Reel People Feat. Nathan Haines - Spiritual
Hailing from Londons East End, Oli Lazarus spent three years of musical osmosis in Flying Records, a shop specialising in soulful dance music. After this grounding education and with very little song writing or studio experience under his belt, he produced Reel Peoples debut single Spiritual. The entirely positive reception to his maiden voyage (plus a little help from production master Phil Asher and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Haines), helped spur him on to realise the lauded debut LP. Mike Patto, a gifted multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and arranger came on board in 2002 having previously worked with restless soul and collaborated with artists including Don E. Patto's father (also Michael) was a musical figure of note, as vocalist in renowned 60s jazz/rock fused group Patto. The influence rubbed off on Mike (and Oli), as well as other artists who proved key in shaping the Reel People sound, including Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder plus other black music heroes such as Marvin Gaye and Gil Scott Heron. Reel People have come home to roost on Papa Records for their brand new offering Seven Ways To Wonder which is released on February 25th 2008. The new longplayer has upped the ante: a heady brew of the many ingredients necessary to concoct an album worthy of a claim to their position within the classic UK soul pantheon. The first of the all-requests series, Diamonds and Dames. Interestingly, the title of this series is unintentionally similar to a blog I visit often...Diamond Dame: www.diamonddame.com Anyway, visit her cool blog for lots of great retro news and reviews. About Mary Haines: Norma Shearer played her in the movie and I'll provide a movie synopsis on my blog. The hairstyle is short but we 'faked it' here. This style is actually achieved with the 1930's/40's 'shingle' haircut as described in Creative Hairshaping by Ivan Anderson. It was very popular among the mature ladies of the time. I used an overpinning technique to mimic the fluff curls, as opposed to an underpinning technique that would give the hair a bobbed appearance. It's not perfect...but definitely workable. For centuries people have been enjoying the health benefits of the fermented beverage Kombucha, which is often mistakenly referred to a Chinese Mushroom Tea. In truth, Kombucha, which most likely hails not from China, but from Russia, is tea that has been fermented by a "SCOBY". This is an acronym for a Symbiotic Colony Of Yeast and Bacteria, the strange pancake like colony of organisms that float on top of the ferment. Typically the Kombucha begins with a steeped tea (literally the Tea plant "Camellia sinensis") and white or "unrefined" cane sugar. The SCOBY, often called the "Mother" is placed into the tea where it (the yeast and bacteria) ferment the feed on the sugars and phytonutrients of the tea, fermenting it into the drink we call Kombucha. For years I have been told that the Mother required the caffeine from the tea plant, as well as the Sucrose from the sugar. I have seen small Kombucha projects where honey, agave, and other alternative sugar sources have been used, but they ultimately are less functional than sucrose. The flavored and herbed Kombucha we see on the market is made first with tea, and then is infused with other plants after it is fermented. Arthur has discovered a method that bypasses both the Tea plant as well as the Refined Sugar! What he shares here is a truly Wild food, fully medicinal, and even better tasting than what I was used to! So, this is an official challenge to the Kombucha producers and communities to up their game!
