Duke Ellington - Harlem (1/2) 1950
Duke Ellington (1899-1974) Duke Ellington was a world-renowned figure when he composed "Harlem" in 1950. He and his band had just completed a European tour, and on the return voyage aboard the "Ile de France", Ellington had time to turn his attention to this new piece. There is some confusion about its origins. I was commissioned, according to Ellington's recollections, by Arturo Toscanini, as part of a "Portrait of New York" Suite. He referred to it as a "concerto grosso for our band and the symphony", but Toscanini, who was growing old and infirm by this time, never conducted the piece. Ellington's band recorded it in 1954, and the next year Don Gillis performed it in Carnegie Hall with the Symphony of the Air, the shortlived successor to Toscanini's NBC Symphony. Luther Henderson (1919 - 2003) was an African American arranger, composer, orchestrator, and pianist. He was educated at the Juilliard School of Music where he received a BS in 1942. Among the more than fifty Broadway musicals where he served as orchestrator and/or arranger and/or musical director and/or composer for are Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, Flower Drum Song, Funny Girl, No, No Nanette, Purlie Victorious, Ain't Misbehavin' and Jelly's Last Jam. Recently Luther Henderson's widow director-actor Billie Allen established The Luther Henderson Scholarship Fund at Henderson's alma mater, The Juilliard School of Music. Out of favor for decades (think Sidney Bechet), the soprano began making a comeback about this time. Benjamin Earl King (born September 28, 1938), better known as Ben E. King, is an American soul singer. He is perhaps best known as the singer and co-composer of "Stand by Me," a US top 10 hit in both 1961 and 1987 and a #1 hit in the UK in 1987, and as one of the principal lead singers of the R&B vocal group The Drifters. King was born Benjamin Earl Nelson in Henderson, North Carolina and moved to Harlem, New York City, New York, at the age of nine. In 1958, he joined a doo wop group called The Five Crowns. Later that year, The Drifters' manager fired the members of the group and replaced them with The Five Crowns, who had performed several engagements with the Drifters. Nelson co-wrote the first hit by the new version of the Drifters, "There Goes My Baby" (1959). He also sang lead, using his birth name, on "Save the Last Dance for Me", a song written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, "Dance With Me", "This Magic Moment", "I Count the Tears" and "Lonely Winds". King only recorded ten songs with The Drifters, including a non-single called "Temptation" which was later redone by Johnny Moore. Ben E. After a shopping spree in Soho, the fashion fanatics braved sub zero temperatures for a photo shoot on Harlem's legendary Rucker Park basketball court with Ari Marcopoulos before heading home to 116th Street for a soul food banquet at Amy Ruth's. They even squeezed in an impromptu house call on one of their grannies who hadn't seen Rocky since his videos "Peso" and "Purple Swag" blew up and landed the 24-year-old rapper with a $3 million record deal. The next day I met them and a very large Rottweiler called Brody at a crumbling mansion in New Jersey as they filmed the final scene of Rocky's "Wassup" video. It was a wild 24 hours... Tim Noakes
