Interfacial Tension

This video shows how interfacial tension is measured using DROPimage Advanced Software. The drop phase is an oil. The external phase is water. The solid phase is stainless steel (needle). We show how simple it is to create an experiment which takes 10 measurements 5 times per second. This type of experiment requires a ramé-hart Model 250 or 500 Goniometer / Tensiometer.

Interface Response Functions

There are many processes which can limit the motion of an interface. For example, the diffusion of solute ahead of the interface, the transfer of atoms across the interface, etc. The functions describing each of these is known as an interface response function, which relates interfacial velocity to the free energy dissipated in that particular process. The contents should be of interest to scientists involved with the theory and practice of phase transformations. This is a lecture on the subject by Professor HKDH Bhadeshia, University of Cambridge. Dynamic crack deflection and branching around an interface

A mode-I incident crack (like a small butterfly) approached the interface (an inclined thin line---interfacial angle 60 degrees). It deflected at the interface and formed a mixed-mode interfacial crack. This mixed-mode interfacial crack then kinked from the interface and branched into many mode-I cracks (similar to a beautiful dragonfly)--© Dr. LR Xu(Vanderbilt University) and Dr. AJ Rosakis(California Institute of Technology)

Interfacial Violence: The Big Stir

This experiment uses ink to represent matter in the universe and demonstrates a "Big Stir" event that expels matter into the universe. The matter is initially contained within the minimal surface energy shape provide by the sphere. When a catastrophic event occurs to break the interfacial surface, an aperture allows flow of the trapped matter (dark matter?) to the vacuum of space. The matter interacts to form galaxies that coalesce based on their gravitational attraction. In this experiment, the ink drops slowly arrange themselves into larger clusters and massive objects because of the interaction of surface potential between drops at a distance(ie minimization of the interfacial surface energy). This may be preposterous but it is still worthwhile to visualize academically...the more you replay it, the more you see the complexity....check out videophysics.com

Nylon Rope Trick

This is a demonstration of an interfacial polymerization reaction. One reagent is dissolved in the aqueous phase (on the bottom) and the other in the organic phase on the top. The reagents diffuse to the interface to form a polymer film. As the film is lifted from the interface, more reagent molecules diffuse to the interface, and regenerate the film.

Faraday instability in a miscible interface

Authors: William Batson, Farzam Zoueshtiagh, Sakir Amiroudine, Ranga Narayanan, "Immiscible interface vs. miscible interface in Faraday instability," ArXiv, 14 Oct 2010: arxiv.org The video depicts the dynamics of a Faraday instability for both a miscible and an immiscible interface. The instability occurs when the system is subject to vibrations of sufficient amplitude at a given frequency. If the amplitude exceeds a critical value, a deflection of the interface appears and grows in time. In the miscible case presented here, water is carefully placed on top of brine and is shaken at a frequency of 3 hz with an amplitude of 40 mm. With surface tension absent, the instability is driven by the density difference of the two phases. In the immiscible case, a 10 cSt silicone oil is placed on top of a uorinated compound called FC 70, and is shaken at a frequency of 7 hz and an amplitude of 3 mm. While the inclusion of surface tension can help stabilize the deflection to a steady, standing wave pattern, this video shows the shaking can still be violent enough to induce mixing.

Lagrangian Vortex Sheets for Animating Fluids, SIGGRAPH 2012 Paper

Tobias Pfaff, Nils Thuerey, and Markus Gross Buoyant turbulent smoke plumes with a sharp smoke-air interface, such as volcanic plumes, are notoriously hard to simulate. The surface clearly shows small-scale turbulent structures which are costly to resolve. In addition, the turbulence onset is directly visible at the interface, and is not captured by commonly used turbulence models. We present a novel approach that employs a triangle mesh as a high-resolution surface representation combined with a coarse Eulerian solver. On the mesh, we solve the interfacial vortex sheet equations, which allows us to accurately simulate buoyancy induced turbulence. For complex boundary conditions we propose an orthogonal turbulence model that handles vortices caused by obstacle interaction. In addition, we demonstrate a re-sampling scheme to remove surfaces that are hidden inside the bulk volume. In this way we are able to achieve highly detailed simulations of turbulent plumes efficiently.

Nylon 6,10

The preparation of nylon 6,10 by an interfacial polycondensation reaction is demonstrated. The monomers are a 6-carbons diamine (hexamethylenediamine) and a 10-carbons diacid dichloride (sebacoyl chloride): the two reagents dissolved in separate phases polymerize at the interface. The rinsed thread of nylon thus obtained is very similar to the raw material prepared on industrial scale.

Dynamic evolution of gently deposited silicone oil on a solid substrate

This video shows the spreading of a silicone droplet deposited on a solid, conducting and grounded substrate in the presence of corona discharge. The corona discharge was established between a 15g hypodermic needle spaced 40 mm from a mirror finished stainless steel isothermal substrate. The initial size of the oil droplet was 3.78 mm. The silicone droplet is gently deposited on the surface. The oil droplet spreads over the substrate due to its own weight. The typical spreading diameter 30 seconds after deposition appears in the first frame was measured to be 16.4 30 seconds after droplet deposition, a step DC voltage is applied, which generates electric corona discharge, and the dynamic droplet evolution is recorded at the rate of 30 fps using a digital camera (SONY DCR-SX43). After applying the high voltage of 15 kV, it takes less than 100 milliseconds to accumulate the required surface charge on the interface for the evolution process to start. At the initial stage of the evolution (t less than 200 ms), the interface is flattened and the equilibrium contact angle increases to the advancing contact angle, while the position of contact line remains unchanged. For t greater than 400 ms, the spreading process is initiated and radial axisymmetric spreading occurs. At the beginning of the spreading process (t less than 5 sec), the contact line velocity is remarkably high (in the order of 10mm/s), but decreases by about two orders of magnitude with the elapsed time. As an ...

Crude Oil - Boil Over Explosion

A typical boilover process can be divided into three phases, ie a quasi-steady period, premonitory period and boilover period. Boilover is generally considered as one of the most important factors leading to the occurrence of boilover. Experimental examinations have demonstrated that boilover only happens after the fuel/water interfacial temperature has reached the boiling point of water, and that it was the violent seething of water at the interface which brought about boilover. The emission of micro-explosion noise, one of the most prominent premonitory phenomena of boilover has been examined in detail and found to be a result of the water boiling. The investigation on the premonitory micro-explosion noise of boilover illustrated that it is a possible means for early and remote detection of the occurrence of boilover in liquid pool fires. However, in a real fire situation, the micro-explosion is always contaminated by the environmental noise. Hence, pattern recognition techniques should be used to differentiate the micro-explosion noise from the unwanted background noise, and a predictive model should be used to evaluate the status of oil burning and predict the occurrence of boilover. A set of noise features and a practical model have been presented for these purposes.

Silicone oil droplet response at below and onset of the corona discharge

This video shows the behaviour of a silicone oil droplet at different applied voltages. By increasing the applied voltage from 0 to 9 kV, no recordable change in interface or contact line position is observed. Following a slight increase in the applied voltage to 9.2 kV, the corona discharge is initiated and corona current less than 1 µA was detected. The droplet interface is flattened and the equilibrium contact angle changes to the advancing contact angle after 700 ms elapsed time. Since the ion injection strength at the onset of corona discharge is significantly weaker than that at 15 kV, the required charge accumulation time for changing the contact line position is almost twice as long. As it is expected, at the onset of corona discharge, the contact line velocity is smaller than that at 15 kV applied voltage due to the weaker ion injection. This observation confirms that the corona discharge is responsible for spreading process. This research was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A in the paper: Spreading of a dielectric droplet through an interfacial electric pressure by Seyed Reza Mahmoudi, Kazimierz Adamiak and GS Peter Castle. Discovery in 'pop' science reveals the elegant, complex way bubbles burst

Full story: www.labspaces.net This is the original movie of the bubble dynamics shown in Fig. 1E-G. The interfacial bubble ruptures, uncovering a dimple on the water surface. The high curvature of this dimple causes a jet to form; since this jet does not have enough kinetic energy to be propelled into the atmosphere it returns to the interface. Yet, around the jet, there is a ring of smaller bubbles formed during the film retraction. Test: Marker Level Set

A not-so-interesting implementation of MLS-2 [1]. (I will probably have to tune some parameters.) Early tests seem to show that only one reinitialization iteration is required every 3 (possibly more) time steps. Note the reinitialization is applied only in a tubular neighborhood near the interface. The level set itself is moved using semi-Lagrangian advection, the particles are moved using second-order Runge-Kutta and a fast PDE-based reinitialization [2]. This first version runs in the CPU. The Zalesak's disk is defined by a radius of 60, slot width of 20 and slot height of 100. The grid size is 256 x 256. Similar (read: better) tests can be found in Enright's PhD thesis [3], which is illustrative and easy to read.
