Wong Kar Wai's 'Ashes of Time' Premieres at Cannes

Kean Wong: And if you can't make it to Cannes, here's a preview of an early work by famous Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai. His film 'Ashes of Time' premiered at Cannes on Sunday. Here's more: Comparing his films to his children, Chinese director Wong Kar Wai says 'Ashes of Time' was like the forgotten middle child. [Wong Kar Wai, Director]: "It is like this this is our first production and this is like, if I compare like all my films with my kids, this is the kid that is not well treated at that point. So we want to do it right this time." Based on Louis Cha's famous martial-art novel 'The Eagle -Shooting heroes', 'Ashes' premiered in 1994. It's shot in the Chinese desert, and tells the story of the novel's two main characters, the Lord of the East and the Lord of the West. But Wong says the technical standards of the release at the time, were not up to par. But when he finally decided to re-work the film, he discovered that the original negatives were all but destroyed. To restore the film, he had to hunt down prints locked up in Chinatown warehouses all over the world. Actor Tony Leung was also at Cannes for the premiere. Leung plays a blind swordsman in 'Ashes,' and has starred in many Wong Kar Wai films. He said a lot had changed since 'Ashes' was filmed. [Tony Leung, Actor]: "What I remember is I used to fight every day on the desert and we have to travel like four hours every day to the shooting location and we are shooting in a very remote place in China, so ...

Things Wong Kar-Wai Taught Me About Love - short film by Alice Dallow

shortsbay.com Sex... longing... rejection... and pain. Inspired by the themes explored in the films of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-Wai, this is a checklist of what to expect from modern love. THINGS WONG KAR-WAI TAUGHT ME ABOUT LOVE 1. You will fall in love only once. Obstacles will prevail. The rest of your life is spent recovering. 2. Anything that distracts you from the pain of your loss is good. Some people are more successful in this regard than others. 3. Eroticising their objects will be the pinnacle of your sexual fulfillment. 4. Desire is kept eternally alive by the impossibility of contact. 5. The most potent way to exist is to occupy someone else's imagination. 6. Technology will only heighten your sense of desolation making you more keenly aware that no one is trying to call. 7. Hook up with someone. Live with them. Sleep with them. Tag along. Don't be fooled. You are only a transitory distraction. Ask for commitment. Declare your love. Watch the set up evaporate. 8. Some coincidences are deliberate. Directed by Alice Dallow 11min, Australia, 2004

In his novel, a mysterious train left for 2046 every once in a while. Everyone who went there had the same intention.....to recapture their lost memories. It was said that in 2046, nothing ever changed. Nobody knew for sure if it was true, because nobody who went there had ever come back- except for one. He was there. He chose to leave. He wanted to change.
