A powerful summer storm has ripped across eastern Australia on Thursday, dumping large hailstones, causing minor flooding and killing one golfer in a lightning strike.(Dec. 16)
BRIEF TORNADO AND LARGE 3 INCH HAILSTONES POUND COLORADO (06/11/10)
After just meeting this storm in the nick of time when it passed over Limon, Colorado I followed it along the dirt roads that ran just north of and parallel to I-70. Through out the day it seemed this storm was just a tad too elevated and just a little too outflow dominant to muster much in the way of tornadic activity but I was successful in capturing a brief view of an extremely short lived tornado. This tornado was confirmed by several other spotters who all each had their own vantage point of the storm and reported it via Spotter Network and over the radio. After realizing the tornado threat from the storm was not going to be the main show I decided to begin to repetitively core the storm with the intent of capturing some large hail video. With in the storm I was able to find stones up to 3 inches in diameter (teacup sized) falling down and even had the top right corner of my windshield get badly damaged. This was not that big of a loss as the next day I drove through near record breaking hail that totally took the windshield out. Nuff said car came out with enough dents and a broken right mirror, as well as minor damage to my house, I tried to get my car keys from my son, who was inside he was worried that one of those stones would hit me to the head, so I ended up having to stand and watch the damage happen, I eventually got the car under cover, just grateful there were no broken windows on the car It was actually quite frightening to see all this unfold.

I was on the way back from the shops when it started to rain, the first rain in 4 months. Then it started to hail. I have never seen hail this big before. Some of the hail stones were as big as golf balls.

Hail forms on condensation nuclei such as dust, insects, or ice crystals, when supercooled water freezes on contact. Hailstones are usually from the size of a small pea to the size of a golfball. In clouds containing large numbers of supercooled water droplets, these ice nuclei grow quickly at the expense of the liquid droplets because the saturation vapor pressure over ice is slightly less than the saturation vapor pressure over water. If the hailstones grow large enough, latent heat released by further freezing may melt the outer shell of the hailstone. The growth that follows, usually called wet growth, is more efficient because the liquid outer shell allows the stone to accrete other smaller hailstones in addition to supercooled droplets. These winds hold the rain and freeze it. As the process repeats, the hail grows increasingly larger. Once a hailstone becomes too heavy to be supported by the storm's updraft it falls out of the cloud. When a hailstone is cut in half, a series of concentric rings, like that of an onion, is revealed. These rings reveal the total number of times the hailstone had traveled to the top of the storm before falling to the ground.

The giant pieces of ice pelted several rural areas in east China's Jiangxi province overnight and on Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of three people, the Xinhua news agency said. The hailstones were said to be as large as 3.5cm in diameter and weighed 18g on average. The storms forced the evacuation of more than 700 people, destroyed about 2700 hectares of crops and damaged more than 900 houses, a spokesman with the Jiangxi provincial department of civil affairs said. Around 170000 Jiangxi residents have been affected by the freak weather, the spokesman added. In southwestern Guizhou province, hailstorms hit 47 villages in Taijiang county overnight, leaving 25 residents injured, including two who were severely hurt, a regional government spokesman said. The injured have all been treated at Taijiang Hospital, the spokesman added. Power supplies have been damaged, causing power cuts in the county. Street lamps and telecommunication networks have also been disrupted. Local authorities have dispatched teams to oversee relief operations in the areas affected, the spokesman said.

Video 6 April 15, 2011. Heavy rain, then.... OH MY GOD!!!! Wind comes out of nowhere, stuff starts hitting the vehicle (we don't know what it was....Eric thought walnuts maybe)....it sounded and felt like large rocks hitting the truck. Then, BAMN!!! HAILSTONES and PANIC!!! We can't see the road anymore and we need to get off the Interstate IMMEDIATELY! Never ever saw anything like this before. Apparently, even after the tornado passes, it's not over. You can hear me saying "STOP" We gotta get off the road!" I'm actually ducking down inside the vehicle. In our panic we pull into the first place we see and pretty much drove in a circle not knowing what the heck to do. We finally spot a canopy and pull under it in time to see a young mother in the truck ahead of us grabbing her baby, while the hailstones are pounding down on her, wrapping the baby in a blanket, and running towards the building. After a few minutes we got out of our vehicle and went to see where everyone else went. The building was an old closed down truck stop and there was a guy at the side of the building holding a door open. We thought it was the way inside and went over to see. The open door was what we presume is a tornado shelter (a cement room about the size of a small closet) as there were about 25 people (including the lady with the baby) huddled inside! NEVER EVER BEEN SO SCARED IN ALL MY LIFE!!!
