Forgotten Village (1941) H. Kline/A. Hammid (FULL MOVIE)

www.zazzle.co.uk The Forgotten Village (1941) is an American documentary film -- some sources call it an ethnofiction film -- directed by Herbert Kline and Alexander Hammid, written by John Steinbeck, and narrated by Burgess Meredith. The film was released by Joseph Burstyn and Arthur Mayer. The New York State Board of Regents, acting as the state's board of censors, banned the film in New York due to the film's portrayal of childbirth and showing a baby at its mother's breast. The film depicts the conflicts between traditional life in a Mexican village, and outsiders who want to introduce modernization. Directed by Herbert Kline/Alexander Hammid Produced by Alexander Hammid/Herbert Kline (producer Rosa Harvan Kline (associate producer) Written by John Steinbeck (story and screenplay) Narrated by Burgess Meredith Music by Hanns Eisler Cinematography Alexander Hammid

Angry Boy (1950) 1/2 ALEXANDER HAMMID

In one chapter of his life, Hammid made 'social problem' documentaries for the Michigan Department of Mental Health through Affiliated Film Producers, an educational film company. 1951′s ANGRY BOY was one of these. ANGRY BOY is a documentary in that it approaches real life problems filmed in authentic surroundings with (mainly, I think) non-professional actors. However, it is a scripted and carefully-shot work. Hammid uses well-chosen and developed film design tropes such as a vocabulary of high angle and low angle shots, the heightening effect of closeups, and the physical movement of the camera towards and away from a subject, avoiding strong left-right movements with the camera. These tools — a visual blueprint through the film — work in subliminally underscoring the opening narration that states "behavior may hide as much as it reveals." (Text from www.postmodernjoan.com

For Alexander Hammid (temp score)

An expressionist/experimental short. With obvious debts to the 16mm 'film poems' of the 40s and 50s, we dedicate our little effort to one of that form's pioneers, who sometimes gets unjustly relegated to the footnotes. The theme reminds us a little bit of Sasha's life, too, though only a little. (The man in the film is not meant to be him, or anything). Shot the old school way, MOS, on cranky 16mm cameras that inserted flash frames when they felt like it. Current audio is temp track, though of course we wish the main theme had been composed just for us and none of you had ever heard it before..

Meshes of the Afternoon - 1943 (Maya Deren/A. Hammid)

www.zazzle.com Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) is a short experimental film directed by wife and husband team, Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid. The film's narrative is circular, and repeats a number of psychologically symbolic images, including a flower on a long driveway, a key falling, a door unlocked, a knife in a loaf of bread, a mysterious Grim Reaper--like cloaked figure with a mirror for a face, a phone off the hook and an ocean. Through creative editing, distinct camera angles, and slow motion, the surrealist film depicts a world in which it is more and more difficult to catch reality. In 1990, Meshes of the Afternoon was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", going into the registry in the second year of voting. According to a 2010 exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, the film cost only $275 to make. The film was the product of Deren's and Hammid's desire to create an avant garde personal film that dealt with devastating psychological problems, like the French surrealist films of the 1920s such as Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel's Un Chien Andalou (1929) and L'Age d'Or (1930). Deren and Hammid wrote, directed and performed in the film. Although Deren is usually credited as its principal artistic creator, filmmaker Stan Brakhage, who knew the couple, has claimed in his book Film at Wit's End that Meshes was in fact largely Hammid's creation ...
