1909 Baker Electric SEE MORE at.... www.jaylenosgarage.com .... Although a crude electric carriage was originally created in Scotland in the late 1830s, the first functional electric car in the United States was produced in 1891. For the next decade, the clean, quiet electric car was the king of the road. In 1899, an electric car broke the vehicular land speed record, and by 1900, there were more electric cars than any other kind in the US, accounting for 38% of the nations car market. Jay still uses his Bakers original Edison batteries. In 1898, the same year that gasoline-powered vehicles first appeared, automotive innovator Walter C. Baker started the Baker Motor Vehicle Company in Cleveland, Ohio to produce his electric cars. His company went on to manufacture more electric vehicles than any other company in history, despite the fact that it ceased production of them in 1916. Baker presented the first ever shaft-driven automobile at the first American auto show at Madison Square Garden, and is said to have sold his first electric car to Thomas Edison, who developed its batteries. Jay still uses his 1909 Bakers original Edison batteries. He just washes them out occasionally and refills them, and they work fine. The essentially maintenance-free Baker Electric was a high coupe with carriage styling, brass fittings and tillers instead of steering wheels. With no cranks, no fumes and no mess, the cars were very appealing to women, and were soon designed and marketed ...

Comedian, talk show host, and noted car collector Jay Leno opened up his Big Dog Garage for the North American debut of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG hosting a select group of automotive journalists to his view priceless automotive, motorcycle and historic transportation collection. The garage itself is about 17000 square feet, sizeable, to say the least, for a private garage, which is enough space to work on about a dozen cars at any one given time. About a quarter of that space is taken up by the machine shop, which includes a massive amount of equipment First and foremost, the garage is not a museum. Jay makes his purchases not as museum pieces, but because he enjoys driving the cars and motorcycles all of them! From Stanley Steamers to Duesenbergs to McLarens, Jay and his collection are fixtures in the Southern California area and can often be spotted out for weekend rides and the occasional breakdown on the side of the road. Stanley Steamers may be fun to drive, but 1906 technology isn't the most reliable in the world. As a whole, the collection spans 100 years of automotive history. The oldest cars are a 1906 Baker electric car and a 1906 Stanley Steamer, while the newest is a 2006 Corvette. The collection also has a number of rare cars, such as a Monteverde, a Bugatti Atlantic, and a turbine motorcycle. But perhaps the most special car in the collection is a 1955 Buick. Jay Leno Reviews the Jaguar C-X75
Jay Leno became the first person outside Jaguar to drive the C-X75 on a public highway, ahead of its North American Debut at the LA Auto Show. Leno, a long-term Jaguar enthusiast, thinks that despite being so cutting edge, it still looks like a Jaguar with certain key features like the detail on the buttress behind the driver's head that is reminiscent of the new XJ or the back end is having hints of E Type and even the D Type. If the car is produced, it will be powered by twin turbines charging four electric motors. The C-X75 will be make its North American Debut on Nov. 17 at 17:45 GMT
