Both Frank and Andreas approaches to harmony and rhythm at the start of this tune typify the Gypsy jazz style plenty of diminished and chromatic phrases bolstered by tight, driving rhythms comprised of sparse yet complex chord voicings. Later in the performance, we hear Andreas introduce more blues-based note choices with Frank following suit with his chord voicings and rhythms. Frank then explores a few blues phrases before the boys break into a classically-themed section, illustrating just how far the Gypsy jazz style can be taken. The piece wraps things up while exploring a more traditional approach.

Diminished as a 7b9 Chord (Jazz Guitar Lesson JA-029) How to play

In this guitar lesson we look at the jazz theory concept of using a diminished chord as a 7b9 chord. You should probably check out the jazz lesson series on the web site if you are getting stuck with the concepts here - and there are notes about this lesson there too - and I think it is easier to read some of this stuff than listen - helps you understand it faster, imho. It's kind of a chord substitution (you'll often see it called that) but I think it is more just using a shape a different way, it's not really a substitution in the proper sense of the word... more on the web site about that!Taught by Justin Sandercoe. FULL COURSE, NOTATION, JAM TRACKS: bit.ly Jazz guitar lessons: bit.ly Jazz guitar is a wide open place where innovation, interpretation and experimentation run rampant. All of the rules are meant to be broken and the music is played in the moment. One player's ceiling is another player's floor and you can study the form for years and still be nowhere. All this is why we love it so. Jazz is also a highly subjective art form where beauty clearly is in the "ears" of the beholder. There's much debate amongst players about virtually every quality of Jazz but everyone seems to agree that the best way to learn jazz guitar is to listen and study with a master.
