I shot this footage last night after the screening of the feature length film 'Mars' during the Vermont International Film Festival. This video basically shows 'American Elf' artist James Kochalka (Very cool guy) and the director of the film, Geoff Marslett, talking about the film. The main reason I went to this paticular screening was because of James' presence, being a fan of his American Elf comics, I had to attend. The movie was a comic-book style film about a mission to Mars, and the film was rather interesting, not just because of James' minor role as a cast member. He has since moved to the digital format and these chemical prints have become a priceless reminder of a receding era. James Kochalka is a prolific cartoonist; the creator of many modern alternative comic classics such as Monkey vs. Robot, American Elf, Peanutbutter and Jeremy & Fancy Froglin. He recently has been exhibiting original "Little Paintings" at Giant Robot in LA, San Francisco, NY, and at Galerie Monastiraki in Montreal. This video features interviews with the artist at his home in Vermont, as well as a live music performance at Galerie Monastiraki of material from his new solo album "Digital Elf." James Kochalka premiered his Little Paintings 4 series at Giant Robot in San Francisco on Nov. 14, 2009. The series consisted of "somewhere between 130 and 170 new paintings" with a range of subjects that include evil alien overlords, self portraits and kitten warriors. James flew in from Burlington, VT to open the show as well as give a live performance of songs from his new album Digital Elf.
