Amtrak HHP-8 at New Carrollton
"The HHP-8 is a double-ended electric locomotive manufactured by a consortium of Bombardier and Alstom. HHP-8 stands for High HorsePower 8000. The HHP-8s replaced the GE E60s and supplement the aging AEM-7s on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, though some of the AEM-7s have been upgraded to AEM-7ACs to match the hauling power of the HHP-8s. The locomotive can haul Amfleet cars at speeds of up to 125 mph. They are sometimes referred to by train crews as "Hippos". Others refer to them as "Bananas" Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) also operates HHP-8s on its Penn Line between Perryville and Washington, DC. The locomotives are visually similar to Acela power cars, but they have noticeably shorter and stubbier noses. The HHP-8s are equipped with visible couplers and head end power receptacles at both ends. These are hidden by covers on the front end of Acela power cars during normal operations. During testing of the equipment between 1999 and 2000 the locomotives experienced a number of problems related to the differing power supply voltages used over the Northeast Corridor. They were designed to automatically switch between voltages, but this feature malfunctioned in testing. Cracking in the trucks was identified as a potential problem during testing. Safety officials at the time felt that potential crack development could be identified before failure with proper inspection. HHP-8 Flys through snowed in station at 100mph at Canton Junction 2/3/09
I believe this train was traveling somewhere between 90-110mph last night. This Amtrak train came right after an inbound MBTA train to Boston left the station. Many people were still on the platform walking to their cars when this train came by, direct quote from bystander behind me after train went by "Holy #$%^" At the end of the video you see one passenger griping the light pole in pure SHOCK. The winds almost knocked me over. Anyways Thanks For Watching!
Lionel Amtrak HHP-8 set at Westport, CT First Night
This is actually the "Dennis the Train Man" event, as listed on the www.firstnightww.com site. He's the one in the conductor cap, by the way. My extended Lionel HHP-8 set makes an appearance at this year's "First Night' randomly swapping places with the Metro-North M-7 set on the siding. Only 5 of the six cars appearing in the "Test track" video are in attendance, as the siding I had originally planned for was a smidge too long for the available space at the Westport Library (the band playing after our exhibit had their equipment occupying part of the room). and thus wasn't long enough for all six cars. Also present are Dennis' Hogwart's Express (with two extra cars), some freight trains, steam engines and subway cars. Fun was had by all, in-between necessary track inspections on my loop, brought on my the "semi-compatible" transition joiners connecting the Atlas O track to the tubular straight track (they were designed for 'O' tubular rather than the smaller 'o-27' I had on hand). New for this year is the siding and block control which allowed me to swap trains without removing any from the track. You'll see the swap occur a couple of times in these two videos. What you won't see are the collisions I had from failing to re-set the switch back to the mainline aster pulling a train into it. I didn't even have the common courtesy to have the camcorder pointed at them so I could have a blooper reel :)

Test Track: Lionel Amtrak HHP-8 set (6-cars) 1 of 2
Lionel 2009 Northeast Corridor set. Standing in stark contrast to the 1989 GG-1 set in the previous video, is this ready-to-run set of completely modern 2009 Amtrak NEC equipment, sporting an accurate-looking HHP-8 motor at the head end, and the most detailed-looking Amfleet cars in O Gauge (overlooking the missing diaphragms between cars for now :) ) Whomever was in charge of this set's design, was most certainly NOT the one in charge of the Metro-North M-7 set, because if they were the same person/team...no, it's just too big a lesson to learn for a mere mortal to absorb :D From the decently downsized locomotive, to the longest passenger cars ever put in a Lionel ready-to-run set, (and even the 48-inch curves included in the box), this is hands-down the Cadillac of Lionel starter sets. Now, Lionel didn't make any add-on cars for this set this year, so a friend who only wanted the locomotive sold his cars to me. Hopefully this means I have the first 6-car consist on YouTube :) (which this loco is more than capable of handling) Now, as for comparing it to other Amtrak sets...well, I don't think many people are going to hook these up to Atlas O or MTH coaches, because quite frankly Lionel took a different tack in regards to downsizing this equipment. To get an idea of their methodology, compare Lionel's Lionmaster articulated steamers to their MTH RailKing counterparts. Yeah, that's kind of how it is. Hello and Good Afternoon my friends, (cheesy intro) Last week, It was 90 degrees last Wednesday and the sky was only "blue" not a cloud in sight? As I stepped out of my car i caught a Acela Express and he was MOVING!!! I also caught an Amtrak Regional and a couple MBCR trains. Oh! and the inbound "Train Approaching" electronic signs never went off when i was looking at the outbound MBCR train. Therefor i turned around and held my hat as it blew by! I also want to announce that i think i should have a short and sweet intro that looks and sounds good. But please tell me if you think Intros are pointless and you just want to see the video. BloomTV: Asheru & HHP Intruduce the BloomBars South Africa Excange
On January 14th, 2010, Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP) or Jabba, one of South Africa's leading Hip Hop artists for the last decade, will travel to Washington, DC for a two-week Artist-In-Bloom residency at BloomBars, a Washington-based non-profit organization that works to inspire and unite communities through the arts while nurturing artists committed to serving the community. The goal of the residency will be to build a bridge between Hip-Hop communities in South Africa and the United States and promote cross-cultural awareness about critical issues affecting those communities, namely education through the arts and HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness. In addition to performances and workshops at BloomBars and other venues in Washington, DC and New York, Jabba will spend much of his time speaking at high schools, juvenile detention facilities, and lecturing at colleges and universities. Throughout the residency, Jabba will be traveling and collaborating with Gabriel Asheru Benn, a widely acclaimed Hip-Hop artist, educator, youth activist, and recipient of the prestigious Peabody Award. As an Artist-in-Bloom Resident Fellow, Asheru will serve as Jabbas guide and ambassador to the larger Hip-Hop and education communities.
