Global X interviews Tim Brown, the CEO of IDEO, a global design firm that helps organizations and companies innovate around their products and services. Tim Brown remembers that when he went to India with Jacqueline Novogratz (founder and CEO of Acumen Fund), he was impressed by the systemic thinking and level of innovation that Dr.Govindappa Venkataswamy (Dr. V) had brought to the Aravind Eye Care Hospital in Madurai. It is now believed to be the best eye care and teaching facility in the world. The lesson? "By trying to serve those who have the most needs, you can end up being truly innovative, to a point where those innovations have relevance not only in the developing world but in the developed world also."
IDEO Designers (One Week in Two Minutes)
Watch a week of design work in under two minutes... On a recent project, IDEO used a time-lapse camera to capture the nature of our work for curious clients. This video shows an entire week of our efforts (Monday through Friday, from 9 am until 6 pm), condensed into two minutes. The work that week was a combination of ideation and concept refinement, and it involved a lot of sketching and concepting. You can tell when a new workday begins, as our clothes change. (NOTE: There is no audio.)
IDEO Labs - Amazing 3D Immersion Technology
If there was ever any doubt whether manipulating our visual senses would be enough to trick our bodies into responding then this video is a must see, not to mention it is quite funny seeing a full grown man flailing his arms around to keep his balance even though he is physically standing on solid ground and isn't even moving! Imagine adding in sound, tactile feedback, etc... IDEO labs has created a simple, featherweight headset, a 10' x 10' x 10' white room, and $600000 worth of projector and computer equipment, combined with the smarts of the folks at Eon Reality, results in one insanely real experience for this user. Can you imagine playing a game of Quake or Call of Duty with this setup? I think we can all agree that the future is going to be awesome! So the question now is... when can I get one? AB005 Final Project - IDEO and The Simmons Project

Synopsis: This video is our final presentation for our Case Study module, AB005 Special Projects. It is made in reference to the case "Phase Zero: Introducing New Services at IDEO(A)" by Harvard Business School. In this video, IDEO, a leading product design company, has just completed a Phase 0 presentation consisting mostly of market research to Simmons, a mattress company. It has identified target markets of young singles and "empty nesters" for Simmons and has created certain product lines to suit their needs. Kurt Ling is the general manager in Simmons who has engaged IDEO in the project. However, there seems to be some miscommunicaton between IDEO and Simmons as the latter did not get back to IDEO even after two months! Hence, as the two junior members of the Simmons project team, we have produced this short video for IDEO's top management to show our evaluation of the project, as well as how we can improve it going forward. Field Observations with Fresh Eyes - Tom Kelley (IDEO)
"Design firm IDEO's General Manager Tom Kelley shares a case study that demonstrates the value opportunities that can arise when designers, innovators, and entrepreneurs see with fresh eyes. He cites his company's challenge to design a new children's toothbrush. Rather than scaling the product back - going with the industry standard that smaller people needed a smaller product - his team did hands-on field research, and noticed that children tended to grip a toothbrush in their fist, necessitating a chunkier, wider design. The new take on an old product re-invented it, made it the best-seller in its field, and re-designed the entire shelf spectrum of all other children's toothbrush manufacturers."
