Israeli Settlement Expansion Raises West Bank Tensions
After the United Nations' cultural organization UNESCO voted to grant membership to the Palestinians, Israel announced it would accelerate construction of Jewish settlements on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The move drew international outrage. VOA's Scott Bobb reports from Givat Hamatos, a settlement that was already in the scheduling phase.
Israeli settlement building continues
Israel is continuing to build illegal settlements on Palestinian land, despite a 10-month suspension of new construction announced by the government. Peace Now, an Israeli non-governmental organisation, says work is taking place at more than 30 settlements in the occupied West Bank. Nour Odeh reports from Beit Sahour. (February 16, 2010)
Israeli settlements to be determining issue in peace talks
The building of new Israeli settlements on Palestinian territories will be one of the key and determining issues in upcoming peace talks that will be held in the US capital Washington DC. Israel has been criticised by all sides, including the US, for its illegal construction of thousands of homes, which have been separated by an imposing wall. Nour Odeh reports from the Palestinian village of Al-Walajeh in the West Bank, where many are suffering from the unlawful settlements. [August 30, 2010]
Israeli New Settlements-News Analysis-08-12-2011
International condemnation continues to pour in, after Israel announced plans for the construction of thousands of new settlements in Jerusalem Al-Quads. This comes on the heels of a Palestinian plan to seek UN membership at next month's General Assembly. In this edition of the news analysis, we will discuss how this will further affect the already-precarious situation in the Middle East talks, along with the reaction of the international community, and whether a 2 states solution is even a possibility.
Israel's continued settlement expansion
Israel has been expanding illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land for decade, and it is now emerging just how far-reaching this policy is. According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the Jerusalem housing committee is planning to build another 50000 Jewish homes in occupied East Jerusalem to join the hundreds of thousands already there or in progress. That includes 3000 housing units in Gilo, 1500 apartments in Har Homa and another 1500 in the settlement of Pisgat Ze'ev. Thousands more have been planned at Givat Hamatos, and the settlement of Ramot, while hundreds more are in the works in Armon Hanetziv, as well as Neveh Yaakov. Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros reports (12 mar 2010).

"Holy Land" Trailer (5 minute version)
Change has come with stunning speed to the Middle East. Dictators have fallen. Iran looms. And the Palestinians have demanded statehood. But in Israel, the status quo seems entrenched. Netanyahu and his coalition hold sway . The settlements expand. The Israeli military presence in the West Bank continues. It seems that one tectonic plate shifts, while the other remains fixed. An earthquake may very well be at hand — possibly a regional war, or a Third Intifada, or an outright Israeli annexation of occupied territories. "Holy Land" goes to the likely epicenter of this earthquake, the West Bank, where 350000 Israelis live in 120 settlements planted among 1.9 million Palestinians. Palestinians and most of the world declare that settlement expansion is the major obstacle to peace. The Israeli government and the politically powerful settlers regard the settlements as biblical destiny and push forward with their vision of "all of Israel" for the Jews. The film focuses equally on Palestinians and Israelis, with three main characters on each side. They roughly fall into three categories: extremist, moderate, and new generation activist. They are all idealists, currently engaged in stories of struggle, dedicated to making a difference. They are not necessarily do gooders — rather, they are people willing to sacrifice for a cause in which they deeply believe. For more about the film, go to http:www.israeldocumentary.com.
Carter urges halt to Israeli settlement building - 27 Aug 09
Former US President Jimmy Carter says a freeze on Israeli settlements is "absolutely necessary" to achieving peace in the Middle East. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Carter, who is currently visiting Israel as a member of the group known as the 'Elders', spoke about his views on the prospects for Middle East peace. His comments come as Barack Obama, the US president, attempts to seal an Arab-Israeli peace deal that has eluded the region for more than six decades. His administration has already made it clear it opposes the ongoing building of Jewish settlements on Palestinian land occupied since 1967. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been constructed by Israel despite international condemnation and in contravention of international law.

Will Israeli settlement push spur US to tackle the issue?
Israel looks set to carry out plans to build 20 new apartments in East Jerusalem despite reported strong objections from the US. While there is nothing new about Israel's illegal building in the occupied territory nor Washington's stance in opposing it, Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros looks at whether recent events will push the US to finally tackle the thorny issue, or gloss it over for the sake of "proximity talks" and an appearance of progress. Turning Tables: 'Israel illegal occupier if Palestine recognized'
The Israeli Defence Force is reportedly preparing settlers for the mass uprising of Palestinians, expected after the UN votes on a Palestinian statehood in September. The preparations include handing out tear gas and stun grenades to civilians. Military resistance to Palestinians will only bring international sanctions on Israel after Palestine is recognised in September's vote. That's the view of Jeff Halper, a political activist and co-founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

Inside Story-the issue of Israeli settlement - 16 Sep 09
Despite a wave of protests and talks on the issue Israeli settlement construction continues. George Mitchell, the US envoy to the Middle East, met Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister during his latest tour of the region and allthough the meeting was described as "good" by the prime minister's office, there was no deal on the thorny issue of settlements. The US wants Israel to temporarily halt its expansion into Palestinian land, especially in the occupied West Bank. Mitchell and Netanyahu are set to meet again and the special envoy wants to secure an agreement ahead of possible three-way talks between Netanyahu, Barack Obama, the US president and, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president. So, where does that leave President Obama's peace initiative? And is the US willing to force its ally to compromise? Inside Story, with presenter Shiulie Gosh, discusses with guests Raanan Gissen, the former senior advisor to Ariel Sharon, Michael Hudson, a professor of International Relations at Georgetown University and, Azzam Tamimi, the director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought.
Palestinian farmer defies Israeli settlement policy - 3Jun08
Since Annapolis, Israel has issued over 17000 new tenders for housing units in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The Palestinians say this is a policy that destroys any prospect of peace and renders establishing a viable Palestinian state impossible. Israel's Prime Minister is courting new controversy by approving the building of nearly 900 new homes in occupied East Jerusalem. Many Palestinians are fighting to keep their land, and one farmer, Mohamed Elian, in Bethlehem has made it a life-time commitment from his cave. For almost 4 decades, he has lived in a cave in his land in the village of Wad Fukeen to make sure his land is not lost to the expanding Israeli settlement nearby. Al Jazeera's Nour Odeh visited Mohamed Elian and filed this report.

Click here for additional info: www.kinolorber.com An extraordinary work of cinematic and political activism, 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal, first-hand account of non-violent resistance in Bil'in, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching Israeli settlements. Shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, the footage was later given to Israeli co-director Guy Davidi to edit. Structured around the violent destruction of each one of Burnat's cameras, the filmmakers' collaboration follows one family's evolution over five years of village turmoil. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify, and lives are lost. "I feel like the camera protects me," he says, "but it's an illusion."

Rick Santorum Owned on Palestine
What incredible ignorance. If I ever run in politics I am not going to hide from Israel. I will call a spade a spade. Racism and murder are indefensible. Should they give it back what a nutty question. If you didn't come from the collectivist position of racism the solution is quite easy. There is no reason in the world everyone can't just live in the same place as they do in any other secular country. It's doesn't have to be exclusively Jewish or Muslim or whatever. But that would be the adult thing to do and we are dealing with religion so the next best thing is a two state solution which can not even begin until Israel removes every single settlement (racial colony). If you see him in public ask him to autograph a copy on Mein Kampf you don't really need the book just make the cover and put blank paper inside. That would be too funny.
