Janis and Big Brother and the Holding Company recording Summertime for their Columbia album Cheap Thrills. The album was released in late 1968 and sold over one million copies that year. Shortly after the release of Cheap Thrills, Janis left the band to persue a solo career in music.

I would like to say thank you to the many thousands of viewers that have made this performance my most popular video. At the time when this clip was broadcast in 1992 on Channel 4 (UK) it was thought that this 16mm film recording was the only copy remaining in the archives. Luckily, the original videotapes do exist and these shows can now be bought on DVD. The copyright in these programmes now belong to Tom Jones.

Janis Ian - At Seventeen (Original Stereo)
Janis' musical career got off to a rocky start in 1967 with the recording of a song called "Society's Child" the theme of which involved an inter-racial romance. The recording was banned in several areas and a radio station in Atlanta, Ga. that played it was actually burned down. The song ultimately gained wide acceptance helped along by the person of Leonard Bernstein who included the song in one of his televised specials. "At Seventeen" is a bittersweet song about the cruelties of growing up done from the perspective of someone much older. It was Janis' biggest pop hit peaking at #3 during the summer of 1975. Janis continues to record and perform today.
