US veteran questions rationale of Iraq war

The Iraq war officially ended in 2011, nearly nine years after it began. Back in 2003, many US soldiers went to war fully supporting the military effort and their country's stated mission. During almost a decade of war, however, thousands of US troops died in combat - in addition to tens of thousands of Iraqis. Some of those who fought for the US are now questioning whether the war was worth it. Josh Stieber is one such war veteran. He spoke to Al Jazeera about how he now feels about the war.

Leave a note for the troops: my.barackobama.com Sharon Potter is the first female in the state of Nevada to receive a purple heart by way of serving in Iraq. She stands with President Obama because of his continuing fight to ensure that our nation's veterans and military families are taken care of. In Sharon's words: "As veterans we're the ones that sign on the dotted line with our lives and no veteran should have to come home and fight for their benefits."

Ambulances became a common sight as massive plumes of smoke rose above Baghdad. Since US troops have left, almost 20 blasts have rocked the city, in the form of car bomb and other hidden explosives. Jeremy Corbyn, Labour MP and member of the Stop the War Coalition, told RT live from London that those responsible for the recent atrocities in Baghdad are trying to say that the Iraqi government is unable to maintain control. On Thursday, families of victims of the September 11th 2001 attacks won a default judgment against Iran, the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Lebanon-based Hezbollah. Iraq's Secret War Files

In the biggest official files leak in history nearly 400000 Iraq war logs reveal the massive scale of civilian deaths and new torture allegations following an investigation by Channel 4′s Dispatches. Channel 4 News has accessed the data in the classified documents via The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and WikiLeaks. The only TV doc to have advance access to the biggest Wikileaks release ever. This is what really happened during the Iraq war, not what the US PR machine of the time wanted us to believe. The reality behind the civilian death count; al-Qaeda's fictitious presence; torture, torture and more torture. A wall of truth revealing unprecedented levels of unwarranted aggression. Dispatches, Channel 4′s flagship current affairs strand, exposes the full and unreported horror of the Iraqi conflict and its aftermath, revealing the true scale of civilian casualties and allegations that even after the scandal of Abu Ghraib, American soldiers continued to abuse prisoners. And that US forces did not systematically intervene in the torture and murder of detainees by the Iraqi security services. The programme also features previously unreported material of insurgents being killed while trying to surrender. Description cited from: topdocumentaryfilms.com

Pharr mother shares son's heroic tale from Iraq

We often hear the sacrifice of service men and women who die on the front lines while defending this country but we don't always hear the stories of heroic efforts. A Pharr woman wants to share how her son saved the lives of his own friends. "I'm happy, I'm proud of him," Alicia Palacios said of her 30-year-old son Sgt. Fernando Sanchez. Sanchez is a Rio Grande Valley native who returned to his Minnesota home just two weeks ago from his third deployment to Iraq. Last fall, Sanchez escorted the US military out of Iraq serving as a scout. He and his three man crew drove an armored scout truck ahead of the convoy. Their job was to detect any road side bombs so the convoy behind them could travel safely. While many convoys saw danger Palacios shares how her son had two close calls in just one hour. "He said in a couple of minutes, sir make a u-turn quick," Palacios said. "They were going straight to the enemy." While Palacios has not yet seen her son she said she's happy just knowing he is back on American soil. "I was so happy he came home alive," Palacios said. Sanchez currently lives in Minnesota with his wife and children.

Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers 2006

Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers is a 2006 documentary film made by Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films about the ongoing Iraq War and the behavior of companies with no-bid contracts working in Iraq. Specifically, the film claims four major contractors - Blackwater, KBR-Halliburton, CACI and Titan - are over-billing the US government and doing substandard work while endangering the lives of American soldiers and private citizens. The documentary contends these companies are composed of ex-military and ex-government workers who unethically help their companies get and keep enormous contracts and milk the American taxpayer. Halliburton contends the film is "yet another rehash of inaccurate, recycled information." During filming, Greenwald had requested interviews with the contractors, but they turned him down. Seymour Hersh: Propaganda Used Ahead of Iraq War Now Being Reused Over Iran's Nuke Program

www.democracynow.org - While the United States, Britain and Canada are planning to announce a coordinated set of sanctions against Iran's oil and petrochemical industry today, longtime investigative journalist Seymour Hersh questions the growing consensus on Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program. International pressure has been mounting on Iran since the UN International Atomic Energy Agency revealed in a report the "possible military dimensions" to Iran's nuclear activities, citing "credible" evidence that "indicates that Iran has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device." In his latest article for The New Yorker blog, titled "Iran and the IAEA," Hersh argues the recent report is a "political document," not a scientific study, in an interview with Democracy Now! Nov. 21. "They [JSOC] found nothing. Nothing. No evidence of any weaponization," Hersh says. "In other words, no evidence of a facility to build the bomb. They have facilities to enrich, but not separate facilities to build a bomb. This is simply a fact."
