Hubble Laser Art on the Hayden Planetarium Sphere
Starting Monday, November 14, a unique type of space show will play outside the Hayden Planetarium. Bright green waves of laser light will ripple across the Hayden Sphere from 5 to 11 pm every evening until Sunday, November 27, to illustrate how the Hubble Space Telescope analyzes distant galaxies, quasars, and other celestial objects in the universe—and to mark the opening of Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration later this month. The laser art, From the Distant Past, was created by German artist Tim Otto Roth in collaboration with astronomer Bob Fosbury, the former head of the Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility. The installation resembles the squiggly line of an electrocardiogram. Behind the luminous pattern is a message: astronomical telescopes produce more than just beautiful pictures of the sky. From the Distant Past is based on data captured by Hubble's spectrometers, advanced instruments that act like prisms, separating light from the cosmos into its constituent colors. This provides a spectrum "fingerprint" of the object being observed, which, once decoded, tells scientists about its temperature, chemical composition, and motion, key indicators in understanding the development and age of the universe. Hubble's spectrometers are especially skilled at hunting for black holes, volumes of space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. "Hubble is all about looking long ago and far away," said Michael Shara, a ...

The Solar Neighborhood After WISE
The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer mission is partnering with the American Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium to visualize the Universe that WISE will reveal to us. Using a brown dwarf data simulation provided by WISE team members, this data has been integrated into Hayden's Digital Universe Atlas, a 3-D atlas of the Universe for personal computers, thereby demonstrating what the solar neighborhood might look like once WISE has completed its mission. As WISE data comes in, the Hayden Planetarium will be poised to quickly integrate them into the Atlas, providing a 3-D context of these data relative to the known Universe.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Science is in Our DNA
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson believes in the power of science -- so much so that he gets hate mail for it. From children. As director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, Tyson made the controversial decision to remove references to Pluto as the ninth planet in the museum's exhibits. To the chagrin of fifth graders everywhere, My Very Excellent Mother would no longer be Serving Up Nine Pizzas. "When you conduct science, it is the natural world that is the ultimate decider in what is true and what is not," he says. To learn more visit our special "Humanizing Technology" series: bigthink.com

Neil deGrasse Tyson on the 10th Annual Asimov Debate
The 10th annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate— Moon, Mars and Beyond: Where next for the manned space program? — will take place at the American Museum of Natural History on March 15, 2010 and is presented, in part, in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Sapce and the 75th anniversary of the opening of the original Hayden Planetarium. Where to go next is one of the hottest topics for NASAs manned program. Should we proceed straight to Mars, should we return to the Moon, or should multiple destinations be the goal? Central to the debate are thorny issues that relate to science, launch hardware, international competition, national security, shrinking budgets, and political will. The Obama administrations recent decision to indefinitely delay the next voyage to the Moon while simultaneously planning a new launch vehicle makes this Asimov Debate particularly topical and newsworthy. Moderated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, this years Asimov Memorial Debate will include panelists Kenneth Ford (Institute for Human & Machine Cognition), Lester Lyles (United States Air Force), Paul Spudis (Lunar and Planetary Institute), Steven Squyres (Cornell University) and Robert Zubrin (Mars Society). Produced/Edited by James Sims. For more information visit www.amnh.org
