Christopher Hitchens - The Best of the Hitchslap

* Part Two is complete - www.youtube.com * Christopher Hitchens at his finest - some of my favorite moments by the writer who has inspired the ideals of skepticism, free inquiry, and rational thought in so many. I believe Hitchslap is now the proper term for the unflinching intellectual prowess displayed in these exchanges.

Christopher Hitchens - The Best of the Hitchslap - Part Two

I have been working on this video for some time, and had planned to upload it today as the rendering completed just yesterday morning. When I heard the sad news of Professor Hitchens' death late in the evening, I struggled with the thought of canceling this upload. It seemed somehow opportunistic to release a video so soon after, even if this coordination was not intentionally planned in advance. The beginning of this video especially carries a different meaning now that this news has reached all of us. In the end, I decided I could cope with this feeling of unease in order to share more of his thoughts, provide a moment of reflection, and pay humble tribute to the man that is an inspiration to me and so many others. If the first video was a general critique of religion, this edition is aimed at responses to common complaints non-believers hear again and again. Mr. Hitchens, your contributions to the struggle for liberty, equality, rationality, and freedom will never be forgotten. Your forcefulness, wit, and intelligence gave me the strength and courage to argue for these ideals in my own life. That you have done the same for so many is your great and immortal contribution to mankind. These seemingly small victories are what change the world; one action, one mind at a time, until the tide cannot be held back any longer. Your actions and words have moved us ever closer to that point. Thank you.

Hitchens on the Catholic Church

One of the great rants by Christopher Hitchens was when he participated in a debate in England put on by the Intelligence Squared organization in October 2009. The subject being debated was: The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world. His opponents were a Catholic bishop from Africa (Archbishop John Onaiyekan) and Catholic MP Ann Widdecombe. Supporting him was Stephen Fry. In fact, this rant has been called his best ever on the subject of the Catholic Church. A version of this video has already been posted on You-Tube, but this video focuses on just this rant by Hitchens.

Christopher Hitchens and Newt Gingrich: What kind of war are we fighting?

Taped July 18, 2002 What kind of war is the war on terrorism? Ordinarily wars are fought against proper nouns—against Germany during the Second World War or against the Soviet Union during the cold war, for example. Now we're being asked to fight a war against a common noun, terrorism. Just how accurate and useful is the phrase "war on terrorism"? Is this a war? And who exactly is the enemy—Al Qaeda? Al Qaeda plus all other terrorists around the world? Al Qaeda plus all other terrorists plus all the countries in which the terrorists operate? In other words, just how good a job are the president and the administration doing, not just in prosecuting the war but in defining the objectives?

Hitchens, Dawkins & Grayling

socraticmama.com [Inspiration & Support for Secular Families] My other version with the Numpty speeches removed: www.youtube.com www.intelligencesquared.com 27th March 2007, debate: "We would be better off without religion" PROPOSING THE MOTION: Christopher Hitchens, Professor Richard Dawkins & AC Grayling. Christopher Hitchens begins by making the case for religion being at the root of many conflicts that have shaped the 20th-21st century world, citing the current situations in the Balkans, the Middle East, and Northern Ireland. Here, it has been intra-faith disputes that have caused or aggravated the conflicts and slowed political and social progress. Richard Dawkins focuses his support for the motion on the blind faith that leads even intelligent people to deny key scientific principles, citing many American students' opposition to the theory of evolution as an example. Anthony Grayling illustrates how the Bible's view of what constitutes a good person is at odds with the modern Western view of what constitutes a good person, arguing that it is possible to appreciate the natural world and feel such emotions as empathy, sympathy, and love without holding religious views. OPPOSING THE MOTION: Dr Nigel Spivey, Roger Scruton & Rabbi Julia Neuberger. Dr Nigel Spivey opens the opposition by offering an archaeological and anthropological perspective. Pointing to the "Creative Explosion" of 40000 years ago, he suggests that religion is a concept that is part of the human ...

Peter Hitchens vs. Russell Brand

Observe how Russell Brand launches into a tirade of abuse as Peter Hitchens asks an unwelcome question. Does he not notice the irony in accusing someone of 'bigotry' in a manner which is far more vicious and obsessive than anything contained in the original question? And what is it about Daily Mail jokes which makes a certain type of person bounce up and down in their seat ? They became tiresome a long time ago. (To those who are curious, Peter's question about 'responsibility' followed from Mr Brand's suggestion that he was somehow passive in his own former drug addiction - it was like some uncontrollable force of nature which simply swept him up. God help us.)

Stephen Fry & friends on the life, loves and hates of Christopher Hitchens - IQ2 talks

hitchfry.intelligencesquared.com In this historic event, Stephen Fry and other friends of Christopher Hitchens came together to celebrate the life and work of this great writer, iconoclast and debater. Fry was joined on stage at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall by Richard Dawkins and the two discussed Hitch's unflinching commitment to the truth. Hollywood actor Sean Penn was beamed in from LA by Google+ and, between cigarette puffs, read from Hitch's acclaimed work, The Trial of Henry Kissinger. Five friends of Hitch spoke via satellite in New York: satirist Christopher Buckley and editor Lewis Lapham mused on Hitch's prowess as a journalist. 'Like a pot of gold', said Lapham. Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and James Fenton delighted the audience with stories of Hitchens as a young man. Rushdie drew roars of laughter when he recounted a word game invented by Amis and Hitchens where the word 'love' is replaced with 'hysterical sex'. Particular favourites included Hysterical Sex in the Time of Cholera and Hysterical Sex Is All You Need. Watching the event with Hitch at his bedside in Texas, Hitch's wife Carol and novelist Ian McEwan provided an email commentary. 'His Rolls Royce mind is still purring beautifully', typed McEwan. The event was watched live by 2500 at the venue, and by thousands more in UK cinemas and online.

Christopher Hitchens: Genocide

FULL DEBATE: www.youtube.com socraticmama.com [Inspiration & Support for Secular Families] 13th Sept, 2004 Motion: "A pre-emptive foreign policy is a recipe for disaster" Chair: Francine Stock. For: Senator Gary Hart & Sir Simon Jenkins Against: Christopher Hitchens & David Aaronovitch. ** Gary Hart: Despite the theoretical nature of the motion, the point at issue is America's invasion of Iraq. He says that with an immediate and unavoidable threat, a nation does not require international acceptance to defend itself, but in the case of Iraq that threat was not present. ** Simon Jenkins: Not against the concept of intervention or pre-emption, but has two basic concerns. Firstly, that we cannot have a state of affairs where any country can go to war; and secondly, that we should not extend this concept to groups that constitute a threat within other states. ** Christopher Hitchens: It is often assumed the concept of pre-emption runs counter to the nexus of international law. However, he points to many treaties which suggest otherwise, such as the Genocide Convention -- which mandates signatory powers (upon receiving information) to begin pre-emptive action. In his view a foreign policy that doesn't have a pre-emptive character is doomed to disaster ** David Aaronovitch: A largely reactive foreign policy is certainly a recipe for disaster, and believes that the test of a pre-emptive foreign policy is the conflict in Afghanistan. He argues that if you vote in favour of this ...
