The design is just so simple and yet the illusion is so amazing. This illusion has been around for a long time but always in the form of an image. It was created by MIT professor Edward H. Adelson. I wanted to take it from a flat piece of paper and turn it into a real, life sized illusion that I could interact with to demonstrate the effect. The illusion works because of the "shadow" that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesnt exist, you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow. So if you ...

I've had this illusion in my head for months but just never got around to doing it. It was the hardest illusion I've created so far. I couldn't have done it without the help of dxdutch. The top parts of the radio were the easiest to work on. All we had to do was spread the tape semi-evenly. When viewed from a low angle is basically looks like a solid piece. The closer we got to the bottom of the radio, the more difficult it became. Even a small 1 inch by 1 inch piece could take 20 minutes to work on. There were several points during the creation of the illusion that I was ready to give up. I did a few test shots when the radio was half finished and it just didnt seem to be working. But we kept going and we were pretty happy with ...

This device creates the illusion that a simple stream of water droplets can defy the known laws of physics. By controlling a set of flickering LEDs, the dripping water can appear to slow down, freeze in mid-air, and even reverse in direction. This illusion exists because the brain attempts to fill in the gaps between flashes with its anticipated motion. It is the same reason that your brain interprets the 24 frames/second of a movie to be in-motion, rather than recognizing the individual still frames . I tape the templates to poster board then cut with a hobby knife. I fold the poster board then use scotch tape to hold them together. The templates are not 100% perfect. So if you build this model, you might have to squish the columns a little or move the pieces a little to get it to look just right. These are my favorite illusions. From one angle everything looks perfectly normally until you see the balls rolling uphill. When you change the angle of the camera you see that the ramps are not as they appeared. They are actually slanting downhill instead of uphill. It's all about the perspective of course. All of the work for the illusion is performed in a 3D program. The process to create these illusions is long and difficult. I basically create the design the way it should appear and then create a duplicate of the design that will be the actual physical copy. I manipulate the duplicate in the 3D program so that the ramps ultimately slant down but still match the original layer of the ramps that are aiming up. Once I've created the ramps that slant down, I flatten the shapes, print them out, cut, fold and tape. The camera must be set up in the same position that the camera ...

The illusion may look complicated but it was really very easy to make. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Details of materials and construction for Infinity Mirror Illusion The sizes and measurements i've provided may not be 100% accurate. Feel free to experiment with your own materials and measurements. I picked up all of the materials in the video from Hobby Lobby ..except for the mirrored tint. 1 - 7" Cardboard lid 1 1/2" height 1 - 9" Cardboard lid 1 1/2" height 1 - 15 bulb LED light strand 1 - 7" diameter mirror 1 - 1' X 1' 1/10" thick plexiglass or real glass (whichever you prefer -- real glass will give a cleaner result) Take the 7" Cardboard lid and mark a spot every 24 degrees on the outside rim halfway between the top and the bottom. That will create 15 marks around the lid for the LED's I used a hand drill to create the holes for the LED's. Make the holes a little smaller than the LED's so that they'll fit snug Push the LED's into the hole. Push them in far enough so that they visible from the inside. Cut the bottom of the lid out. Glue the mirror in the middle of the inside of the 9" lid. Place the 7" ring with LED's into the 9" lid. The small ring should sit directly on top of the mirror. Cut a piece of mirrored window tint and apply it to the plexiglass / glass ...

This is an amazing illusion in which objects appear to roll up hill. Definition of "illusion": something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. This is one of the most difficult illusions I've ever produced. There are similar illusions out there that I based this off of. I had no instructions on how to produce it so I spent weeks thinking about how to create it. The idea is that from one specific angle the objects appear to roll uphill ..but in reality the objects are rolling downhill. I created the illusion by using a 3D program called Lightwave. I first created the ramps the way they appear to be in reality. Then I copied the ramps and pasted them directly over the original. Then I started to change the shapes of the copied ramps with the original foreground ramps as a guide. I could manipulate the background ramps, changing them from uphill to downhill while keeping the alignment of both sets of ramps. After I finished the manipulated ramps ...I flattened the objects ...then printed them out ...cut them ...folded them ...then placed the camera in the original specific angle. It took me over 2 weeks to perfect the process. But I was pleased with the results. I used blacklights mainly to highlight the fluid ..but wasnt really happy with the results. I used software to stabilize the video and smooth out the shakiness which gives it a curious digitally distorted look. The reason it goes in reverse is due to there being a long line for access to the viewing point preventing a continuous one shot recording. This illusion is the result of the science of how the brain interprets imagery. Laser technology was relied upon to project the image of the globe/sphere for its construction. The audio portion of this video is the music of composer Maurice Ravel from the French ballet, "Daphnis et Chloé" first performed in Paris at the Chatêlet theatre (a very short walking distance away from Paris' main city hall). Crazy Moving Square Illusion!
Simple yet amazing illusion. There are 2 sets of lines moving back and forth perpendicularly but when the paper squares are placed on the screen the lines suddenly appear to be a square moving in a circular motion. Strange Illusion
