There are 20000 defectors from North Korea in South Korea, but escape from that regime is only the start of their battle for a better life. Will they adjust to life in the modern peninsula? A school has been set up to help the defectors adjust to their new life despite opposition from local residents who saw "communists as having horns or being scary", or indeed being "criminals". As the principal of the school says "everything is a challenge", from physical ailments caused by famine to having to "unlearn" a lifetime's worth of indoctrination. Many fled because the famine proved too much to bear. Around 80% have seen close relatives starve. The school does what it can to help these people adjust but the "culture shock" as the school's Director describes it, is "vast". We can only hope that having survived the famine, they can now survive their free and competitive new home. SBS

Rockets over North Korea: Stunning video of Pyongyang's festive fireworks
Rockets exploded above North Korea Sunday, this time in celebration, as a glittering fireworks display lit up the night sky of Pyongyang. The pyrotechnics show was part of the climax to days of special events intended to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, officially revered in North Korea as its founding leader. On Sunday night, sound and light erupted above the Taedong River, which runs through the centre of capital Pyongyang. The main backdrop to the show was a monument called "The Tower of the Juche Idea." Juche is an ideology which North Korean authorities say was developed by Kim Il Sung. It is often translated into English as "self reliance." Earlier Sunday, North Korea's new leader Kim Jong Un made his first known televised public speech - a major departure from the style of his father and predecessor as leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Il. Japan wants missile shield against N.Korean rockets
North Korea has announced it will launch a rocket next month, which will put a satellite into orbit. But the US and its allies see the plans as counter to international diplomatic efforts to deal with the reclusive state's nuclear programme - and are worried the technology could be used to develop long range missiles in the future. It could also potentially violate UN Security Council resolutions, and threatens last month's deal between North Korea and the Washington. Under this, Pyonyang was to freeze its uranium weapons program and its long-range missile activities - in return for American food aid. Japan's has responded by deploying its own missile defense system to shoot down any rocket threatening its territory. Buddhist monks caught playing poker in South Korea
It's the oldest and most respected major religion in South Korea. And now it's been spectacularly brought into ill-repute after senior monks from the largest Buddhist order in the country were caught red-handed setting a bad example by indulging in a cheeky little poker game. Gambling in the country is illegal everywhere except for inside just one casino that's in the north east of the country. So it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that these monks - who are from the Jogye Order - seen here smoking, drinking and flipping playing cards on the floor of a luxury hotel room are flouting the law. As soon as the footage was aired on national TV yesterday, 6 of the 8 monks in the room offered to resign. Leader Master Jinjea, a high-ranker from the order -- who wasn't even there at the time - said on local TV 'Those monks committed a foolish act and I confess my sin for their wrongdoings' It was a fellow monk who secretly shot the footage and then tipped off the police and the media. As for the clothing, they weren't as cheap as I imagined but the quality was better than a lot of Hong Kong clothes. I've spent the past few days catching up on rest and settling in. Full recipe on my website: www.maangchi.com Korean version of this video: www.youtube.com 녹차 찹쌀떡: www.youtube.com Ingredients For sweet red bean filling: red beans, sugar, salt, rice syrup, vanilla extract For rice cake: sweet rice flour, sugar, salt, red food coloring, starch powder. Directions (Cooking time: 2 hours) Make sweet red bean filling: 1. Wash and drain 1 cup of dried red beans (azuki beans) and place them in a thick bottomed pot. 2. Add 3 cups of water and bring to a boil over medium high heat for 10 minutes with the lid closed. 3. Lower the heat and simmer for about 1½ hours. If the beans haven't softened after 1½ hours, add more water and cook over low heat until they are soft and can be well mashed. 4. Mash the beans with a wooden spoon (or food processor) until smooth. 5. Put the beans back into the pot and add ¾ cup brown sugar, ¼ ts salt, 1 ts vanilla extract, and 2-3 tbs rice or corn syrup. 6. Stir with a wooden spoon over low heat until the sugar is dissolved and the paste looks a little shiny. 7. Divide the paste into 2 even halves. Keep one half of the paste in the fridge or freezer for future use. 8. Divide the remaining paste into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Set them aside.
