Survival Mythbusters: Warming shot of brandy, Hypothermia
My favorite Saturday morning cartoons loved to show St. Bernards bounding through the snow with their casks slung around their necks, bringing brandy (which always had bubbles for some reason) to wayward mountain travelers. Turns out the St. Bernards were carrying mail rather than brandy, but plenty of modern skiers carry bota bags filled with wine or brandy when they're on the slopes nevertheless. They claim the alcohol warms them up at the top of the mountain. I'll leave the wisdom of skiing drunk for another day, but for now let's talk about alcohol as a chemical warming agent. Alcohol as Anti-Freeze Alcohol has a much lower freezing temperature than water; vodka and other 80 proof (40% alcohol) liquors have a freezing point of about -22 degrees; water freezes at 32 degrees. It stands to reason that alcohol would chemically be somehow warmer than ice and snow. The truth is that a lower freezing temperature has everything to do with the chemical composition of the alcohol and nothing to do with any magical properties it may have to warm us up. Basic physics means that drinking a cold beverage will draw heat from your body, and drinking a hot beverage will add heat to your body. Theoretically then, alcohol shouldn't add or subtract heat differently than any other beverage. "But Alcohol Makes Me Feel Warmer!" Of course, you knew it couldn't be that simple. Alcohol has a reputation for warming us up on cold days because it makes us feel warmer when we drink it. Alcohol ...

Robert Albin, Cheating death by therapeutic hypothermia after cardic arrest.
Jim McNab of Dunwoody has one killer story to tell. On March 30, McNab went into sudden cardiac arrest and died. But McNab is still very much alive. You could say McNab has cheated death three times. McNab was shot in Vietnam and battled Leukemia. Then one night six weeks ago, McNab beat the odds, big time. "We decided to go to bed. It was about 11:00 at night. And I walked this way to the porch light," said McNab. McNab had no idea his heart was about to stop. "I went over to turn the lights out and she heard this crashing sound," McNab said "So I come running out and from here, I can look, I can see him and it looks bad," said McNab's wife Kaylyn. Kaylyn McNab ran down to her husband. "And there I was lying on my back, but not breathing, no heart, pulse, nothing. So she freaked out," said Jim McNab. Kaylyn McNab said she called 911 and the operator guided her through CPR. Kaylyn remembered her neighbor Dr. Robert Albin was a pulmonologist at St. Joseph's Hospital. Dr. Albin said he was getting ready for bed when he got a call from 911. "And, again, I'll never forget this, as I get there, his wife is on the driveway and she screams, 'Robert, I think he's dead. Jim's dead!'" said Dr. Albin. Jim McNab's heart had been stopped for 10 minutes. It took paramedics nearly 10 more minutes to get a pulse. "I was out for somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes. Technically, dead," said Jim McNab. With a heartbeat, sudden cardiac arrest sufferers usually has about five minutes before ...

Slow and Gentle Are Best in Treating Hypothermia
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http We talked last week about ways to avoid cold-weather injuries. Today we are going to talk about emergency treatment of hypothermia.Hypothermia can be mild, moderate or severe. Mild hypothermia is something that most people in cold climates have experienced at one time or another. You feel so cold that your body starts to shake -- not very much, but uncontrollably. The treatment for mild hypothermia starts with getting out of the cold and, if necessary, changing into dry clothes. Drinking warm, non-alcoholic liquids and eating something sugary can stop the shivering. Taking a warm bath or sitting by a fire or doing some exercise can also help the body warm up. These are all common-sense treatments. But treatment needs change when people enter the moderate or severe stages of hypothermia. In that situation, their body temperature drops below thirty-five degrees Celsius. They lose the ability to think clearly. Their muscles become stiff. They might bump into things or fall over objects. Members of search-and-rescue teams will first try to prevent additional heat loss. They will place extra covering around the chest, head and neck of hypothermia victims to keep them warm. Hypothermia victims need medical help as soon as possible. Working quickly to get people out of the cold is important. However, hypothermia victims must be moved slowly and gently. Any rough or sudden movement ...

Therapeutic hypothermia used to treat LA Marathon cardiac arrest victim
Jay Yim, 21, had worked on improving his fitness since age 15. In preparation for this year's Los Angeles Marathon on March 21, the University of Southern California pre-med student had been training with a marathon club and regularly did 10-mile runs on his own. The day before the race, he had a carbo-loading dinner with his club members. According to his brother Roy, who spoke with him that night, Jay sounded fine and ready to go. On race day, Roy watched his brother's progress on the marathon website. "They had a feature that allowed you to monitor a runner as he passed each milepost," Roy said. "The computer estimate said, based on his progress, he'd finish in 3:15." But as Jay reached mile 18, something went terribly wrong. He grabbed his chest and collapsed onto the road. He'd suffered a cardiac arrest. In the first in a string of amazing events that would ultimately save his life, Jay happened to fall about 70 yards from Josh Sewell, a motorcycle officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. Sewell immediately moved Jay off the course and began CPR. "His eyes were rolling back in his head, he had no pulse and was not breathing," Sewell recalled. "He was in full cardiac arrest." Another amazing event occurred when, somehow, out of the crowd emerged off-duty physician Dr. Charles Chandler, a clinical professor of surgery at UCLA. He and Sewell continued CPR and called for an ambulance. "After about four to five minutes, we had return of a strong pulse, but he was ...

Hypothermia Cure and Prevention
Please hypothermia is condition of organism exposed to low temperatures because of cold weather etc. and can be divided to 3 stages according to body temperature and associated signs and symptoms. Very important is to provide gradual warming, it means not to use hot water for bath or shower, but start with mild (about 10 Celsius degrees), continue with warmer (20 Celsius degrees) and finish with water of 40 Celsius degrees. after about 5 minutes. The reason for gradual warming is risk of vessels damage after big temperature difference, because vessels cannot change their state so quickly. Please for more information see firstaidbasics.org
