Mysterious Illness Hits New York Kids, Covered Up By HIPPA Privacy Rule 2012
A parent of a Le Roy student who developed tic-like symptoms said his daughter was told she suffers from Conversion Disorder. Don Miller said his daughter's doctor diagnosed her with the disorder. Conversion Disorder is defined as a neurological disorder that can be brought on by stress with symptoms that include numbness, paralysis, and inability to speak. The New York State Department of Health says since September, 12 girls in Le Roy suddenly developed tics. Some are so bad, they had to be pulled out of school and tutored at home. Wednesday night, James Dupont attended a meeting at Le Roy Junior-Senior High School hoping to find some answers about what may be wrong with his daughter. In the first week of December, his 17-year-old daughter suddenly developed tics, showing Tourette-like symptoms. But she isn't the only one. "I worry about my daughter's future," says Dupont. "She's only 17. She can't even drive now... My daughter hasn't been able to go to school for a month because she's got this so bad." Dupont hoped that the meeting with the New York State Department of Health would give him some answers, but he says he's more frustrated and confused than before. "It's a tearjerker and it hits you in the gut at the same time. You feel frustrated and helpless because you don't know what you can do, and you're not getting any answers." "Jan. 27 update: Erin Brockovich is on the case! The environmental activist, made famous by the 2000 movie starring Julia Roberts as the crusading single mom, tells USA TODAY she is investigating the case of more than a dozen teens from one upstate New York school plagued by mysterious, Tourette's-like symptoms. One neurologist who has seen most of the affected girls has diagnosed their illness as psychological in origin; but that diagnosis has been difficult for some parents and community members to accept. Brockovich told USA TODAY that at the request of local residents, she is looking into a 1970 train accident that spilled cyanide and an industrial solvent called trichloroethene close to the site of the Le Roy, New York school. Alot of people suffer from conditions/diseases but don't really look sick. There are many of these illnesses and they can take a huge toll on ones life. Most can't work or do things as they used to. They can be any age, race or gender. Some of the band students at two Rival schools have fallen ill with symtoms of the flu. The illness seems to have taken place the day after the students meet for a band battle. The students in each band are absent from school for 2 consecutive days returning 2 school after the 2 day sickness. As the investigator I am 2 find out when the illness took place and what may be the cause of the illness.
