GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I wanted to ask you a styles question, (since I mostly just play rock), the question is about Jazz style. This has much to do with my uncle because he keeps saying I should learn to play jazz. Since I am a long-time subscriber to you, & Your explanations are always so clear. I thought that you'd be the best person to describe to me what the heck jazz actually is. Jack -- Toronto, Canada A: I think the reason why your uncle is likely going on at you about studying jazz music is because any study, or even discussion of Jazz will relate quite immediately to the musical process known of as improvisation. Musical improvisation also sometimes called spontaneous composition has not only long been a core element of musical performance, but it's also a core element of Jazz music. Learning jazz, will help you improvise and ultimately play better. Not many people are aware of the fact that musical masters such as; Mozart, Handel, Bach, and Beethoven just to name a few, had extraordinary improvisation ability. They could spontaneously create wild musical passages using; scales, arpeggios and difficult technical challenges not unlike the dazzling display's of modern guitar virtuoso's of today! The complete lesson article for this video will be ...

Video Review - Ritter Princess Isabella Jazz Guitar

www.premierguitar.com PG's Pat Smith walks us through his latest review in the June 2010 issue of Premier Guitar -- the Ritter Instruments Princess Isabella Baritone Jazz Guitar. The Isabella is Jens Ritter's (renowned bass luthier) take on building a hollowbody-style guitar but with a solid body construction. It also uniquely thin as it only measures 1" thick. Also, it has a very different bridge design which Ritter describes as "the hand cast bridge foot is mounted into a small hollowed area carved into the body that exactly matches the contour of the bridge foot. The bridge foot is held in place by a friction setting and only makes contact with a 2mm thin elliptical contour ridge along the hollow area. Thus, most of the surface area on the interior side of the bridge foot and the bridge studs float in the hollow area." The body is made from a very light swamp ash, the neck is switenia mahogany and the fingerboard is Bavarian maple. The tuners are Gotohs, the bridge is a Schaller and the pickup is a Haeussel Custom Fat-Jazz. FULL COURSE, TAB, JAM TRACKS: truefire.at More Free Guitar Lessons: bit.ly Join TrueFire for free - www.truefire.com On Twitter - http On Facebook - www.truefire.com Here we see Frank and Andreas jam Minor Swing in the key of A minor. Both Frank and Andreas approaches to harmony and rhythm at the start of this tune typify the Gypsy jazz style plenty of diminished and chromatic phrases bolstered by tight, driving rhythms comprised of sparse yet complex chord voicings. Later in the performance, we hear Andreas introduce more blues-based note choices with Frank following suit with his chord voicings and rhythms. Frank then explores a few blues phrases before the boys break into a classically-themed section, illustrating just how far the Gypsy jazz style can be taken. The piece wraps things up while exploring a more traditional approach.

Here's the deal, the guitarist in my high school jazz band broke his arm snowboarding and I am trying out for the guitar chair. I know my jazz chords not too bad, I can read good enough, but one thing the teacher wants from those auditioning is to play an 8-bar walking bass guitar line. Can you give me the 411 on walking bass lines for the guitar? I know I can do everything else for this audition, but I have no clue how walking bass lines work for guitar. Anything you could offer would be hugely appreciated! You're my favorite YouTube guitar teacher, if anyone can help me -- I figure it's gonna be you! - Pearce, Calgary Alberta Canada A: There are four common methods you can start developing to compose walking bass line guitar progressions. Jazz Improvisation - How To Create Ultra Productive Practice Sessions (http://learnjazzfaster.com)

www.learnjazzfaster.com Visit now to get your free copy of The Monster Jazz Manifesto. How do I know what to practice? That's by far the most common question asked by students of jazz. After all, learning jazz is no small feat. There's a ton that goes into it. There are thousands of books, articles, lessons, DVDs and websites dedicated to learning jazz. Whether you're studying jazz improvisation, jazz theory, jazz guitar or jazz piano, there's just simply a mountain of information to go through. Let's talk about a few ways to make this seemingly difficult decision much easier. Now, there are several things you wanna consider when you're putting together your jazz practice routine. First of all, your present abilities will weigh heavily on these choices. As a general rule you want to make sure that whatever you are practicing is challenging but doable. In other words, success with the practice topic needs to be within the realm of possibility, if you dig. If you are a relative newbie to jazz improvisation you don't want to be working on ridiculously hard tunes like Coltrane's Giant Steps or Count Down, or working on some wacky odd time signatures, or blazing up-tempo jazz piano playing, etc. On the flip side if you're an advanced intermediate player you don't want to be practicing the same stuff like etudes or exercises you've already got nailed. You want to be sure that the material is pushing you out of your comfort zone. But not by too much. Again, challenging but ...

To the best of my knowledge I have correctly transcribed the piece, but I am not 100% sure, but that is not the point of these videos anyway; they are mostly intended to give a look at how a master like Pass would approach such an arrangement.

50 Jazz Guitar Licks You MUST Know - Lick #44: ii-V7 Bop Riffs - Frank Vignola

FULL COURSE, TAB, JAM TRACKS: truefire.at More jazz guitar lessons: bit.ly In this ii-V7 lick we start with a nice melodic statement using an interval jump. Then we follow it up with a scalar pattern that leads into an arpeggio. So, we are utilizing the different techniques we have been learning in other licks. This is a good lick to learn in different keys and positions. It may take a little practice with the slow rhythm track to get this lick under your fingers. The fast tempo is a realistically bright tempo that jazzers play so take the time practice slowly building the speed of your eighth note lines.
