame, slow motion, audio enveloping, still image panning and video effects.

Class Among the Nacirema

This video explores the distinction between money and power among the Nacirema.

Vlog 2, Privacy and Voyeurism on "the tube"

I was just so excited that I made a second string of taped incoherent babble. But i was thinking...its amazing, we speak into this device in hopes that an audience, anonymous or not, will hear. long after the words were actually uttered....

Vlog 6ish YouTube and Reality

Reality and real world really need to be redefined. excuse my hypocritical use of real world over and over...its embedded in my head man!

Vlog 1

My first Vlog, guys! milestone! I am currently at peak excitement about my new computer toys, my webcam that was lost in iowa, and am too flustered to be coherent. enjoy!

Addictive Technology 3.0

As a final draft of the past two videos (thus, its 3.0), this clip is a playful exploration of the theme of technology as an addictive narcotic. The purpose of the video was to explore some creative editing techniques in vegas, as well as a warm up for my imagination. Enjoy!
