Jewish Parliament's General Assembly: Europe's Jewish Representatives Conclude First Session
The vibrancy and diversity of European Jews took center stage in Brussels as members of the first-ever Jewish Parliament met for a two-day General Assembly. Representing countries from England to Uzbekistan, the 120 member European Jewish Parliament hopes to defend the needs of Jews from Western, Central and Eastern Europe. Online elections in January -- open to everyone -- were devised to attract young unaffiliated Jews and those frustrated with existing forums... The President of the European Jewish Union, Igor Kolomoisky, spearheaded the formation of the EJP. Co-Presidents Vadim Rabinovich and Joel Rubinfeld opened the General Assembly with keynote addresses. One of the European Parliament Members already listening is Antonyia Parvanova from Bulgaria. She was the guest moderator at the EJP assembly. Another female guest on the panel made a special trip from Washington DC...the Jewish Ambassador to the US from Baharain, Houda Nunu. As one of just 36 Jews left in her Muslim country, Ambassador Nunu expressed hope that the Parliament may provide bridges between Europe and Muslim World. The new EJP members spent part of their time in committee action groups, sharing ideas and solutions for the challenges facing their different communities... Jewish settlers shoot Palestinians as Israeli soldiers stand idle
In the latest scandal involving the Israeli military, soldiers stand by and refuse to intervene as extremist Jewish settlers open fire on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. A video clip released by the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem shows armed settlers from Yitzhar settlements, near Nablus, attacked the nearby village of Asira al-Qibliya over the weekend and threw rocks at Palestinian homes, sparking clashes in the area.

Jewish American Sits Almost a Year With No Charges in Bolivian Prison
In a grim Bolivian prison, a lone Jewish American man has languished for nearly a year, uncharged by authorities who have accused him of money laundering, but he says he is innocent of any wrongdoing and refuses to give in. Jacob Ostreicher is a 53-year-old flooring contractor from Brooklyn. It's a family business, selling and installing flooring mostly for commercial clients in the New York City area. In 2008, as the construction industry collapsed in the US, Jacob said he heard from a family friend -- a prominent lawyer in Switzerland -- about a promising investment opportunity: growing rice in Bolivia. Ostreicher said he put $200000 -- his life savings -- into the venture and became a very junior partner in a $25 million project. He said things went well for a year or so. The first harvest yielded nearly 40 million pounds of rice. More than 200 Bolivian workers were employed in the business. Ostreicher helped manage it, traveling frequently to Bolivia. Then in 2011, Bolivian police arrested one of Ostreicher's former employees and accused him of being involved with drug criminals. Ostreicher said he cooperated fully with police -- and then was arrested himself. Prosecutors claimed they were investigating whether the $25 million that started the rice business came from drug money. "So we spent close to $20000 to get together 1300 documents to show them the origin of the money," Ostreicher said. "We provided that to the judge. And the judge gave me my freedom." But six ...

Maccabiah Sports Tournament Celebration in Tel Aviv, Israel: 'Jewish Olympics' Planned for 2013
This week marks 80 years to the birth of the Maccabiah Jewish sports tournament, the third largest sport event in the world. Hundreds of worldwide Maccabi representatives have gathered here in Israel in order to celebrate and plan ahead for the next Maccabiah event in 2013. The event was held in Tel Aviv's port, and opened with a parade of Harley Davidson bikers carrying the flags of all of the previous Maccabiahs. 150 state representatives, youth groups, cheerleaders and musicians participated along with the mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo and the Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Public Diplomacy. German Students Learning Hebrew at Frankfurt University: Jewish Studies Program a Success
You may well wonder why so many Germans are learning Hebrew here at Frankfurt University. Sure, Hebrew is the original language of the Bible, but there are many other reasons and they have nothing to do with theology. 120 students are currently learning Hebrew in the Jewish Studies Program at Frankfurt University, and around 400 have completed the 5 year program. Ten universities across Germany offer Jewish Studies with Hebrew courses and at the moment there are more than 500 students. Hebrew is the only ancient language to have been revived as a modern spoken language. Today, Hebrew still serves as the language of Judaism, and it's also the official language of the state of Israel. Germany is the third-largest source of European tourism to Israel, about 150000 German tourists visited the country in 2011, and the Israel Ministry of Tourism plans to raise that number to 200000 by the end of 2012. The appeal of the holy city is obvious but there are many other reasons to visit Israel. Many tourists from Germany know German can help them if they meet someone who speaks Yiddish, a mixture of German and Hebrew. But now more and more Germans are arriving in Israel with some knowledge of Hebrew to help them better appreciate contemporary Jewish culture and the people living in Israel. Germany's BILD Tabloid Explains Role of Axel Springer in Repairing Relations of Jews and Germans
Axel Springer and the Jews, is a multimedia exhibition documenting the German-Israeli relationship unfolding in the 1950s and 60s on the pages of the tabloid BILD -- German for picture. BILD was founded by Axel Springer in 1952, and then like today it mostly consisted of pictures, it soon became the best-selling tabloid, by a wide margin, not only in Germany, but in all of Europe. Axel Springer had a lot of influence in the 50s and the 60s he brought the Jewish people and the German people closer together so they could understand each other. This exhibition documents the leading role that Axel Springer and his tabloid BILD played on building the relationship of post-war Germany with Israel and the Jewish people, and what is that relationship like today. Urban Outfitters Offends Jews with T-Shirt Design Like the Yellow Star of David Holocaust Badge
American clothing retailer Urban Outfitters is facing criticism for selling a yellow T-shirt with a patch over the breast pocket that resembles the yellow Star of David that Jews were forced to wear by the Nazis. A spokesman for Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust Memorial and Museum, said the design was "in bad taste," and especially with the recent commemorations for Holocaust Remembrance Day, the sale of the shirt provoked strong reactions among Israelis. The Anti-Defamation League sent an email to the CEO of Urban Outfitters which called the shirt "extremely distasteful and offensive." The civil rights group demanded the company stop selling the "Wood Wood Kellog Tee." The Danish-made T-shirt features a six-pointed star which is clearly similar to the Holocaust badges, and it can be found on urbanoutfitters.com for 100 USD. Urban Outfitters is no stranger to controversy, and it has been accused of offending African Americans, Mexicans, and the Irish, among others. In 2004, the ADL complained about another T-shirt which they said reinforced negative stereotypes about Jews and money. That shirt read "Everyone loves a Jewish girl" with images of dollar signs and hearts surrounding the phrase. The company subsequently discontinued that shirt, but Urban Outfitters has not yet responded to the ADL's most recent letter.

Four Killed at Jewish School in France: Rabbi, 3 Children Dead at Ozar Hatorah School in Toulouse
A rabbi, his two children, and a third child were killed outside the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse, France. The attacker fled on a black scooter and has not been identified yet. Several other children were seriously injured, and those who have died have all been under 10 years old. Residents of Toulouse say the school is the centre of the local Jewish community, and the chief rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim, said we was bruised in his body and soul. French President Nicolas Sarkozy came immediately to Toulouse as authorities search for the killer. The Israeli Foreign Ministry responded by expressing outrage at the killings and has immediately called for security to be increased at all Jewish schools in Europe. A member of the European Jewish Parliament representing France, Yael Malka, said the French Jewish community was in a state of shock following the killings. The motive for the murders is still unclear, but a similar attack was carried out several days before. Two French soldiers were killed by a man who also escaped on a scooter. Some fear that a terror group may be operating in southern France.
