HIDEAWAY (1966) by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers- featuring Eric Clapton
One of the first great rock guitar tones was the Blues Breakers 'Beano' album featuring a young Eric Clapton playing a Les Paul Standard through a Marshall amp. Even now, many believe this is Eric's greatest guitar work. At the time, 1966, no one could quite believe the fluid guitar licks and the biting tone. This album was the basis for the slogans around London saying 'Clapton is God'. Here is great info on the equipment Clapton used, including a treble booster. www.gibson.com Hideaway is a Freddy King instrumental that while sticking to the basic structure, has Clapton's own stamp. It was a huge inspiration for guitarists at the time and since, and many learned guitar copying licks off this album. (Just look at the many guitarists who have put their own versions on You Tube!). Sadly there is no film footage of this vintage Clapton, so I have put together a 'Ken Burns' type slide video using every Blues Breaker era image I could find. Comments are invited but please no 'my guitarist is better than your guitarist'!

Guitarist Freddie King rode to fame in the early '60s with a spate of catchy instrumentals which became instant bandstand fodder for fellow bluesmen and white rock bands alike. Employing a more down-home (thumb and finger picks) approach to the BB King single-string style of playing, King enjoyed success on a variety of different record labels. Furthermore, he was one of the first bluesmen to employ a racially integrated group on-stage behind him. Influenced by Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Rogers, and Robert Jr. Lockwood, King went on to influence the likes of Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Lonnie Mack, among many others. Freddie King (who was originally billed as "Freddy" early in his career) was born and raised in Gilmer, TX, where he learned how to play guitar as a child; his mother and uncle taught him the instrument. Initially, King played rural acoustic blues, in the vein of Lightin' Hopkins. By the time he was a teenager, he had grown to love the rough, electrified sounds of Chicago blues. In 1950, when he was 16 years old, his family moved to Chicago, where he began frequenting local blues clubs, listening to musicians like Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Little Walter, and Eddie Taylor. Soon, the young guitarist formed his own band, the Every Hour Blues Boys, and was performing himself. In the mid-'50s, King began playing on sessions for Parrott and Chess Records, as well as playing with Earlee Payton's Blues Cats and the Little Sonny ...

For more info - www.eagle-rock.com David Sanborn has been a frequent visitor to the Montreux Jazz Festival, either headlining in his own right, as a sideman or as part of nineties "supergroup" Legends. This DVD focuses on his second headlining appearance in 1984 when he was touring in support of his "Straight To The Heart" album, which would see him win the second of his six Grammy Awards to date. The set combines tracks from that album with others from across his career. It features a special guest appearance by Rickie Lee Jones on piano and vocals on the track "Autumn Leaves". In 2008 David Sanborn released his 23rd album and his diverse career continues to thrive both on stage and in the studio. Hideaway
A man has a near-death experience and awakens to find himself spiritually attached to another who went through a similar experience in this horror movie. The story is based on a Dean Koontz novel. Hatch Harrison, an antique dealer, finds himself in an extraordinary position following the car wreck in which he was broad-sided by a semi-truck. Although his wife and teenage daughter survive, Hatch was actually dead for two hours before innovative resuscitator Dr. Jonas Nybern was able to bring him back. Hatch tries to resume his normal life, but encounters difficulty when he begins having horrific hallucinations. It turns out that the "visions" are really the experiences of Vassago, a Satanist who ritually kills people. Somehow he and the killer are connected. Vassago, too can experience events in Hatch's life; he begins to threaten Hatch by telling him he will use his daughter for a virgin sacrifice. The two men must battle it out spiritually.
