Message in a Bottle
Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, Message In A Bottle stars Robin Wright Penn as Theresa Osborne, a writer for the Chicago Tribune. While her son visits her cheating ex-husband, Theresa goes on a vacation by herself. One day, while running on the beach, she finds a bottle washed up on the shore. She opens it and inside finds a love letter unlike any she's ever read. Captivated by the author's words of love, she returns to her job at the Tribune where she convinces her boss to run an article about the mystery writer, known only as "G." He approves, and Theresa begins her hunt. Balloon Inside a Bottle
An experiment for Physics 101. Boil 1TBSP of water inside a glass bottle. (The stove works best). Boil the water until it is almost gone. The water evaporates into the bottle, creating steam. Once the water is almost all evaporated, take the bottle off the stove and place onto a dry surface. (Remember to wear oven mitts!). Quickly place a balloon on top of the bottle neck. And watch it get sucked in!

Ever seen cool lamps made from bottles? You might have wondered how to do it yourself. Well, it's easier than you think! Instructions: 1. Pick the bottle you want to use (This is half the fun). Creating Hell in a Pop Bottle
Hydrogen Oxygen has an adiabatic flame temperature of about 3000 degrees kelvin, thats about half the temperature of the surface of the Sun. Question is... just for fun, can you put that into a pop bottle! Previously I've shown other fuel air burns, one similar to that used in most internal combustion engines (butane air), and the other as one of the more common rocket fuels (hydrogen oxygen). Both release lots of energy when they burn, which is of course what makes them suitable as fuels. The hydrogen oxygen burn though is particularly fascinating as it only produces water as an 'exhaust', further it produces very little water! Indeed to fill a bottle with hydrogen and oxygen you only need to turn about 0.5g of water into H2 and O2, and of course when you burn it you only recreate that half gram of water. To make life even more interesting, to actually do the electrolysis I use a 12 volt Li-ion polymer battery, very similar to those used in most laptops today, simply so folk can visualise in a very simple way the energy content in these everyday objects. Indeed the energy content is significantly higher as only a fraction of the energy I draw from this battery actually goes into creating the H2 and O2, while probably the majority goes into heating up the electrolysis solution. Unwise Microwave Experiment
HAZARDOUS PHYSICS DEMO:open flame, sharp edges (SHOW MORE) Beer bottle in a microwave oven. IT MELTS. Blow-torch is required, goggles required, gloves NOT required (but don't touch white hot melted glass.) This demo is for teens and up, same hazards as for power tools. Blow torches and sharp broken glass: not for little kids! Yes, you can safely touch these beer bottles, usually. Microwaves won't heat glass unless it's already melting. Because of boiled water and plasma, that one beer bottle was slightly too warm to comfortably grab with fingers. Notice that the melted wine glass at 3:40 could be touched just fine, even though the top was glowing white hot. Does it harm the oven? Well, that's my original "garage test" oven from 1994 "Unwise Experiments" website, it's still working fine (but with paint a bit burned.) Whenever you see charred spots in your oven ceiling, you know that someone's been making plasma balls again. Very old pre-1970s ovens may have fragile magnetron tubes which won't tolerate an empty oven chamber. Best is to buy a "basement experimentation" oven for $10 at a garage sale. LEVITATE a Glass Bottle with Only a Straw! - Scam School
The Setup: grab two straws and an empty beer bottle. On the straws, mark a "no man's land" of about 2-3 inches in the middle. The Rules: Neither you, nor anything else is allowed to touch anything in this "no man's land" area on either straw. Each independent side of each straw can touch either you (your fingers), or the beer bottle... but no one side can touch both you and the bottle at the same time. The Challenge: Staying within these rules, use the straws to pick up the bottle off the table, carry it over the wall, and land it safely on the other side. A close look at supercritical carbon dioxide CO2
I built a pressure vessel from aluminum and acrylic, and filled it by placing pieces of dry ice inside. The dry ice melts under high pressure, and forms a liquid and gas phase. When the vessel is heated, the CO2 becomes supercritical -- meaning the liquid and gas phases merge together into a new phase that has properties of a gas, but the density of a liquid. Supercritical CO2 is a good solvent, and is used for decaffeinating coffee, dry cleaning clothes, and other situations where avoiding a hydrocarbon solvent is desirable for environmental or health reasons. If you have a suggestion for what I should do with the supercritical CO2, please leave a comment. CO2 can be liquefied in plastic bottle preforms: www.youtube.com It may be important to open the container before all of the solid melts. When there is still some solid CO2 present, the pressure will be close to the triple point. Once the solid completely melts, the pressure will increase quickly to about 750 psi depending on the ambient temp. I really doubt those plastic containers could hold 750 psi. Norwegian TV show Lydverket aired a mini-documentary about the deaths of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) and Paul Gray (SLIPKNOT). During the eight-minute segment, which can be viewed below (with English subtitles), Vinnie Paul Abbott (PANTERA, HELLYEAH) and Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR) spoke openly about how they dealt with the losses of their bandmembers and friends, and in Vinnie's case, his brother. The interviews were conducted on October 30, 2010 before Vinnie and Taylor were due to go on stage at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, England with HELLYEAH and STONE SOUR, respectively. While Taylor used concerts as therapy and as a tribute to Paul Gray, Vinnie Paul said he didn't know if he would ever go on stage again. "I lived inside a bottle of vodka for eight months," the drummer told "Lydverket". Asbjørn Slettemark, who hosts the "Lydverket" show and conducted the interviews, says he was moved by how both Paul and Taylor spoke openly about the tragedies in their lives. A radical new bottle design could spell the end of stuck ketchup forever. A MIT University team came up with LiquiGlide, a 'super-slippery' coating which makes the insides of the bottle so frictionless that the sludgy goo inside just slides out like water. The results are astonishing - and any burger and chips fan out there should prepare to be amazed. MIT PhD candidate Dave Smith and his team of mechanical engineers and nano-technologists at the Varanasi Research Group spent two months devising a solution. Burger fan Smith said: 'We were really interested in - and still are - using this coating for anti-icing, or for preventing clogs that form in oil and gas lines, or for non-wetting applications like, say, on windshields. 'Somehow this sparked the idea of putting it in food bottles - it could be great just for its slippery properties. 'Plus, most of these other applications have a much longer time to market - we realised we could make this coating for bottles that is pretty much ready. I mean, it is ready, as you can see.
