Kookaburra / Down Under Comparison
In 1934, music teacher Marion Sinclair wrote and performed a nursery rhyme about an indigenous bird called the kookaburra. Since then, it has become a fairly popular song, especially in her native Australia. For their hit single, "Down Under", the Australian band, Men at Work, used a flute riff that directly incorporated the melody of Kookaburra. In June 2009, the band was sued for copyright infringement. Although Marion Sinclair died in 1988, the rights to the song went to Larrikin Music, who filed the lawsuit. On February 4th, 2010, the Federal Court Justice of Australia ruled that Men at Work were indeed guilty of copyright infringement, and Larrikin Music seeks up to 60% of the band's earnings from the song. Songs are property of Larrikin Music and Columbia Records, respectively.

Men at Work accused of plagiarism over 'Down Under'
It's one of the most iconic Australian pop songs of all time, but a legal spat has broken out over whether the Men at Work song 'Down Under' is actually a rip-off of a children's song. The '80s anthem rocked its way up the worldwide charts, but the manliness of the song about beer and women has been brought into question by claims it's a Girl Guides song. Lawyers say 'Down Under' is a rip-off of the children's classic 'Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree' which was written in 1934 by Melbourne music teacher, Marion Sinclair, for a Girl Guides competition. Ms Sinclair sold the rights to the song to a music publishing company called Larrikin before she died and now Larrikin wants compensation from Men at Work's labels Sony, BMG and EMI for lost royalties. The music giants say when Sinclair gave the song to the Girl Guides it became theirs and she no longer has any copyright entitlement. The case has begun in Melbourne's federal court where the legal argument will come down to semantics. Does 'Down Under' use a "substantial" part of the tune or not? If Men at Work lose, the 'Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree' owners will have the last laugh. The commercial success of 'Down Under' could mean millions of dollars in compensation.

Lorikeets, Corellas and a Kookaburra
Two corellas muscle in on a lorikeet family having breakfast. A bemused kookaburra flies in to check out the action until it begins to get a little too close for comfort. Although the kookaburra makes some token attempts to repel the loris, I think he really enjoys their antics. He is the teacher to their Sunday school picnic almost every day! And the loris seem to enjoy teasing him. Note that they give his feathers a tug at 2:30.

Kookaburras on the Nest in Newcastle - Part 1
This is video of a family of 4 baby and 3 adult Kookaburras nesting in a Tree hole in a Suburb of Newcastle. I have hung a webcam upside down over the hole so not to prevent their normal line of access. You'll see in the 3rd minute of Video one of the parents spot the camera for the first time and give it a full check out. Only that one adult of the 3 adults has done that so far! The stench in the hole is something else!!....and the chicks are not against firing the shitty stuff at a parent as it enters! Urgh! Its rare to have 4 kookaburra chicks in a nest let alone to have 4 survive this long. Check back for further parts to this story and i'll sort out the audio humming issue too.

Race 1: Stars & Stripes VS Kookaburra III - 1987 America's Cup
America's Cup celebrates the 25th anniversary of Dennis Conner's victory on Stars and Stripes in 1987 in Fremantle, Australia. Race 1: Stars and Stripes vs. Kookaburra III. After twice successfully defending the America's Cup, Dennis Conner suffered a historic defeat in 1983, becoming the first American to lose the Cup in its 132 year history. Conner's loss to Australia II made him even more determined to win the Cup back. Four years later in Australia he returned in his new boat Stars & Stripes, and along with his all-American team of sailors, took a resounding 4-0 win to bring the America's Cup back to the United States. The victory made Conner a true legend in the sport, and our 'America's Cup 1987, 25th Anniversary' video looks back at this historic moment, and looks ahead to the 34th edition of the Cup, where Team USA's ORACLE Racing will attempt to defend the Cup in San Francisco, 2013.
