Haiti Kidnapping - August 2008
Haiti's dismal economy means many have turned to kidnapping, relying on ransom money to survive. In the Cite Soleil slums, these dangerous kidnappers tell their story for the first time. "The situation is hard now. After president Aristede left, I lost my income from him. Now I kidnap and I have killed a lot of people." He is one of many kidnappers who lost their jobs as hired thugs when the dictator Arisitde was overthrown in 2004. Now they negotiate up to $4000 for the release of a captive. "This is Haiti man, a gangsters' paradise, get what you need and then get out." Native Voice Films
We Are The World 25 For Haiti - Official Video
Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) "We Are The World 25 For Haiti", in which Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti. Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici. The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

"My return trip in 2011 was a homecoming of sorts as I was fortunate to live in this magical country when I was a kid. Although it was a relatively short period of time, it had a profound impact on my life, so when I heard about the devastating earthquake on the morning of Jan. 12, 2010, I knew I had to go back and find a way to help." — Read the full article - as featured on The Huffington Post: bit.ly More information available at JaredLeto.com. Insight: Haiti - "Madame, here is your baby"
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) makes it a priority to provide life-saving, emergency obstetric care in both acute and chronic humanitarian crises. Fifteen percent of all pregnancies worldwide will experience a life-threatening complication. The most critical moment is delivery: the majority of maternal deaths occur just before, during, or just after delivery, often from complications that cannot be predicted. It is at this point that the provision of quality obstetric care is vital to save women's lives. The majority of maternal deaths are avoidable when access to emergency obstetric care is ensured.

Haiti Cholera Vaccine Project - Delivery
In April 2012, Partners In Health began vaccinating 50000 Haitians, providing them with protection against cholera that will last for up to three years. Getting to this point wasn't easy. Critics said a cholera vaccination wouldn't work in Haiti. But, at Partners In Health, we're committed to doing whatever it takes to save lives -- even if it's not easy and even if the critics doubt us. We will work tirelessly to prevent senseless deaths. As always, we worked with the national government to get this project off the ground. And the vaccine project is now moving forward before the worst of the rainy season -- and the almost inevitable spike in cases of cholera. With your continuing support, we'll build a movement to use the vaccine across Haiti -- and make investments in water and sanitation -- to put an end to the world's worst cholera epidemic. Haiti Rebuilds - A Journey of Hope
Two years ago, over two million Haitians saw their lives change forever after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked their country, killing over 200000 and displacing 1.5 million people. The world reacted quickly, sending in aid and recovery teams, pledging money and support to rebuild a country that already experienced high levels of poverty and inequality. Since the immediate earthquake aftermath the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been working with the Government of Haiti and a wide range of national and international partners, civil society organizations -- and especially with the affected communities, with Haitians at the centre of the recovery process. Haiti Rebuilds, a 20-minute documentary was created by recently graduated students from Ciné Institute, Haiti's only professional film academy in the southern coastal town of Jacmel. It was co-produced by UNDP and mentored and directed by award-winning documentary-maker Jonathan Stack. The film depicts the reconstruction process through the lenses of young Haitians who have witnessed the earthquake's devastation; but also the tremendous resilience of the Haitian people, taking the reconstruction of their country -- and their future -- into their own hands.

HAITI ON DEMAND
INTRODUCTION: The idea of using video footage as factual additive to the creative essay took me out of my comfort zone. Even while engaged in the process of documenting through the written word, I was concerned to not cross the lines between the traditional documentary and the extremes of a creative essay. The subject of "problems" in Haiti is not novel; it is only the recent earthquake of January 12, 2010 that has reiterated to the world Haiti's handicaps and its proximity to Western wealth. To the logical spectators, it doesn't make sense that Haiti is so poor yet fuels the wealth of it's neighborhood super power countries. How? That is a matter for demonstration and that's why this creative essay serves as outlet, to encourage debates that bring about some answers, and work. The interviewees who participated as in the making of Haiti on Demand, are knowledgeable on the topic of Haiti Problems. They are professionals and or individuals who have acquired first person knowledge of Haiti by visiting and or through civic engagements. This creative essay is divided into ten parts: Each part is to be read along with the video clip, video address is listed on the cover page. The format is certainly non-conventional as I have deliberately chosen not to capitalize the names of certain institutions that should be capitalized. The title of this creative essay, Haiti on Demand, is also misleading with intent. But it is that very same "dismissal with intent", which gives the title ...
HAITI: We Must Kill the BANDITS - Trailer2
For broadband pay-per-view and DVD ordering information: haitiinformationproject.net This is a video the UN and Haiti's presidential contenders in the 2010 elections don't want you to see! For broadband pay-per-view and DVD ordering information: bit.ly Before the cholera epidemic... Before the earthquake... ...it was one of the greatest human rights cover-ups in history. Haiti: We Must Kill the Bandits Blood literally runs through the streets in this chronicle of Feb. 2004's forced ouster of Haiti's elected President Jean Bertrand Aristide and the terror of its citizens that followed. While many more may have died in recent natural tragedies in Haiti, this film shows how terror and repression have had their own distinct and lasting impact on the consciousness of the Haitian people. The film shows thousands of Aristide supporters gathered to celebrate his inauguration; he promised political and social change, better education, food, and health care for the masses. But not everyone was in favor of change. Haiti's business community and intelligentsia worked against Aristide from the very beginning. And they wouldn't accept, it seems, that a poor man's vote is worth as much as a rich man's. Internationally, most mainstream media reported only negatively on Aristide. At his ouster, they gave the impression that Aristide fled to South Africa out of concern for his own safety. A transitional government was put in place as tens of thousands of pro-Aristide/Lavalas supporters ...

Haiti's Pepe Trade: How Secondhand American Clothes Became a First-Rate Business
"Haiti has practically become a trash can," says Ketcia Pierre-Louis, "where everything people in other countries don't need comes here." Pierre-Louis is a businesswoman and affiliate of the Croix-des-Bouquets Chamber of Commerce, just outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Like many critics of imported second-hand clothing, which is known locally as "pepe," she believes the practice undercuts domestic businesses and industries. Some have even called for the government to ban the practice. But Haiti's pepe trade is decidedly a business—not a charity. In fact, it starts with Haitian Americans buying goods at US thrift stores and shipping products to Port-au-Prince and other ports. Pepe may include hand-me-downs, but the clothing is high-quality, stylish, and cheap. More important, average Haitians prefer the choice of wearing such apparel—and brands like Polo, Lacoste, and Converse—to not having access to such products at all. Far from turning Haiti into a trash can, the market in pepe shows how buyers and sellers enrich each other through exchange. Produced by Tate Watkins and Jon Bougher. Approximately 4 minutes.
