BEHIND THE SONG & LYRICS: The start of the season 2010/2011 was the worst in 50 years for Liverpool FC. Songwriter Bjorn Tore Hals , Namsos, Norway, in the ECC Band, is also an eager Liverpool fan. The frustration over the performance on the pitch, caused him to write the song "Spion Kop". More a tribute to Liverpool fans around the world, than the team itself . No matter how big defeats Liverpool suffers on the football ground, the fans will always sing from the stand - or in their homes, worldwide. There is no fans, like the Liverpool fans. Liverpool's famous stand, The Kop, takes its name from The battle of Spion Kop in the second boer war in South Africa. The Battle took place about 38 km west-south-west of Ladysmith, on the hilltop of Spioenkop along the Tugela River, Natal from 23--24 January 1900. It was fought between the South African Republic and the Orange Free State on the one hand and British forces during the Second Boer War during the campaign to relieve Ladysmith and resulted in a British defeat. Many football grounds in the English Premier League and Football League, and several in the American, German, French, Hungarian, Japanese, Northern Irish and Scottish leagues, have one terrace or stand in their stadia named "Spion Kop" or "Kop" because of the steep nature of the terracing. The most known of them all is The Kop at Anfield in Liverpool. The chorus of the song could just as easily have been sung by the English soldiers who fought for the Spion Kop ...
