Behavioral Economics of Intrinsic Motivation
One of the most basic questions I hear from managers is: How can I do a better job of motivating my team? Should you use a bigger carrot or a sharper stick? In Dan Pink's new book Drive and his latest TED talk he makes the distinction between extrinsic motivators like strict schedules and large bonuses and intrinsic motivators like autonomy, mastery, and purpose. He makes the case that employees performing jobs that require more than just basic cognition, are less productive when motivated by an extrinsic source than an intrinsic source. What I find most interesting about his talk are the behavioral economics behind this management style. To understand the behavioral economics behind intrinsic motivation we must first understand that the call to move to intrinsic motivators is really a call to move the employee-employer interaction from a market relationship to a social relationship. Let's look at these two types of relationships as defined by Dan Ariely in his book "Predictably Irrational". A market relationship is usually defined by the exchange of monetary currency for a product or service. In the employer-employee relationship this has been the structure for motivating people to work throughout the 19th and 20th century. The employee trades her or his time for compensation. How Intrinsic Motivation Differs From Extrinsic Motivation

However, when self-satisfaction is achieved and a general feeling of doing a good job is experienced, the motivation is intrinsic. The activity or job being done is one that interests the person and one they enjoy. Therefore, the motivation is interest and enjoyment. They are not doing it to avoid a negative consequence or for an incentive provided by anyone. This is one of the most satisfying of all life goals. The inner drive that certain people have to perform well and meet challenges is responsible for this motivation. Challenge is essential to many people in the workplace and elsewhere. Students are challenged by certain subjects that are more interesting than others. The goal being focused on is not to make straight A's in this subject. It is to learn everything they can about it; hence, they satisfy their own need. This motivation is totally different than one that has external factors that are considered in the attainment. If, for example, as a manager or supervisor, you have an employee or employees who are self-motivated, this makes your job much easier. This is an employee who does not require constant supervision because they have a genuine interest in what they are doing and they do it well. This is true in a classroom setting as well. In this case, all carriers are created due to thermally or optically excited electrons from the full valence band into the empty conduction band. Thus equal numbers of electrons and holes are present in an intrinsic semiconductor. Electrons and holes flow in opposite directions in an electric field, though they contribute to current in the same direction since they are oppositely charged. Hole current and electron current are not necessarily equal in an intrinsic semiconductor, however, because electrons and holes have different effective masses (crystalline analogues to free inertial masses). The concentration of carriers is strongly dependent on the temperature. At low temperatures, the valence band is completely full making the material an insulator. Increasing the temperature leads to an increase in the number of carriers and a corresponding increase in conductivity. This characteristic shown by intrinsic semiconductor is different from the behavior of most metals, which tend to become less conductive at higher temperatures due to increased phonon scattering. An extrinsic semiconductor is one that has been doped with impurities to modify the number and type of free charge carriers.

For us, we've defined the life as the next ten years. This way, we can discount that cash by the 10 year federal note. Since these numbers need to be estimated, it's very important to ensure that Warren Buffett's third rule (a stock must be stable and understandable) is met. When a company doesn't have a history of linear growth, estimating the cash that they will produce for the next ten years becomes more speculative. When we look at the root of the intrinsic value calculator, it operates off of the same principals as a bond calculator. Instead of using coupons, we substitute dividends.
