Japanese Math Professor Excellent Optical Illusionist

For more news visit ☛english.ntdtv.com Japanese mathematics professor Kokichi Sugihara spends much of his time in a world where up is down and three dimensions are really only two. Professor Sugihara is one of the world's leading exponents of optical illusion, a mathematical art-form that he says could have application in the real world. Three sloped ramps are aligned along three of the four sides of a square. Each ramp appears to be sloped in the same direction but when a marble is placed at one end of the ramp it seems to defy gravity. It's called an "anti-gravity slide". Only when the the entire structure is turned 180 degrees, is the illusion revealed. Japanese mathematics professor Kokichi Sugihara from the Meiji Institute near Tokyo, has made a career of creating optical illusions. He's devised and built more than a hundred of them, like this one called "Perches and a Ring". [Kokichi Sugihara, Meiji University Professor] "Among these models, there are those which are reproductions of optical illusions, and others that seem like normal models, but when you add movement to them, they show movement that should be impossible in real life. This is done by using the same trick, and I call them 'impossible motions'." Professor Sugihara's "impossible motions" have been recognized around the world. He won first prize in an international competition last year with this one, called "Magnet-Like Slopes". Sugihara says the success of his illusions is tied to human perception ...

From www.facebook.com : UPDATE: 1 of the dogs have been located. www.lifewithdogs.tv Emerging coverage from Japan offers a moving example of ultimate dog loyalty, and clearly illustrates the challenges faced by animal victims of the earthquake and tsunami. It has been said that the dogs were picked up after the video was filmed, and are in the care of a local shelter. Updates and pics will be offered at the link above in the coming days, as available. Translation of conversation in video: We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty. He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid. Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead. Where? Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright. The dog is protecting him. Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay. I can't watch this. This is a very difficult to watch. Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive. Yes! Yes! He is alive. He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon. Oh good. He's getting up. It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all. Want to donate ...

The Japanese Naked Festival - The Hadaka Matsuri

ALL BODY HAIR SHAVED!!! Don't forget to rate and comment! --------------------------- I talk more about this festival in a vlog here: www.youtube.com (It's my casual channel: gimmeaflakeman) ------------------------ My brother made this: www.youtube.com (I know he makes better videos than me!) --------------------------- Japanese notes: hadaka=naked matsuri=festival yatai=food stand iidesuyo=go ahead abunai=dangerous otoko=man dame=bad meiwaku=troublesome or "in the way" ------------------------- The small town of Konomiya, part of Inazawa city, just outside Nagoya witnesses one of Japan's most famous hadaka matsuri or naked festivals. The raucous festival dates back to 767 when the local governor of Owari (present-day Aichi Prefecture) instigated the festival in an attempt to ward off a plague epidemic sweeping the country. The festival has a number of stages. On the second day of the lunar new year a post marked with the words "naoi shinji" is set up outside Konomiya Shrine. An hour later at 10am a group of applicants arrive in the hope of being chosen as that year's shin-otoko or ("god-man"). To be selected as shin-otoko is considered a great honor, though a dubious one in most people's eyes in view of what is to follow. A huge 4-ton rice-cake (mochi) is prepared and is presented to the shin-otoko on the eve of the main festival. For three days prior to the start of the matsuri the shin-otoko is kept alone, enclosed in a small hall in Konomiya Shrine. He is fed only ...

Japanese Crystal Ball Performer (Contact Juggling)

This guy was hanging out in Yoyogi park in Harajuku, Tokyo, on a Sunday afternoon. He has clearly practiced a lot! I loved the music he played during his performance. My friends and I were completely mesmerized. He has a very expressive face too, with a charming smile... it really sells the show in the end. Made me feel like a little kid. UPDATE: This video has been up for nearly a year now and I have some information that some of my viewers will appreciate. First, the juggler's name is Okotanpe - and yes he's amazing - one of my favorite memories of Japan! Second, the song that he uses in his final act is called ソレイユ (soreiyu, spelled using katakana, meaning sun, is the Japanese pronunciation of the French word "soleil", also meaning sun). It is sung by Yoshie Nakano 中納良恵. Here's a link to the video: www.youtube.com The beginning of the song is by UA (ううあ) and it comes from an old Japanese folk song: www.youtube.com Here are the traditional lyrics: www.cameraslens.com I don't know exactly what size ball Okotanpe uses in this video (other users have suggested that it is 95mm - 100mm), but you're welcome to ask him. Here's his youtube page: www.youtube.com Also, here's his official webpage: okotanpe.com Here's where you can buy a crystal ball pouch like Pakkun welovegreen.ocnk.net If you're interested in contact juggling, check out this online community: www.contactjuggling.org Hope this info helps! Japanese engineers' fighting spirits in the spacecraft Hayabusa

www.nicovideo.jp I'm so impressed with this Nico Nico Douga video that I translated it in English and posted it on YouTube. The crew of Space Battleship Yamato appears in this video is as follows: Science officer Sanada, Chief navigator Shima, Captain Okita and Ship doctor Sado. Sanada is capable and his ideas frequently save the ship from destruction. "In preparation for the situation like this!" or "I thought something like this might happen!" (Konna koto mo arou kato!) is his famous line in the anime. Reference video: www.youtube.com --------------------------------- English translaton of the authour's comment of the source video on Nico Nico Douga Japanese engineers' geeky power in the spacecraft Hayabusa "In preparation for the situation like this!" It is not an exaggeration to say that JAXA's future predictions about the mission of the spacecraft Hayabusa are at an abnormal level and those predictions have been surprising the world. I made this video from the contents which were roughly brought together, using the crew of Space Battleship Yamato.

JAPAN

Tokyo, a city of 30 million, is a place where traditions and modern inventions live together. From the Tokyo Tower one can see only skyscrapers, palaces made of concrete and glass, multi-level highway junctions and monorail expresses. But under the neon lights there are still rickshaw runners pulling their carts and geishas walking in their wooden shoes. The ornamented pagodas, the Japanese gardens, the calm Shintoist sanctuaries tell us about the age of shoguns and ninjas. The digital cameras and the swords of the samurais can be found at the same store. In the restaurants one can have sushi, sukiyaki and tempura sitting on a tatami, using chopsticks. We can take a look at the masterpieces of ikebana and origami and the pictures painted on rice paper. Travelers can take a trip to the ancient city of Kyoto, to the giant Buddha of Kamakura, to the warm springs and to the Sacred Mountain, Fujiyama, where the cherry trees are blossoming at the foot of the hills.
