Beautiful Lies (feat. Big Kenny) by Jaron and The Long Road to Love
Available for sale now on iTunes: bit.ly WEEK #6 - "Wednesdays No Longer Suck" Series Please SUBSCRIBE to this youtube channel. Written by: Jaron Lowenstein and Big Kenny Alphin Produced by: Jaron Lowenstein © Jaronwood Records 2011 I had known of Big Kenny long before his Big and Rich days because Evan and I have been singing a song he wrote called "Contemplating" for over a decade, but never had the pleasure of meeting him. About six weeks ago a friend introduced us and it's hard for me to believe I haven't known him for years. He's quickly become a confidant and a mentor to me. We share a passion for music, a love of people and a penchant for good wine. So Big Kenny and I got to talking and I mentioned that I had an idea for a song called "Beautiful Lies." Before I could even finish my sentence he grabbed his guitar and began belting out "Lie to me, oh lie to me..." (the chorus you hear). Not wasting anytime or wanting to stop his flow, I grabbed my guitar and in no time we were midway thru the song. In nearly every songwriting session there is one person who leads and the other person(s) follow and play a more supportive role. Big Kenny was the driver on this one and I love that I have been able to add a piece of his stylings to my performance. All artists are an amalgamation of the artists they love... I'm happy to add some more Big Kenny to my mix. Featuring my boy Jimmy "Flash" Dulin on the drums. Want me to produce a song or album for you? Contact me at ...

Dean's Open Forum - Jaron Lanier, USC Annenberg Innovator In Residence
Sept. 15, 2010: Dean's Open Forum - Jaron Lanier, USC Annenberg's 2010 Innovator In Residence Join Dean Ernest J. Wilson III for a discussion on "Self and reality: Finding clarity in the digital noise" with Jaron Lanier, USC Annenberg's 2010 Innovator in Residence. From Lanier: "We humans have always been able to confuse ourselves by letting the means we use to communicate get ahead of us. We certainly can do this by talking, and don't even get me started about writing. When networked computers came along, media became a nocturnal, hyperactive thing that keeps on chattering even when we aren't listening. It makes up arguments to itself and then expects us to go along with them. It also follows us around everywhere. What are we to do with this peripatetic constant companion?" Lanier, author of "You are not a Gadget: Manifesto" (Knopf, 2010), blogger and columnist, computer scientist, composer and visual artist, currently serves as partner architect at Microsoft Research, which he has been affiliated with since 2006. Time magazine named Lanier one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010, and in 2005 Lanier was selected as one of the world's top 100 public intellectuals by readers of Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines. TEDxSF - Jaron Lanier - You Are Not a Gadget
Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010. His book You Are Not a Gadget was released in early 2010 by Knopf in the USA and Penguin in the UK. He writes and speaks on numerous topics, including high-technology business, the social impact of technological practices, the philosophy of consciousness and information, Internet politics, and the future of humanism. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Discover (where he has been a columnist), The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Harpers Magazine, The Sciences, Wired Magazine (where he was a founding contributing editor), and Scientific American. He has edited special "future" issues of SPIN and Civilization magazines. He is one of the 100 "remarkable people" of the Global Business Network. In 2005 Lanier was selected as one of the top one hundred public intellectuals in the world by readers of Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines. Jaron begins this talk by playing an 8000 year old Laotian instrument called a Can (sp), and asserts that is it the first binary code technology: an orderly row of objects that are either on or off. He moves into his first hand account of his lab's invention of avatars, and where they might be going. He stands by his 30 year prediction that virtual reality will mature in 2020 or 2025. Jaron's wide ranging talk goes into the potential of leveraging the human motor cortex, avatars and virtual reality to explore new equations, and as a great educational ...

Jaron Lanier on Singularity 1 on 1 (part 1)
www.SingularityWeblog.com http Today my guest on Singularity 1 on 1 is Jaron Lanier. Jaron lives in Berkeley, California and, like John Horgan, is one of the better known critics of both Ray Kurzweil and the technological singularity. Unlike many other critics, however, Lanier is neither a technophobe nor a Luddite. In fact, he is known as the father of virtual reality technology. In addition, Jaron has worked on the interface between computer science and medicine, physics, and neuro-science. Most recently he is the author of a manifesto titled You Are Not a Gadget. I thought of asking Jaron for an interview right after I watched a couple of YouTube videos where he argues that the Singularity is a new religion for geeks. Though I certainly disagree with this claim of his, I still think that his book is a great read with a lot of sound arguments about the pitfalls of legacy software backed up by several solid examples. Unfortunately, I have to admit that in my opinion his reasoning during our conversation did not strike me to be as sound as that of his book. This, however, may well be a direct result of my arguably poor questions. Perhaps I somehow failed to lead the conversation in the most productive and constructive manner... Anyway, as always you can listen to or download the audio file above and don't hesitate to let me know what you think!
