Multicopters is an exciting new area of hobby robotics. They are also sometimes known as UAV's, and essentially they are "flying hobby robots". They are made with a center that holds micro controllers, sensors, receivers, transmitters, power and payload. Pointing out from the center are a number of pins holding motors and propellers. This is the first episode looking at Multicopters, and Frits has a very advanced Hexacopter in the air. Later episodes will look at products you can buy, and some cool cheap and less complex alternatives new on the market will be demonstrated. www.hobby-lobby.com 105" wingspan, 65" long, 1542 sq. in. wing area, ready to fly weight is 15-1/2 pounds (electric). With over 10000 Champs built between 1944-1951 it was one of civil aviations great hits. Thousands of men and women learned to fly in a Champ and came to love it's easy flying characteristics. Faithful to its roots the Pilot-1 Quarter Scale Champ is an easy to fly, easy to fall in love with model. Construction is all built up laser cut wood. All outlines are scale and the wing has scale wing rib spacing. The airplane can be built with electric power or as a 1.20 glow or 23cc gas model. With almost 11 sq. ft. of wing area, the Champ has a light wing loading and very good manners, from taxi out to touch down. The entire airframe is covered in genuine Oracover. Wings and struts are easily removed for transport and storage. Cowl is epoxy fiberglass, pre-painted to match the covering. Battery access is through a hatch on the underside of the nose; landing gear is pre-assembled heavy-duty wire unit, ready to bolt into place. Assembly requires 12-16 hours. As an electric model the 1:4 Scale Champ requires 4 standard size servos; add one more for a gas or glow powered version. For 4-channels: Aileron (2 servos), Elevator, Rudder and Throttle.

1 Single Rotor Blade helicopter experiment, Horizon Hobby Blade 400.
*** Please read before Commenting*** Proving the Single Rotor Blade Rotor head concept to myself in my past single rotor bladed videos led me to the next step, a Cyclic Collective Pitch Helicopter. I used my Blade 400 for this experiment. Since having success with my truly one bladed helicopter, the Hyperfly with no tail rotor blades this was just natural and easy to do. Again, this machine and setup surprised me as it is quieter, uses less power, is just as maneuverable or better than stock. Since there is not as much blade turbulence, the one blade is quite sufficient, using less power with longer run times, and being quieter. My Physics friends tell me that as long as the counter weight is on, there would be no extra stress on the bearings. Bearings get changed regular on helis, so this is no problem, if they start wobbling. IF they do, I will tell you. But since it is SO smooth, I think the bearings will last longer, however I have never burned out a bearing in a helicopter, not even a gas one with 1 blades either. That's because I crash them long before that. LOL! So I think bigger helis could use this technique someday, but in the mean time, I will continue to fly my Helis with one rotor blade, because I can certainly see the difference. If you disagree, maybe you should make your own to see for yourself before making an opinion. Bumble bees aren't supposed to be able to fly, due to unusual design and balance .....but they do! The build went fairly smooth. There are some tight spots to work in which slows you down. I had to shave a little foam in the battery bay to get different lipos to fit. The Wires aren't labeled that well. Takes a little experimenting to get to know which wire is definitely which. Use the manual for your transmitter setup as a guide. I played with the TX for another 30 minutes until I got the switches the way I wanted them. But overall, a solid plane! LOVE THE DETAILED COCKPIT!!!!
