Interaction Design at California College of the Arts

Interaction design is one of the most important new careers! It is about creating meaningful and innovative designed experiences in the realms of work, lifestyle, and play. At California College of the Arts we are educating the next generation of interaction designers who will create the next wave of innovation. The Interaction Design Program introduces students to a deep understanding of people in order to envision and create real-world solutions and opportunities for human interactions—with, without, or mediated by technologies. Based on an experiential studio approach, the curriculum is human-centered, multidisciplinary, and collaborative. Faculty members emphasize craft and a creative, hands-on approach to invention, while giving students a combination of visual and systemic design skills. Students learn to design interactive objects, systems, games, services, and environments. Our students build an independent perspective on interactive experiences in order to make positive, lifelong contributions in the world. Directed, photographed, and edited by Byrd Mcdonald. Pillow Talk - An Interaction Design Project

Pillow Talk is a project aiming to network long distance lovers. Each lover has a pillow and a chest sensor which they wear to bed at night. Their chest sensor wirelessly transmits and communicates with the other persons pillow. When each person goes to bed, their lovers pillow begins to glow softly to indicate their presence. Placing your head on the pillow allows you to hear the real-time heartbeat of your lover. The result is an intimate interaction between two lovers, regardless of the distance between them.

Partridge on interaction design

Alan illustrates a hierarchy of alerts within the dashboard/fascia control system of the Rover 200. The scene is the Linton Travel Tavern car-park. Alan is completely bored and has called Lynn into the car for some 'paid conversation'. He's further exasperated as he doesn't know why his Rover make an alarm noise when he turns the key in the ignition. For the last ten minutes, he's been exploring the possible reasons for the alarm. Lynn's suggestions serve only to force Alan to explain a few things about in-car control systems ... Part of this post: www.cityofsound.com

Stephen Anderson's Seductive Interaction Design

For more on this seminar, visit: www.uie.com More and more, we're seeing web sites use rewards systems, competitions, and fun progress indicators to get people engaged. Interactions such as these trigger different elements of human behavior, and encourage your visitors to engage with your web site more. They differentiate the casual glance from a longer involvement with your site. What simple things can you do to increase engagement? Is there a place for fun in business sites? What are some of the ideas from psychology that apply to design? A while back, LinkedIn experimented with a feature: a little meter above the user's information, showing their profile's "percentage completed." Suddenly, more users filled out their profiles. The feature didn't have a clever interface, a sophisticated information architecture, or show any technical prowess. It just leveraged basic human psychology. Seductive interactions take us to a new level in design. They leverage the latest advancements in social science, psychology, and behavioral economics.

Source Engine- Interaction Design/Game Design application- HTW Berlin

This is an application video for the university of applied science and technology at Berlin. We had to make something with the topic "Tunnel". So I made a map with my own textures and without any models with the Source engine. I didn't use any content from the original game (Half life 2, Portal, Css, etc.) and made over 100 textures on my own. I was accepted and currently studing in Berlin ;) Sorry for the bad quality, had some problems with uploading this video.

Acoustic Poetry - An Interaction Design Project

Acoustic Poetry is a conceptual object through which profoundly deaf individuals can explore soundscapes in everyday situations or special occasions. This is to enrich the connection with their environment, a rare intention in medical sound awareness devices. Acoustic poetry seeks to spark a conversation about how designing for deaf culture could be more exploratory and emotional. When the individual feels curious about a particular situation, they can use the object to broadcast an audio sample of the environment to a human interpreter. After listening in, the interpreter crafts a profound, poetic description of the soundscape, which is then sent back and displayed on the object.

A Design Study of Direct-Touch Interaction for Exploratory 3D Scientific Visualization

We present an interaction design study of several non-overlapping direct-touch interaction widgets, postures, and bi-manual techniques to support the needs of scientists who are exploring a dataset. The final interaction design supports navigation/zoom, cutting plane interaction, a drilling exploration, the placement of seed particles in 3D space, and the exploration of temporal data evolution. To ground our design, we conducted a requirements analysis and used a participatory design approach throughout development. We chose simulations in the field of fluid mechanics as our example domain and, in the paper, discuss our choice of techniques, their adaptation to our target domain, and discuss how they facilitate the necessary combination of visualization control and data exploration. We evaluated our resulting interactive data exploration system with seven fluid mechanics experts and report on their qualitative feedback. While we use flow visualization as our application domain, the developed techniques were designed with generalizability in mind and we discuss several implications of our work on further development of direct-touch data exploration techniques for scientific visualization in general. RACE! Interaction Design Workshop SUPSI

5-6-7 May 2010 Race! Mixed reality environment / Site specific installation Andreas Gysin / www.gysin-vanetti.com How video games would look like if the screen onto we watch them were walls, stairs and rooms? The workshop Race! will focus on the design and the realization of prototypes of video games based on a mix of physical real-world environments and virtual computer-generated ones: the space becomes a platform for the development of new landscapes and ways of game interaction. Goals The workshop aims at conceiving and realizing a prototype of game through the use of architectural mapping projections and interactive systems based on the software Processing. Participants will first learn how to manage traditional input devices (ie joystick, mouse, keyboard, and microphone) in order to develop a video game based on the format of racing games. In a second phase, a new video game of different typology and concept will be developed, focusing on the design of modalities of interaction and on the visual output according to the features of the available spaces. Lightrail "Moving with Interactive Design" 1 (HD)

[www.luminoux.com] The "Moving with Interactive Design" video of the Lightrail, in which Dutch dancer & Laban/Bartenieff movement analyst Roos van Berkel improvises while interacting with the behavior of the Lightrail. ----------------------------- From April 09 till June 09 , three designers visited the University of California in San Diego to collaborate in a design project. Frank de Jong, Pakwing Man & Eric Toering worked with professor David Kirsh and students from the cognitive science department to develop an interactive installation based upon the work of world famous dance choreographer Wayne McGregor. The result is a self made installation that focusses on experience instead of functionality. By using exclusive video material as input, the installation tries to show visitors the complexity of the dance piece by using an accessible interaction. People can use their whole body to touch the Lightrail and play with light that runs through the tubes. The installation was placed in the Sadlers Wells theater in London (United Kingdom) from 13 to 17 October 09 during the world premiere of Wayne McGregors new dance piece. About 8000 people were present during this prestigious event. ----------------------------- Camera & Editing: Frank de Jong Music: Apparat - You Don't Know Me

Unity Interactive Design Project

The Unity Interactive Design Project was developed by University of Sydney Masters of Interaction Design Students. The goal of the project was to better understand different cultures and nationalities through the use of an interactive gaming experience. It combined a well thought out concept, implementation and building of a round gaming table that showed different symbols that flashed and displayed on the screen. Users picked a country of their choice and had a set time to recognize the symbol(s) and touch it on the screen, The players who recognized and touched the particular symbol (s) in the set amount of time gathered points. The user who had the most points gathered at the end of the time period won the game. Although it was a game, the object was really to learn more about different countries and cultures and hopefully be able to break down some social stereotypes through interaction and discussion about the what the symbols may represent. www.conceptualdesigngroup.net David Garcia Copyright 2009
