Pat Buchanan: 300 nukes in Israel yet Iran a threat?

Islamic wars have brought questionable benefit to the US over the last 20 years, former US presidential advisor Pat Buchanan, author of Suicide of a Superpower, shared with RT. A new war in the Middle East will be a disaster for the US and for the world economy, he says. "I opposed the Desert Storm operation in 1991 cleaning Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait because, I said, 'This would only be the first Arab-American war.'" Looking at the number of conflicts in the Islam world that America is taking part in now, one cannot but admit that Buchanan was right 20 years ago. "You cannot replicate the Middle West in the Middle East," Pat Buchanan concluded. From the time of the Cold War the US has military bases all over the world. Today, running a budget deficit of 10 per cent of its GDP, America simply cannot afford to continue "to carry this enormous burden, defending 40 or 50 countries around the world," Buchanan says, "We have to bring troops home." Getting rid of these bases essentially means dismantling the American Empire to help the US survive beyond 2025. America's crusade under the banner of ending tyranny in the world is "utterly utopian". RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Impact of US sanctions on Iran's medical imports-Iran Today-05-23-2012

Iran produces 97% of its own medicines. The 3% it doesn't produce comes from abroad, and this is where the problem lies -- these drugs are all related to chronic life threatening diseases. The sanctions do not ban the sale of medicine to Iran, but they do block every financial route needed to obtain drugs for patients that suffer from diseases like diabetes, kidney failure, hemophilia, ms, and leukemia. For these patients the sanctions could be their death sentence. Desferal is a drug keeping thousands of people suffering from thalassemia alive. It has become painfully scarce now, and families are getting increasingly desperate. The government is now busy exploring avenue to get the drugs and put minds at rest, but for the families and victims of chronic diseases, the clock ticks on relentlessly. Leaked UN report blames Iran for supplying Syrian army with weapons

The United Nations is blaming Iran for supplying the Syrian army with weapons. The UN says it has found evidence Iran been organising illegal shipments. Meanwhile, both Russia and the US acknowledge that they are helping the two sides in Syria's internal conflict as well. The implications of this are profound: not only are the two sides on the ground ignoring the terms of the ceasefire, but it also seems that foreign countries - which on paper signed up to the Annan plan and its spirit of demilitarisation - are, in practice and in different ways, both offering supplies which undermine it. Iran would say that makes criticism of it sound a bit hollow. And it also reinforces the idea that Syria has turned into a proxy conflict between Russia on one side, and the self-titled Friends of Syria on the other. Laurence Lee reports.

Geopolitical importance of Persian Gulf-Iran Today-05-15-2012

The Persian Gulf is a body of water with great geo-economic and geopolitical importance. More than 50 percent of the oil produced worldwide comes from this region. The level of a country's influence over this blue expanse can determine that nation's global standing. Major wars have been fought over it, and political wrangling over it is constant. To the north the Persian Gulf is flanked by Iran and to the south by Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and The United Arab Emirates. The regions wealth is divided up between these 8 nations and its security as well. Knowing how important the region is, providing most of the industrial world's life blood, down the ages ships have sailed from the Western world to the Middle-east to muscle in on the region's affairs; Portugal, the Netherlands, France, Britain and now the US. This has caused a lot of tension and controversy over the Persian Gulf. Iran says no foreign presence is welcome or necessary. Possible Nuclear Weapons Research at Iran's Parchin Military Complex: Explosives Chamber Image

An unnamed official from a country tracking Iran's nuclear program has provided the Associated Press with a computer generated image said to show an explosives containment chamber located inside Iran's Parchin military complex. According to experts at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, such a chamber is of the type needed for nuclear arms-related tests. IISS Director for Disarmament Mark Fitzpatrick: "What one does inside such a chamber is conducts high explosives testing. You are going to make something go boom with maybe 70 kilograms of high explosives, you need to contain the explosion. And particularly if you are using uranium, which is reportedly the case, you want to contain all the uranium dust so there's not any tell-tale, observable signals of that experimentation." The official who provided the picture has said it is based on information from a person who had seen the chamber at the Parchin military site. The United Nation's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, has long pressed Iran for access to the site, but so far, this has not been granted. The release of the image comes as IAEA officials prepare to meet their Iranian counterparts for talks in Vienna this week. The discussions will be closely watched by the six world powers -- the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- who will be holding their own negotiations with Iran in Baghdad on May 23rd. Iran has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the chamber depicted in the image, though ...
