"Thriller" (original upload)

Update: 1/29/01 Video can be viewed worldwide except in Germany. Why "Thriller" ? visit: byronfgarcia.com 1500 plus CPDRC inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Cebu, Philippines at practice! This is not the final routine, and definitely not a punishment! WHY THRILLER? What made me choose Michael Jackson's Thriller for the aerobics routine is that Michael Jackson was a convicted man to the eyes of those who hated him. He would have been in imprisoned had it not been for settlement arrangements, they would say. Still Michael Jackson's frailty as a human being makes him like one of us -- whether one is a prisoner or not. I saw in the lyrics and video of Thriller much of what jail culture is like. Because of the hideous conditions in jails, prisons are like tombs and inmates are like ghoulish creatures. The only difference is that dancers in the MJ Thriller video come with make-up and costumes. The Dancing Inmates come as themselves. People perceived to be evil. The message of the Thriller is a message for all of us. The funk of forty thousand years embedded in the cycle of sin and punishment is a legacy no mere mortal can resist or is capable of resisting. No prison wall can and will stop evil from lurking in the dark. No shackle can stop the beast about to strike. No punitive or brutal treatment is ever too strong to stop creatures crawling in search of blood. Unless we stop breeding demons in jails, gruesome ghouls from every tomb will seal ...

Honduras Prison Fire Kills Hundreds of Inmates

BY CHRISTINE KARSTEN ANCHOR CHRISTINA HARTMAN At least 350 people are feared dead after a fire swept through a prison in Comayagua, Honduras on Tuesday night. KGO reports part of the prison was still burning Wednesday morning — but rescue workers eventually extinguished the flames. Now investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started. Here's KPTV. "Trapped inmates were screaming as the fire swept through the prison, it's in central Honduras. Guards actually had to hunt for the keys to free inmates." And besides dealing with the massive loss of life from the flames — prison officials have another concern. KNXV reports... "About 356 inmates are unaccounted for so where did they go? Well we are told some of them may have died but others may have escaped." This is not the first time Honduras has seen deadly fires in its prison system. Twice before prisoners have perished in similar incidents. The New York Times Reports... "In 2003, a riot in a Honduran prison left 68 dead, 51 of them shot, stabbed, beaten or burned to death by police... But the following year, a fire, believed to have been caused by a short circuit, killed more than 100 prisoners in another overcrowded facility, most of them gang members." Multiple media outlets point out — packed prisons seem to be a trend in Honduras. Sky News reports the prison in Comayagua held around 850 inmates — way over capacity. "Latin American jails are notoriously overcrowded, particularly in the poor Central American ...

Inmates Sneak Picture of Pig Onto Police Decal

BY LAUREN ZIMA Some Vermont police cruisers were gettin' piggy with it thanks to prison inmates -- the police just didn't know it. KATU reports on what inmates at a prison print shop did to decals that went on police cars. "This is what the cow is supposed to look like on the decal, but notice the difference on the new decal. One of the cow's spots is actually a pig -- a derogatory term for police." But the decals might not be so new -- KPTV has details on how long it took police to notice the pig shape. "A trooper just noticed the problem -- nearly four years after the inmates printed them off." The decals made it onto 30 cars. KTTV anchors had a good laugh -- and a bit of a debate, over the decals. (laughter) "It's in the shape of a pig." "That's what they get!" "It took a sharp-eyed officer." "He should get a promotion." "I thought they should've made donuts instead." "That's not right." But The Burlington Free Press spoke with Vermont Corrections Commissioner Andy Palito and Major William Sheets -- executive officer for the Vermont State Police. Neither of them are laughing. "While some people might find humor in the news story, Sheets and Pallito said, it comes at the expense of Vermont taxpayers. Pallito said each decal costs $13. He believes 60 defective decals were manufactured." For those of you reaching for your calculators -- that's $780.

Fresno Jail Inmates Sleeping Outdoors Under Tents?

Jail and prison overcrowding are huge problems for Fresno and the Valley. Police say sometimes they put a crook in, and they get out the same day. The state prison system is under federal order to ease overcrowding. To do that, the state is unloading its inmates into county jails. And Fresno is seeing that in a big way. Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims told KMPH's Anna Laurel, the state told her to expect 69 state prisoners in October. But by the end of the month, it had sent more than twice that number. That means less room for people arrested in Fresno County and more early releases. Phoenix, Arizona doesn't have an overcrowding problem. It has not released an inmate early since 1993, and it's home to the second largest jail population in the country. One of the reasons? Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's "Tent City." When he took office in 1992, the county faced overcrowding problems. That's when he built the tent city jail. In the desert. In downtown Phoenix. Up to 2000 inmates sleep in bunks under canvas tents. So could something like that work in the Central Valley? It was on the ballot three years ago but voters rejected it. To find out how and why it works in Arizona, Anna Laurel traveled 600 miles to the Maricopa County Tent City Jail.

JAIL INMATES BEGIN PROGRAM CLEANING ANIMAL SHELTER CAGES

Sheriff Dart's program puts non-violent inmates to work, saves tax dollars Non-violent inmates from the Cook County Jail have started cleaning cages at the city animal shelter, providing them with work experience and saving city taxpayers thousands of dollars each year, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Monday. The 16 inmates began work Monday at the David R. Lee Animal Center, 2741 S. Western Ave. -- marking the first time jail inmates have been assigned to carry out duties off of the jail compound. Inmates dispensed food and cleaned cages and kennel areas. They are paid $4 a day -- a little less than $1 an hour, but double the rate inmate workers usually receive at the jail. Those selected for the program are serving short sentences for non-violent charges, most for traffic-related offenses. Inmates can use the money they make from working to purchase items through the jail commissary, including snacks and toiletry items. The inmates are searched before they are escorted on a bus to be taken to the nearby animal center and they are supervised by correctional officers the entire time. They are again searched before returning to their jail cells. All inmates wear orange jump suits and conduct the work in the early-morning hours, before the facility is open to the public. Under a contract approved by the Cook County Board of Commissioners and the Chicago City Council, the city will pay the sheriff's office $231059 a year to fund all inmate, officer and ...

The Inmates - The Walk ( 1979 )

The Inmates are a British garage rock/pub rock band, formed after the split up of The Flying Tigers in 1977. In the early 1980s, they had a medium sized international hit with a cover of The Standells' "Dirty Water", and a UK Top 40 hit with "The Walk" "Dirty Water" reached #51 in the United States in January 1980. Around 1981, the lead singer Bill Hurley became ill following a breakdown, and his place was taken for some time by Barrie Masters, who had recently split with Eddie and the Hot Rods. The Inmates continued to record and tour with Masters until he decided to reform the Hot Rods, and Hurley was well enough to return to fronting the Inmates. In 1987, The Inmates recorded Meet The Beatles, a live album of Beatles' cover version songs. It was re-released on CD with bonus cuts including a live version of "Dirty Water". One of The Inmates' songs, "So Much in Love" (written by Jagger/Richards), was covered by The Lonely Boys in the mid 1990s. As of 2007, The Inmates are still working and touring, especially in continental Europe. After thirty years, they still have four of the original five band members, and continue to play both original songs and covers. www.myspace.com freespace.virgin.net
