Shocking Video Shows Mexican Immigrant Beaten to Death By US Border Patrol Agents. 1 of 2

DemocracyNow.org - A new PBS documentary exposes the tasing and beating death of a Mexican immigrant by US border agents in California, and has renewed scrutiny of what critics call a culture of impunity. In May 2010, 32-year-old Anastasio Hernández Rojas was caught trying to enter the United States from Mexico near San Diego. He had previously lived in the United States for 25 years and was the father of five US-born children. But instead of deportation, Hernández Rojas' detention ended in his death. A number of border officers were seen beating him, before one tasered him at least five times. During the incident, he was handcuffed and hogtied. He died shortly afterward. The agents say they confronted Hernández Rojas because he became hostile and resisted arrest. But previously undisclosed videos recorded by eyewitnesses on their cell phones show a different story. The footage was obtained by reporter John Carlos Frey and aired in a national television special last Friday night, as part of a joint investigation by the PBS broadcast ,"Need to Know," and the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute. Frey joins us to discuss the exposé, along with Hernández Rojas' widow, María Puga, and translator, Christian Ramírez. ILLEGAL Immigrants Receive $Billions Yearly via IRS Loophole INCOME TAX FRAUD

Fraud is rampant nationwide NBC Eyewitness News 13 in Indiana — yes, Indiana -- shows a massive IRS tax loophole which provides over $4 billion per year in tax credits to millions of illegal aliens. In many cases recipients of American taxpayers' misused monies have never set foot in the United States. Indiana is approximately 1700 miles northeast of the Mexican border. A device known as the Additional Child Tax Credit is being used to pay for children living in Mexico — who have never lived here. One thief admitted through an interpreter that his address is being used to file tax returns for numerous children, including multiple nieces and nephews. "If the opportunity is there and they give it [to him] why not take advantage of it?" he asked in Spanish. As a stunning example, thousands in tax credits have been awarded to an illegal alien who claimed 20 children live in a single trailer, that actually housed just one little girl. The IRS is aware of the magnitude of this fraud yet has done nothing to rectify it. In fact, this is the IRS website giving ten tips on how to apply. The application forms are easily downloadable. Watch this shocking exposé put together by News 13 investigative reporter Bob Segall. He spent three months looking into this outrage. Arizona's Immigration Law Heads to the Supreme Court

"As long as there is not a direct conflict, which the federal government did not do a very good job of pointing to today, the Arizona law gets to stand under the Preemption Doctrine," says Reason's Damon Root, who was at the Supreme Court during Wednesday's oral arguments surrounding Arizona's controversial immigration law. "The federal government is saying that 'we have the power to stomp out all of the state experiments in immigration law enforcement.'" Much like the Health Care arguments before the Court in March, Root does not see this as a good day for the Obama administration, in part due to Solicitor General Donald Verrilli's poor performance. "At one point," Root explains "Justice Sotomayor interrupted [Verrilli] and said "look I am terribly confused by what you are saying." Runs about 3.50 minutes. Produced by Meredith Bragg. Components of Immigration System Seeing Bipartisan Agreement

You might think, in an election year in which immigration will be a political football, that there couldn't possibly be bipartisan agreement on fixing any part of the current immigration system. You would be wrong. There is one area—expanding the number of visas given to highly skilled foreigners, particularly those who learned math and science at American universities—where two senators have found a lot of bipartisan agreement. And a whole lot of business--community support to boot. But that doesn't mean anything actually will happen this year. And therein lies a sad tale of Washington's dysfunction.

Praying for immigration reform

Heartache filled their stories. Thursday, men and women told members of different religions the troubles of being an illegal immigrant. "Please help us," cried one illegal immigrant. Her plea was one of several made at the 2nd Annual Interfaith Convocation on Immigration Reform. Illegal immigrants said their reasons for breaking the law stem from a need to escape violence and poverty in their native countries. Several churches accept these reasons. At the First United Methodist Church in McAllen, members of Lutheran, Catholic, Methodist, Episcopal and Presbyterian churches prayed for immigration reform. They taught about how it can be achieved. One woman told Action 4 News she attended for the sake of her oldest son. She said he's an illegal immigrant and about to graduate high school in the US. She wanted to know if he can get any help with citizenship because he's a student. UTPA President Dr. Robert Nelsen said he believes students deserve more rights. "Those kids don't have a future, unless we pass the DREAM Act, not unless we do the right thing," said Nelsen. "They came over here with their parents. It was not their choice. They're some of the brightest, best students I have." Some statistics state illegal immigration cost US taxpayers $113 billion in 2010. Church leaders contest it's not about the cost but about the human left with little choice but to try and make it in the US. Churches across the Valley are offering classes to answer any questions one may have ...

The bodies are piling up in what some rights groups are calling a humanitarian crisis. Despite a decrease in the number of people crossing the border into the US, the migrant death rate keeps climbing, but these unidentified victims are rarely mentioned during US immigration policy discussions. The migrant deaths near the border in the past 15 years are about the same as the US casualties in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Immigrants told 'Welcome to Hell' at Edinburg stash house

.More information has been revealed about the 115 immigrants found in an Edinburg Stash House on Wednesday. According to court records, "Welcome to Hell" is the greeting dozens of undocumented immigrants heard when they arrived into the US Those same court records stated that the greeting wasn't far from the truth. $500 a week is much Marcial Salas claimed he was making to smuggle in and hide dozens of illegal immigrants. Court documents show that Salas admitted to locking the immigrants in a stash house located down a dirt road off of University Drive in Edinburg, despite the rising heat, to keep them from escaping. The immigrants were given very little food, almost no water and some even reached the point of dehydration. Desperation took over for one immigrant who finally found the courage to dial 911. Knowing that meant he would be heading right back to the country he tried escaping. "They're stuck inside these homes for days at a time in crowded situations," said Border Patrol Agent Rosalinda Huey. "Sometimes there is only one bathroom for 60 people. They are placed in very horrible conditions." Huey said they don't keep statistics on the number of 911 calls made by immigrants who might be lost in the brush or being held against their will, but said the calls are frequent. "We've seen where people start fearing for their lives that they might not get release," said Huey. "They're getting sick or they can longer stay in those homes---so they will dial 911 for help.
