Neck Knife Kit
Years ago I set up my Newt Livesay NRGS neck knife as a PSK. I have found the concept of the neck knife PSK to be very useful. In this video I show the contents of the kit and discuss some of my reasoning behind the items I include. I've had a few requests for a written list of the kit contents... The rubber is bicycle inner tube cut to length. This rubber also serves as emergency tinder if need be. SHELTER - Seven strand Paracord & handle wrap, Needle and waxed line for clothing repair. This kit is light on shelter resources, but it is a small kit. FIRE - BSA Hotspark, Cotton treated with Vaseline, 2 birthday candles, inner tube rubber. WATER - Two 10 oz milk bags, 20 mg Potassium Permanganate. This would only allow me to treat 20 oz of water at a time and it takes a half hour to treat water with KMnO4. At a water source that would translate into 40 oz an hour which is good enough. SIGNALS - Day/Night Mirror, LED Light, Fire/Smoke, Whistle NAVIGATION - 20 mm Button Compass FOOD - #4 waxed line for snares, traps, or fishing. I give food a very low priority in small survival kits, its just not a killer. You can make a similar kit around many different neck knives. The Becker BK-11 or RAT Izula would be good candidates if you can't find an NRGS. Make your kit what you need it to be for your area and needs. These contents have worked for me for many years from Alaska to Brazil and points in between.

"Level 1" First Aid Kit by Nutnfancy
Sooner or later you will get hurt. And if it's not you, it will be someone in your party. Therefore be smart and self-reliant and always have some medical capability integrated into your systems. Here I cover my first option to do just that, a "Level 1" First Aid kit of my own construction. Siding with the emphasis on "Mobility", this kit doesn't contain supplies to handle every medical emergency. It is designed to handle most of the medical problems I've encountered in my adventuring. And at just 5.5 ounces and being very slim in profile, it is designed for high-speed outdoor, backpacking, tactical, or Xootring adventures (to be explained). This Level 1 kit has an emphasis on stopping blood loss, disinfecting wounds, minor pain stoppage, and bandage exchange. Components of the kit and some of the POU involved are explained; your preferences and needs may vary. Additional Level 1 kit items that I sometimes integrate include: sharp REI tweezers, surgical gloves, moleskin, Gorilla-brand duct tape (unless carried elsewhere in system), superglue vials (for wound closure), ACE bandages, salt and/or electrolyte drink mix (to revive dehydrated hikers), needles, and a scalpel. Integration of these items in the desired Level 1 size and weight constraints may be difficult however and is they are needed than maybe portaging a "Level 2" (more complete) kit would be warranted. Han Bennink on Cheese Kit Diptych - Part 1/3
Cheese Kit Diptych is an installation by artist Walter Willems consisting of two drum kits. In one, full rounds of real (mainly Dutch) cheese sit atop drum stands; in the other, plastic cheese replicas usually found in store display windows are employed. In this absurd setting Willems reinforces the international stereotype of the Dutch by using a classic Dutch export product as its main ingredient. Cheese Kit Diptych was created specifically to be played by world-renowned Dutch improvisational jazz drummer Han Bennink. Bennink, ambassador of the Dutch free jazz scene, is known for his ability to drum on any surface, teeming with humor, virtuosity, and creativity through his animated style. Willems considered his installation incomplete until Bennink played both of the drum kits. The drum performance by Han Bennink was recorded on June 17, 2005 at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art where the Cheese Kit Diptych installation was a featured artwork in the Demons Stole My Soul: rock 'n roll drums in contemporary art exhibition. As part of the performance Bennink also played a conventional drum kit and a pair of wooden shoes. Directed and produced by Walter Willems. Part 1: Sometimes the city is a bad place to be. But millions find themselves linked to the city, living, working, or recreating. Cessation of services, terrorists attacks, economic or governmental collapse, rioting (for a variety of reasons), and devastating NATURAL disasters can transform a usually-bustling and mostly safe urbanscape into a wasteland where emergency services are either overwhelmed or just unavailable. Part 1 of 5 //////////////////// My experiences in the outdoors led me to my Level 2 First Aid Kit concept. More capable in depth and breadth than my also-reviewed "Level 1" First Aid Kit, my Level 2 kit will weigh more and be bulkier but can better handle medium medical emergencies. The kit shown focuses on capabilities in ROL (Rule of Law) situations where the priority is to stabilize the patient and effect transport to better facilities and care (when necessary). In group or vehicular outings, the increased size and weight of a typical Level 2 is more do-able. Similar to the Level 1, this kit still has an emphasis on stemming blood loss, disinfecting, pain stoppage, wound dressing, and bandage exchange. Size and weight are still players in this 5 lb kit and I don't achieve the capabilities of Level 3 or Paramedic-level lifesaving kit. As I say in the vid, that type of kit requires medical training and its use comes with extra liability and concerns as a first responder. However I have the Level 2 kit shown has handled my encountered medical situations adequately and absolutely blows away any other kits I've encountered along this POU. Components of the kit and the foundational "Nutnfancy" philosophies involved are explained. An annotated list of my typical Level 2 Kit may be forthcoming (another project!). Part 2 of 5 //////////////////// My experiences in the outdoors led me to my Level 2 First Aid Kit concept. More capable in depth and breadth than my also-reviewed "Level 1" First Aid Kit, my Level 2 kit will weigh more and be bulkier but can better handle medium medical emergencies. The kit shown focuses on capabilities in ROL (Rule of Law) situations where the priority is to stabilize the patient and effect transport to better facilities and care (when necessary). In group or vehicular outings, the increase in weight and size of the Level 2 makes the extra capabilities more do-able. Similar to the Level 1, this kit still has an emphasis on stemming blood loss, disinfecting, pain stoppage, wound dressing, and bandage exchange. Size and weight are still players in this 5 lb kit and I don't achieve the capabilities of Level 3 or Paramedic-level lifesaving kit. As I say in the vid, that type of kit requires medical training and its use comes with extra liability and concerns as a first responder. However I have the Level 2 kit shown has handled my encountered medical situations adequately and absolutely blows away any other kits I've encountered along this POU. Components of the kit and the foundational "Nutnfancy" philosophies involved are explained. An annotated list of my typical Level 2 Kit may be forthcoming (another project!). Compared to even a quality first aid kit, like ones from Adventure Medical Kits this version has more depth ie multiples of common use items ...
