Simon Peyton Jones: Data Parallel Haskell

There are many approaches to exploiting multi-cores, but a particularly promising one is the "data-parallel" paradigm, because it combines massive parallelism (on both shared and distributed memory) with a simple, single-control-flow programming model. Indeed, I think that data parallelism is the only way we will be able to exploit tens or hundreds of processors effectively. Alas, data-parallel programming is usually restricted to "flat" data parallelism, which is good for implementers but bad for programmers. Instead, I'll describe the "nested" data parallel programming model, first developed in the 90's by Blelloch and Sabot. It is great for programmers but much harder to implement; as a result, it's virtually unknown in practice. It's really only feasible to support nested data parallelism in a purely functional language, so we are building a high-performance implementation in Haskell.

Haskell ASCII 3D wireframe animator

Animates wireframes in a 3D coordinate system using only plain text and a few control codes for cursor movement. This video demonstrates coordinate systems with a single point marking the origin, a static cube and a few different animated cubes. The math used is simpler (and less correct) than what real 3D engines use, which results in visual oddities in some cases. The background music is Lambda Fantasy by Foldplop (that's me!) and the animations at the end are a couple of random Quartz compositions I put there to make the lengths of the video and audio tracks match.

HaRe - the Haskell Refactorer (a mini demo)

The Haskell Refactorer HaRe was developed in our EPSRC project "Refactoring Functional Programs" www.cs.kent.ac.uk Building on Programatica's Haskell-in-Haskell frontend and Strafunski's generic programming library, it supported module-aware refactorings over the full Haskell'98 language standard. Interfaces to the refactoring engine were provided for both Vim and Emacs (this demo uses HaRe via GVim on Windows). While HaRe has continued to see occasional contributions by students and researchers, who use its Haskell program transformation API as a platform for their own work, it is not currently maintained. As the Haskell environment marches on, this demo is meant to record a snapshot of what working with HaRe could be like when it still built (here with GHC 6.8.3). The lessons learnt (note, eg, the preservation of comments, and the limited use of pretty-printing, to minimize layout changes) are well documented at the project site, and should be taken into account when porting the ideas to the GHC Api, or other Haskell frontends.

I watched some of it on Tuesday and I was interested to see which jurors were picked. The final jury was set to be picked today at 1:30. I adjusted my schedule so that I could be down there at 1:30 today. I had a trial a few blocks away that was due to last until around 1:00 today. My plan was to head over there when I finished my trial. As my trial was ending, I got the following text from my brother "I hear that you will be testifying in the underwear bomber case". This was news to me as my status as a witness was undetermined as of Tuesday. I gave my brother a call and he said he heard on the radio, that stand-by Anthony Chambers said in court this morning that I would be testifying. While walking to Federal Court to watch final jury selection, I ran into someone that works with stand-by attorney Chambers. He told me that final jury selection was done as it didn't take as long as expected. He also told me that it was Umar that said he would call me as a witness, not Chambers. He then said Chambers is right there, go talk to him and he pointed across the street. Chambers was standing on the sidewalk across the street. I talked to Chambers for a minute and we agreed to talk again soon. He said I won't be testifying for approximately another month as the trial is supposed to be lengthy. I contend that this story is just the tip of the iceberg into the US government's black operations to further the Patriot Act, funding for Homeland Security and the TSA, and to keep intensity up for the so called War on Terror. Respected lawyer and community leader, Kurt Haskell, has nothing to gain from pointing his finger at the federal government. He witnessed the underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, being whisked past security and led onto NorthWest Airlines flight 253, by a well-dressed man with an American accent- all without the passenger's proper visa and passport documentation. Kurt and I went to Umar's status conference this week. Being in a court room, not being the "attorney" for one of the parties, is weird in itself. Sitting in the back watching the proceedings is odd to me. Kurt and I got there early and sat in the hallway until the doors opened. Once the doors opened, we went in and took a seat. From what I could tell, the only other people there besides us were the media, attorneys for the other side, and I believe, some CIA agents. Kurt was asked by a reporter who he was with (I think they thought we were reporters) and he told her that we were passengers, which sparked her interest. She was from The Free Press and talked to us a lot before the hearing, during it, and in the hall afterwards. nothing we said to her was reported in the Free Press, which did not surprise us since mainstream media seems to steer clear of reporting our story. I don't blame the reporters though, I think they are truly interested, but when they give the story to their higherups, the stories are shot down because we are speaking out against the government, who helps fund them/controls them.........Anyway, we walked outside and it was kinda crazy. Cameras flashing, video cameras everywhere. We talked to a bunch of TV stations, and Fox News was the only one to actually report having talked to us. I imagine Fox is able to report as they are a republican based station, and since we are speaking out against the government and the current administration is democrat ...

Bill Haskell fashions logs and wood blocks into fine, lathe-turned works of art. Since his early years, Bill has had a keen interest in creative expression. He has pursued that interest in many mediums, including silver jewelry and metal sculpture, but mainly in wood. His first encounter with woodturning was in Junior High wood shop, where a few bowls were turned using terrible tools with no instruction. Paul Joseph Watson www.prisonplanet.com Wednesday, December 30, 2009 US Customs and Border Protection officials have admitted that a second man possibly carrying explosives was detained after last weeks aborted plane bombing attack, contradicting initial statements by the FBI that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was the only person arrested or charged in relation to Fridays foiled attack. As we reported yesterday, attorney and Flight 253 eyewitness Kurt Haskell said that he saw a well-dressed Indian man aid the accused bomber to board the plane despite the fact that he had no passport and was on a terror watch list. After the incident, while the passengers were being detained, Haskell witnessed an Indian man being handcuffed and led away after a bomb-sniffing dog had flagged up his luggage. The FBI then removed the other passengers from the area, strongly indicating that explosive materials had been found in the mans bag. Officials have now been forced to acknowledge that a second man was detained despite initial FBI denials after two more witnesses came forward to validate Haskells account. Daniel Huisinga of Fairview, Tenn., who was returning from an internship in Kenya for the holidays, says he also saw a man being taken away in handcuffs at the airport after a dog search. A third person, Roey Rosenblith, told The Huffington Post on Sunday that he saw a man in a suit being placed into handcuffs and escorted out, as well, reports Michigan Live. www.prisonplanet.com

I've been in love with Haskell jewelry since the day I bought my first piece. The flow, the beauty, the imagination of these intricately wired and beaded pieces were the impetus behind my attempting to learn how to make jewelry, over twenty years ago. I view it as sort of embroidery or even collage, wired to a perforated or filigree base. This type of jewelry employs very basic beading and wire working technique, as well as manipulation of brass stampings, and collage. Maybe you have looked at this style and thought, I couldn't do that....yes you can. If you have an eye for style, want to study vintage jewelry a bit, and some determination, you'll be turning out pretty pieces before you know it. As for me....no, I'm not an expert. What I THINK I understand is the soul of this sort of jewelry, and really.....that's where it begins. You can learn technique all day long, but if you never 'get' the soul of the work, it will end up looking like just another seed-beaded jewelry item. THAT IS NOT what this is. You'll need a focal...you may have to build it. You will need things like rose montees and rhinestone headpins, old Czech glass when you can get it, vintage pearls if available.
