Improvisation Can Be Taught - Jazz Piano Legend Mulgrew Miller

Pianist extraordinaire Mulgrew Miller discusses the fine art of Jazz improvisation. Mulgrew Miller (born August 13, 1955 in Greenwood, Mississippi) is an American jazz pianist who performs in a number of jazz idioms. He began his career as member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In a childhood filled with early musical experiences, mostly playing gospel music in his church and R&B and blues at dances. Miller was interested in jazz piano, and established a trio in high school that would play at cocktail parties. Miller admits that they did not really know what they were doing and were merely "approaching jazz". Miller is said to have set his mind definitely to becoming a jazz pianist after seeing Oscar Peterson on television. Much of Miller's playing has the same technical prowess so often connected with Peterson. Currently, he maintains a working trio with Ivan Taylor on bass, and Rodney Green on drums. He has released four albums to date with Derrick Hodge (bass) and Karriem Riggins (drums) (both on the label MAXJAZZ): Live At Yoshi's Vol. 1 (2004), Live At Yoshi's Vol. 2 (2005), Live At The Kennedy Center Vol. 1 (2006), and Live At The Kennedy Center Vol. 2 (2007). On May 20, 2006, Miller was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Performing Arts at Lafayette College's 171st Commencement Exercises. Miller currently resides in Easton, Pennsylvania. As of 2006 he is the Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University. He was the Artist in Residence at Lafayette ...

GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q #1). I have my scales down, but my soloing sucks when my friends and I jam on the weekends. I know my keys alright and I have a knowledge about major and minor but I still can't make a good lead. I need help. - Christopher, Hawaii Q #2). I've played guitar for eight years. I know my scales and some techniques, but I just can't use them to improvise a good solo. A lot of things are still too difficult and there is just no progression in my playing. What am I doing wrong? - Leon, Netherlands A: When it comes to guitar improvisation, there are several areas we need to target in order to develop the skill. The first area is; scale & arpeggio knowledge, (however if the scales are only learn't mechanically, then players will still have some difficulty with improvising, as I'm sure both Leon & Christopher will agree). The next point is that of licks and phrasing. In order to solo even a little, you will require some pre-learned licks and lines. Without them, it will be tough to phrase fluently. Finally, (probably the most important element to develop), is that of working on composing melodies. This will develop your ear. This is different from ear training, (which is about recognizing intervals). What I'm talking about is, working with a ...

Dupré Improvising at St Sulpice, Paris

Marcel Dupré improvising on the gregorian theme Veni Creator Spiritus on his instrument in St Sulpice. He clocked up 37 years as titulaire, though this is nothing compared to his teacher Widor, who managed 63 years in the post, leaving when he was 89! It should be noted however, that Dupré was a mere 75 years old when this recording was made :-) The chant Veni Creator Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit Creator) has been attributed to Rabanus Maurus (776-856), it is often used on important occasions, such as a consecration of bishops and ordinations, coronations etc. It is sung to commemorate the feast of Pentecost. This recording was made by Netherlands radio in 1961, and NCRV radio has a substantial archive available free on the web for those that want to visit, www.orgelconcerten.ncrv.nl. I 'borrowed' this one from their broadcast from St Sulpice, which has three other pieces, of which the sublime Franck fantaisie I will post later. Dupré's improvisations were extraordinary, but perhaps a little clinical or academic for some, Vierne was heard to say upon hearing him improvise for the first time, 'That sounded composed!' He could improvise double fugues, toccatas and ricercares at the drop of a hat, and more remarkable, he said he found it rather easy! From what I can gather, this recording demonstrates a typical Dupré offering. There are plenty more rare & interesting recordings to come...

Q #1: I really want to know how to be more clinical in my solos so that they are easier to listen to. - Sam, Cambodia Q #2: My solos seem to always come off as dull and stupid sounding. I just have no concept of making solos up so they sound connected. Can you suggest some kind of guideline for me? - Julian Scarborough, ON. A: I've put together a 3-Part method that breaks down the important points to help players have more success with playing solos! But, first of all, let's look at something here, guitarists that are new to soloing tend to improvise strictly from scales. And, the intervals they select tend to be small. Like MA & MI 2nd's and 3rd's. This tends to be the principle reason why they're playing comes off as dull sounding. Once you can increase your interval range on the fingerboard you'll start noticing your sound changing as well. Paquito & Wdr Big Ba D'rivera - Improvise One

Recorded in 2003, D'Rivera joins forces with the WDR Big Band, WDR Rundfunkorchester Kln and Dutch diva Fay Claassen under the baton of Michael Abene. - Improvise-ONE was recorded in 2003 and showcases Paquito D'Rivera as virtuosic performer and multi-talented composer, as he joins forces with the WDR Big Band, WDR Rundfunkorchester Kln and Dutch diva Fay Claassen under the baton of Michael Abene. The DVD's opening original, simply titled "Chick," reflects D'Rivera's admiration for colleague and fellow Boosey & Hawkes composer, Chick Corea, whom he views as "one of the best North American composers of all time." "Como Un Bolero" (which could be translated as either "Like a Bolero" or "I eat a Bolero") is also featured. This sensual composition stands out on D'Rivera's Funk Tango, the first release of his new label, which garnered him this year his 9th GRAMMY Award""Best Latin Jazz Album."

1/2 Substituting scale modes in bass improvisation

A practical theory lesson on how i approach improvising over a minor 7 chord groove. In jazz, funk and rock, if a solo section consists of a static minor 7 chord, most often the Dorian minor scale is used (1, 2, b3, 4 , 5, 6, b7). The dorian minor scale is built on the 2nd step of the Major scale. In this example the D dorian minor scale is 2nd step (or mode) of the C Major scale - or in other words it IS a C major scale just starting on the 2nd step/degree. So on any given minor7 chord we can improvise a Major scale a whole step below. ie if we play over a Em7 chord , we can play a D Major scale.

Gabriela Montero improvises on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

"La Divina del Piano" improvises on this popular cradle song. After giving a deep and thrilling version of Grieg's Piano Concerto, Gabriela asked the public to give her a theme to improvise on, then a brave lady in the audience inmediately replied "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" Gabriela started playing on a baroque style. But that wasn't all folks, as the classical melody started to dicrease she tossed the piano with a superb melody in which, at least, I detected some reminicenses of brazilian folk music, similar to the music composed by the great Ary Barroso or Zequinha de Abreu. Simply superb. I'm sorry ma questa donna e molto brava. Una prima donna Brava Gabriela!!! Gracias Gabriela, un enorme abrazo y todo mi cariño desde Caracas. Taken from a live performance at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on September 3rd, 2008. (Live broadcast - Australian ABC Classic FM)

HOW TO IMPROVISE ON HARMONICA ! - Lesson 4 - BAJAN PIEDPIPER

Learn to play harmonica. MUSIC 099 We are heading towards playing Blues! So let's begin with a bit of BLUES HISTORY. Blues is the most important musical form in Jazz and Jazz-related music. It's even heard in Gospel and other genres. The Blues started in the 19th century as a form of folk music developed by the black slaves in the United States. Originally blues were very loosely structured songs performed by individual singers, guitarists and banjo players. The lyrics were usually sad and dealt with every day issues of slave life. When the blues spread from the country side to urban centers, their content included more happy aspects. By 1920 three distinct blues formats had developed: the 8 bar blues, the 12 bar blues and the 16 bar blues. From these three the 12 bar blues quickly became the most popular form. It is still the most common blues form used by contemporary musicians. (The above is compliments Michael Furstner) ... Now as soon as we begin to talk BLUES we get to the area called improvisation! WHAT IS IMPROVISATION? Improvisation is the art of creating music spontaneously, with the player inventing as s/he plays. This results in the instant creation of new melodies. An improvisation can be many bars long or it may be only a bar or two. We can call short improvisations of a bar or two ~ riffs. WHAT IS A RIFF? In Blues terminology a riff is a short motif or phrase which is repeated several times. Riffs can be learned before hand or invented on the spur of the ...

Patriot Act 2/3

Patriot Act 2/3

How To Improvise On The Clarinet

Most horn players do not know how to ad lib or improvise. I am taking a clarinet and showing the rudiments of improvising. You have to know what key signature the song is in. Then you have to transpose your improvised part to a key signature that will audibly match the key signature of the song. A Bb instrument such as the clarinet or trumpet would have to transpose one full step UP to match the tonality of a piano or a guitar which are C instruments. The next important thing to know are the SCALES. You have to know your scales to improvise. If I am playing in the key of C major with the clarinet then most of the improvising I will be doing will be from the notes in a C major scale, ordinary chromatic scale, and the blues scale in C major. Not only do you need to know your scales, but you also have to know your chords: major chords and minor chords. Horn players have a hard time grasping chords because they play one note at a time. However, accordion players, piano players, and guitar players have a full understanding of chords. The horn player needs to know how to play each individual note of the chord. Next, the horn player needs to be able to play chord patterns. Start doing all of the following for the key of C major: scales, chords, and chord patterns. Once you master the Key of C major, all the other key signatures will fall into place.
