Beyond Borat - Kazakhstan

Nazarbayev re-elected in landslide victory To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Sacha Baron Cohen's alter ego 'Borat' was a Hollywood hit. But his portrayal of Kazakhstan as a backward and impoverished country has led the Kazakhs to fight against this damaging misconception. Kazakh film director, Rakishev, who made a film in response to Borat, states, "It's easy to cross the line between a joke and an insult". Over the past twenty years Kazakhstan has slowly risen to become a prosperous nation. President Nazarbayev has aimed to 'modernise' the oil rich country, even building a city from scratch. With cutting edge architecture and glittering shopping malls, his people argue, "he is promoting the Kazakh people to a bright future". Whether his presidency has been democratic or not, many Kazakhis feel he has helped the country progress. Yet a closer look shows a country still hosting profound problems. As the controversial President is sworn back in, can the progress continue? A Film By ABC Australia Distributed By Journeyman Pictures April 2011

Kuwait event plays Borat parody as Kazakhstan national anthem

At a Kuwaiti sporting event, a Kazakh participant was horrified, but probably not surprised, that the event coordinators allowed the Borat film's 'national anthem' parody to play instead of the actual Kazakh national anthem. Cruel joke? Excessive amount of stupidity? They just couldn't find a download of the actual Kazakh national anthem anywhere? We'll let you decide. - LOLL

Kazakhstan passes restrictive religion law

Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan's president, has approved a new law aimed at putting an end to religious extremism. The law forces all religious organisations to re-register and bans prayer in state institutions such as schools and prisons. The country's chief imam believes that preventing Muslims from praying will antagonise the Kazakh public. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from Kazakhstan's western city of Aktobe.

Kazakhstan launches environmental initiatives

Kazakhstan is the ninth largest nation in the world and possesses huge oil and gas reserves. The country is also a major polluter. Recently, however, it has made headlines for environmentally friendly initiatives, with a new subway line being installed in the capital and the government arranging for bike lanes on the country's roads. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from Almaty, the Kazakh capital.

Borat Thanked By Kazakhstan Minister for "Boosting Tourism"

'Borat' was officially thanked by the foreign minister of Kazakhstan for the tenfold increase in tourist visas the country has seen since the release of the film. Sacha Baron Cohen's 'Borat' was a mockumentary about a highly ignorant Kazakh man who travels through America in search of Pamela Anderson. Cohen will reprise this filmmaking technique in this year's 'The Dictator'. Astana city, Kazakhstan 2011 / Астана Казахстан

Astana (Kazakh: Астана / Astana / أستانا), formerly known as Akmola (Kazakh: Ақмола / Aqmola, until 1998), Tselinograd (Russian: Целиноград, until 1992) and Akmolinsk (Russian: Акмолинск, until 1961), is the capital and second largest city (after Almaty) of Kazakhstan, with an officially estimated population of 708794 as of 1 August 2010. It is located in the north-central portion of Kazakhstan, within Akmola Province, though administrated separately from the province as a federal city area. Town planning Astana can be divided largely into a few different areas. North of the railway line, which crosses Astana in an east-west direction, are industrial and poorer residential areas. Between the railway line and the river Ishim is the city center, where at present intense building activity is occurring. To the west and east are more elevated residential areas with parks and the new area of government administration to the south of the Ishim. Here many large building projects are underway; for example, the construction of a diplomat quarter, and a variety of different government buildings. By 2030, these quarters are to be completed. The original plans for the new Astana were drawn up by the late Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. Astana's current chief planner, Vladimir Laptev, wants to build a Berlin in a Eurasian style. He has stated that a purely administrative capital such as Canberra is not one of his goals. Architecture The old buildings that remained from the Soviet ...

Bilateral Meeting with President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan and President Barack Obama

thefilmarchive.org March 26, 2012 Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbayev (Kazakh: Нұрсұлтан Әбішұлы Назарбаев [nʊrsʊlˈtɑn æbəʃʊˈlɯ nɑzɑrˈbɑ.jɪf]; Russian: Нурсултан Абишевич Назарбаев [nur.suɫˈtan ɐˈbʲi.ʂɨ.vʲɪt͡ɕ nə.zɐrˈba.jɪf]) (born 6 July 1940) has served as the President of Kazakhstan since the nation's independence in 1991 from the Soviet Union. In April 2011, President Nazarbayev was reelected to another five-year term receiving 95.54 percent of the vote with 89.9 percent of registered voters participating (up from 76.8 percent in the 2005 presidential election). Nazarbayev renamed the former State Defense Committees as the Ministry of Defense and appointed Sagadat Nurmagambetov as Defense Minister on 7 May 1992. The Supreme Council, under the leadership of Speaker Serikbolsyn Abdilin, began debating over a draft constitution in June 1992. The constitution created a strong executive branch with limited checks on executive power. Opposition political parties Ezat, Zheltoqsan and the Republican Party, held demonstrations in Almaty from 10 June-17 calling for the formation of a coalition government and the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Sergey Tereshchenko and the Supreme Council. Kazakh security personnel forcibly put down the protest on 18 June 1992. The Parliament of Kazakhstan, composed of Communist Party legislators who had yet to stand in an election since the country gained its independence, adopted the constitution on 28 January 1993. An April 1995 ...

Allegations of voter fraud in Kazakhstan

The ruling party of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev was set for a crushing election win with over 80 per cent of the vote but with up to two other parties gaining a foothold in parliament, exit polls said. The snap polls had been called early to breathe new life into a system under which Nazarbayev, 71, put economic prosperity before political freedoms and where his party Nur Otan has until now controlled all the seats in parliament. While there have been allegations of election fraud, Nur Otan does possess genuine support across the country. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Kazakhs invest in new Astana

Thirteen years since the rebirth of Astana, in Kazakhstan, the administrative capital is also becoming a regional business and cultural fulcrum, opening up new opportunities for young people from across the country. One of Central Asia's most distinctive cities, the capital of Kazakhstan is celebrating its 13th rebirthday. In the Kazakh language, Astana literally means 'capital'. Before its constructive explosion, its population was less than 300000 -- a Soviet industrial outpost, not the most conveniently located, on the vast Kazakh plains. ... www.euronews.net

Observers slam 'undemocratic' Kazakh election

www.euronews.net International monitors on Monday condemned Kazakhstan's parliamentary election as undemocratic. Observers said there was no real opposition to President Nursultan Nazarbayev's ruling National Democratic Party, which won over 80 percent of the vote. "This election took place in a tightly controlled environment, with serious restrictions on citizens' electoral rights," said Miklos Haraszti, head of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights' observation mission.

Kazakh Eagle Hunters - James Morgan

Two hundred years ago the advance of the Russian empire into Kazakhstan sent many Kazakhs across the border into western Mongolia where they settled in the region of Bayan Ulgii. As the Russians continued to occupy Kazakhstan, traditional Kazakh culture continued to be diluted to the point where, when the soviet union collapsed in 1991..., new prime minister Nursultan Nazirbyaev began offering financial and domestic incentives for diaspora Kazakhs in Bayan Ulgii to relocate back to Kazakhstan. The idea being that they would bring with them traditional practices such as eagle hunting and dombra playing and that this would inspire a revival in the dwindling Kazakh culture and population. I stayed with two families five hours south of Olgii who decided against moving back to Kazakhstan in favour of staying in the mountain range that has now become their home, and as much a part of Kazakhstan as their ancestral land itself. The heads of the two families were brothers and eagle hunting partners. They would saddle up together with golden eagles on their arms and spend afternoons on horseback riding through the Altai mountains looking to hunt rabbits, foxes, mammots, wolves and other game. Eagle hunting only really takes place in winter when animals have the thick winter fur that Kazakhs turn into their infamous fur hats. One of the brother's grandsons would join us on the hunting trips, he had reached twelve and was now ready to learn the art of eagle hunting. He followed the ...
